    Red clover is a perennial legume considered productive for a limited number of years. This experiment quantified the impacts of cultivar, companion grass, harvest schedule and nitrogen fertiliser on crop yield in the third year after reseeding, and compared these to grass receiving inorganic N fertiliser. Herbage yield was increased in swards with red clover by including ryegrass in the seed mix, by not applying inorganic N fertiliser in mid-March and by adopting the early harvest schedule. Red clover cultivar did not affect annual yield

    Leaf appearance of annual clovers responds to photoperiod atemergence

    Leaf appearance rate and time to canopy expansion of four annual clover species (arrowleaf, balansa,gland and Persian) were quantified in field and controlled environment studies. Crops sown in autumn,which experienced shortening daylengths at emergence, had a slower rate of leaf production and con-sequently took a longer time to initiate branching, than spring-sown crops. When autumn-sown ‘Bolta’balansa clover emerged on the shortest day in winter (21 June), the rate of leaf appearance was lengthenedby 4◦C d/leaf/h. When the same species emerged after the shortest day, into an increasing photoperiod,the phyllochron was shortened by 5◦C d/leaf/h. This influence of photoperiod on the phyllochron conse-quently altered the time to axillary leaf production (branching). Throughout all sowing dates, phyllochronwas the fastest for ‘Prima’ gland (33–91◦C d/leaf) and slowest for ‘Cefalu’ arrowleaf (53–116◦C d/leaf)clovers. ‘Bolta’ balansa was 44–82◦C d/leaf and ‘Mihi’ Persian 61–93◦C d/leaf. The response of phyllochronto photoperiod suggests these annual clovers should be sown in late summer or early autumn to initiateaxillary leaf production as soon as possible to ensure maximize dry matter for early spring

    Structure of Light Scalar Mesons from D_s and D^0 Non-Leptonic Decays

    Non-leptonic D meson decays may provide a reliable testbed for the multiquark interpretation of light scalar mesons. In this letter we consider D_s decay and show that a 4-quark f_0(980) meson could induce a decay pattern, which is forbidden for a q-qbar constituent structure. Experimental tests to probe such possibilities are within reach in the near future.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, minor changes. To appear in Phys. Lett.

    Positive Parity Scalar Mesons in the 1-2 GeV Mass Range

    Based on the observation that K_0(1430) is lighter than its SU_3 counterpart, a_0(1450), we examine the possibility that these particles, together with f_0(1370), f_0(1500) and f_0(1710), fill a tetraquark recurrence of the sub-GeV 0^{++} nonet mixed with a glueball state. We find the picture to be consistent with the known data about the three f_0 resonances, more than the q-qbar hypothesis. Conventional spin-orbit coupling suggests the q-qbar, P-wave, nonet to lie around 1200 MeV. We review possible experimental indications of a scalar isovector resonance at 1.29 GeV, first observed by OBELIX in p-pbar annihilation.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures. Extended version.     Analysis of the nature of the ϕγπη\phi\to\gamma\pi\eta and ϕγπ0π0\phi\to\gamma\pi^0\pi^0 decays

    We study interference patterns in the ϕ(γa0+π0ρ)γπη\phi\to(\gamma a_0+\pi^0\rho)\to\gamma\pi\eta and ϕ(γf0+π0ρ)γπ0π0\phi\to(\gamma f_0+\pi^0\rho)\to\gamma \pi^0\pi^0 reactions. Taking into account the interference, we fit the experimental data and show that the background reaction does not distort the π0η\pi^0\eta spectrum in the decay ϕγπη\phi\to\gamma\pi\eta everywhere over the energy region and does not distort the π0π0\pi^0\pi^0 spectrum in the decay ϕγπ0π0\phi\to\gamma\pi^0\pi^0 in the wide region of the π0π0\pi^0\pi^0 system invariant mass, mππ>670m_{\pi\pi}>670 MeV, or when the photon energy is less than 300 MeV. We discuss the details of the scalar meson production in the radiative decays and note that there are reasonable arguments in favor of the one-loop mechanism ϕK+Kγa0\phi\to K^+K^-\to\gamma a_0 and ϕK+Kγf0\phi\to K^+K^-\to\gamma f_0. We discuss also distinctions between the four-quark, molecular, and two-quark models and argue that the Novosibirsk data give evidence in favor of the four-quark nature of the scalar a0(980)a_0(980) and f0(980)f_0(980) mesons.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, title is changed, a few clarifying remarks are added, accepted for publication in Physical Review
