This comparative case-study examines to what extent telework adoption among line managers in two subsidiaries of the same ICT-multinational in France and the Netherlands mirrors cultural values. In the Dutch case, a formal telework program was discontinued, but managers viewed informal teleworking an established practice fitting Dutch cultural values. In line with expectations, in the French case, the design of the formal telework policy and managers' telework attitudes and telework management-behaviours reflected power distance and uncertainty avoidance to be valued, which reduced telework practice. Moreover, the French managers mentioned collectivist values, work-life balance, and tradition as arguments against telework. However, their perceptions of telework as an unavoidable work practice in a globalizing economy also reflected a long-term orientation. It is concluded that despite institutional pressures leading to cross-cultural convergence in telework adoption, multinationals' global telework programs should remain sensitive to cultural variations, meanwhile taking the local histories of telework adoption processes into account

Trading well-being for economic efficiency: The 1990 shift in EU childcare policies

In 1992, the European Union (EU) adopted the Recommendation on Childcare and became involved in childcare policy. For the first time, care services and domestic care were acknowledged as the common responsibility of all the European and national political units. The article shows the interaction between childcare policy at the European level and in three welfare states with strong male breadwinner policy logics: Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom (UK). At the European and national levels, arguments prioritizing economic efficiency and equal opportunities gained ground at the expense of arguments prioritizing the well-being of children. Formerly male breadwinner states reached a consensus on the policy goal of shared responsibility for caregiving by emphasizing common economic interests and the principle of equal opportunities while still allowing for nation variability in how this policy goal will be carried out. © 2006 by The Haworth Press, Inc. Transformational change towards gender equality: An autobiographical reflection on resistance during participatory action research

Contains fulltext : 181591pub.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)This article contributes to the academic debate about gender equality change by conceptualizing resistance to gender equality change as characteristic of a system where gendered organizations tend to move back to an equilibrium when confronted with change. It explores the role of change agents and change recipients in challenging this equilibrium using autobiographical reflections on three events of resistance during participatory action research aimed at gender equality in Dutch universities. It argues that resistance can be understood as stakeholders’ articulated defence of the organizational identity when research results threaten gendered organizational norms, beliefs and values. Organizational change cognitively and emotionally challenges not only change recipients but also change agents. Reflection on and sharing of personal experiences in groups of researchers may be sources of empowerment, enabling gender equality change agents to continue the conversation with change recipients. This conversation may transform not only change recipients but also change agents.15 december 20178 p

Cutting the Loops of Depression: a System Dynamics Representation of the Feedback Mechanisms Involved in Depression Development

Contains fulltext : 162164pre.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)Depression is a complex illness that involves the instability of biological and psychological structures in an individual. These disturbances make a depressed person to be affected in the personal relationships within his social circles and to be unable to fulfill normal daily activities as expected. Once depressed individuals recognize the need for help, they might be part of ‘therapeutic essays’ based on doctors´ experience and contemporary advances. These trial and error treatments can lead to unintended consequences that could worsen depression symptoms. Therefore, personalized treatments (a currently buzz term in the medical domain) are needed to reduce the time that an individual remains in a depressed condition. This paper contributes to treatment personalization of depression by presenting the first comprehensive feedback oriented model of the cognitive and biological structures involved in depression and how different treatments may bring the main affected indicators during depression back to their desired values. Moreover, the model generated with this project may serve as a tool for improving academic discussion around depression and also as a communication device for specialists (psychologists and physicians) to better communicate patients about their condition and how treatments may affect it.International Conference of the System Dynamics Society, 17 juli 201
