The Sanctity of Burial: Pagan Views, Ancient and Modern
Archaeologists worldwide increasingly engage with calls from indigenous communities for the repatriation and reburial of ancestral remains. In this paper, we present findings from the Sacred Sites, Contested Rights/Rites
Project: Contemporary Pagan Engagements with the Past, now in its sixth year. Having examined the diversity of Pagan representations of the past and engagements with monuments, we turn our attention here to calls for respect and reburial with regard to prehistoric remains and associated
artefacts held by museums and archaeology departments in Britain. These British Pagans, Druids in particular, are claiming a say in how human remains and associated artefacts are excavated by archaeologists and
curated in museum and university collections. We identify Pagans as ‘new-indigenes’, in part due to their drawing on indigenous perspectives elsewhere in their discourse, and we problematise and theorise this discourse. There is no single Pagan voice on the issue. The Council of
British Druid Orders’ press release (leaked October 2006) calling for the immediate ‘return’ and reburial of certain pagan remains is proactive in its approach, while Honouring the Ancient Dead (HAD), a British network organisation set up to ensure respect for ancient pagan human remains and
related artefacts, has collaborated with the Museums Association in this conference bringing professionals and Pagans into dialogue to explore the ‘philosophy and practice’ surrounding ‘respect for ancient British human
remains’. This dialogue, alongside instances of reburial already in action,reflects a diversity of Pagan voices as well as the ways in which heritage managers and museum professionals are reflexively addressing this issue
From respect to reburial: negotiating pagan interest in prehistoric human remains in Britain, through the Avebury consultation
The recent Avebury Consultation on reburial has drawn considerable public and professional attention to the issue of pagan calls for respect towards the care of human remains. Our work has pointed to the importance of archaeologists and others engaging seriously and respectfully with pagans as significant stakeholders in our heritage. The Avebury Reburial Consultation suggests this dialogue is increasing in strength, but we identify problems in the process. We focus here on approaches to the prehistoric dead and worldviews enabling communication from which calls or ‘claims’ for the reburial of prehistoric pagan human remains, versus their retention for scientific study, are articulated; frameworks for assessing and adjudicating such ‘claims’; and implications for the interest groups concerned. We argue that room must be made for philosophical debate and the emotional and spiritual views of pagans, in order to improve dialogue, develop common ground, and enable participatory decision-making and situational pragmatism
Pasts and pagan practices: moving beyond Stonehenge
Theorizing the past is not restricted to archaeology and interpretations of 'past' both influence and are themselves constituted within politicized understandings of self, community and in certain instances, spirituality. 'The past in the imagination of the present' is appropriated, variously, to give meaning to the present or to justify actions and interpret experiences. Summer solstice at Stonehenge, with an estimated 21,000 celebrants in 2005, is only the most publicized appropriation (by pagans and other adherents of alternative spirituality and partying) of a 'sacred site'; and conflicts and negotiations occurring throughout Britain are represented in popular and academic presentations of this 'icon of Britishness'. This paper presents work from the Sacred Sites, Contested Rites/Rights Project (http://www.sacredsites.org.uk) project, a collaboration of archaeology and anthropology informed by pagan and alternative approaches and standpoints investigating and theorizing discourse and practice of heritage management and pagan site users. Whether in negotiations around the Stonehenge solstice access or in dealing with numerous other sites, boundaries between groups or discourses are not clearly drawn - discursive communities merge and re-emerge. But clearly 'past' and 'site' are increasingly important within today's Britain, even as television archaeology increases its following, and pagan numbers continue to grow.</p
The large Atacama submillimeter telescope
Cornell and Caltech are undertaking a two year conceptual design study for a 25-m class sub-mm telescope. The nominal location for this facility will be the high Atacama Desert of Northern Chile. The baseline design is a segmented mirror telescope optimized for operation at wavelengths longer than 200 microns to take advantage of a low precipitable water vapor at the site. We discuss science drivers and their implications for telescope design and technical requirements, and planned technical study areas
A Submillimetre Survey of the Hubble Deep Field: Unveiling Dust-Enshrouded Star Formation in the Early Universe
The advent of sensitive sub-mm array cameras now allows a proper census of
dust-enshrouded massive star-formation in very distant galaxies, previously
hidden activity to which even the deepest optical images are insensitive. We
present the deepest sub-mm survey, taken with the SCUBA camera on the James
Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) and centred on the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). The
high source density on this image implies that the survey is confusion-limited
below a flux density of 2 mJy. However within the central 80 arcsec radius
independent analyses yield 5 reproducible sources with S(850um) > 2 mJy which
simulations indicate can be ascribed to individual galaxies. These data lead to
integral source counts which are completely inconsistent with a no evolution
model, whilst the combined brightness of the 5 most secure sources in our map
is sufficient to account for 30-50% of the previously unresolved sub-mm
background, and statistically the entire background is resolved at about the
0.3 mJy level. Four of the five brightest sources appear to be associated with
galaxies which lie in the redshift range 2 < z < 4. With the caveat that this
is a small sample of sources detected in a small survey area, these submm data
imply a star-formation density over this redshift range that is at least five
times higher than that inferred from the rest-frame ultraviolet output of HDF

discuss possible optical identifications and redshift estimates for the
brightest sources. One source appears to be associated with an extreme
starburst galaxy at z~1, whilst the remaining four appear to lie in the
redshift range 2 < z < 4. This implies a star-formation density over this
redshift range that is at least five times higher than that inferred from the

Step-Indexed Normalization for a Language with General Recursion
The Trellys project has produced several designs for practical dependently
typed languages. These languages are broken into two
fragments-a_logical_fragment where every term normalizes and which is
consistent when interpreted as a logic, and a_programmatic_fragment with
general recursion and other convenient but unsound features. In this paper, we
present a small example language in this style. Our design allows the
programmer to explicitly mention and pass information between the two
fragments. We show that this feature substantially complicates the metatheory
and present a new technique, combining the traditional Girard-Tait method with
step-indexed logical relations, which we use to show normalization for the
