An extensive research and development program has been carried out to devise an improved method of removing waste heat of reaction from a developmental 2 kW hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell
Development and Validation of the Transition Coordinators Survey
The purpose of this study was to create a valid and reliable instrument for the field of secondary special education and transition by developing and validating the Transition Coordinators Survey (TCS). Transition coordinators are professionals who are typically responsible for working with students with disabilities, their families, and the community in order to ensure a smooth and effective transition into adult life. There has not been a tool in the field of transition that is intended to measure transition coordinator competencies, and the TCS was designed to specifically target this group of professionals. More than 30 articles were identified and reviewed for use in the study, with publication dates ranging from 1995 to 2011. Transition coordinators from 48 states and 5 U.S. territories participated in the study, yielding a usable sample of 1,346 respondents. The research described here combines descriptive, scaling, and statistical procedures to report that the TCS is a valid and reliable instrument
Experimental investigation of crater growth dynamics
This work is a continuation of an ongoing program whose objective is to perform experiments and to develop scaling relationships for large-body impacts onto planetary surfaces. The centrifuge technique is used to provide experimental data for actual target materials of interest. With both power and gas guns mounted on the rotor arm, it is possible to match various dimensionless similarity parameters, which have been shown to govern the behavior of large-scale impacts. The development of the centrifuge technique has been poineered by the present investigators and is documented by numerous publications, the most recent of which are listed below. Understanding the dependence of crater size upon gravity has been shown to be key to the complete determination of the dynamic and kinematic behavior of crater formation as well as ejecta phenomena. Three unique time regimes in the formation of an impact crater have been identified
Diagnostics Of Disks Around Hot Stars
We discuss three different observational diagnostics related to disks around hot stars: absorption line determinations of rotational velocities of Be stars; polarization diagnostics of circumstellar disks; and X-ray line diagnostics of one specific magnetized hot star, theta(1) Ori C. Some common themes that emerge from these studies include (a) the benefits of having a specific physical model as a framework for interpreting diagnostic data; (b) the importance of combining several different types of observational diagnostics of the same objects; and (c) that while there is often the need to reinterpret traditional diagnostics in light of new theoretical advances, there are many new and powerful diagnostics that are, or will soon be, available for the study of disks around hot stars
Recurrent shell infall events in a B0.5e star: HD 58978 1979-1988
Infall from the circumstellar envelope onto the bright B0.5 IVe star, HD 58978 was studied. The IUE data indicate that the star was surrounded by a low and moderately ionized circumstellar shell at least 12 times between 1979 and 1988. During 6 of these episodes, the signatures of cool circumstellar material were redshifted with respect to the photosphere by 20 to 80 km/sec. The data indicate that the transition from infall to minimal shell absorption can occur in under 10 days, and are consistent either with infall phases lasting up to 6 months, or with infall episodes shorter than 10 to 15 days. The long term behavior of the shell episodes is compared with variability in the stellar wind
Toward Mapping the Detailed Density Structure of Classical Be Circumstellar Disks
We present the preliminary results of near contemporaneous optical and infrared spectroscopic observations of select classical Be stars. We find strong evidence of oppositely oriented V/R hydrogen line profiles in the optical versus infrared spectra of zeta Tau, and briefly discuss how sustained contemporaneous optical and infrared spectroscopic observations might enable us to trace the detailed density structure of classical Be circumstellar disks
Endotoxin: A Twofold Effect on Bone Marrow Ultrastructure
Ultrastructural studies of mouse bone marrow reveal that reduction of the marrow-blood barrier precedes the two waves of leukocytosis which follow endotoxin administration. These ultrastructural changes include a decrease in adventitial cover of the marrow sinus wall, an increase in sinus circumference, and a decrease in endothelial cell overlap. The marrow-blood barrier changes which precede the first wave of leukocytosis are transient and are associated with depletion of marrow granulocytes. The changes that precede the second wave of leukocytosis 5 to 6 days later are more sustained and are associated with marked granulocyte hyperplasia. We suggest that endotoxin has two effects on marrow ultrastructure: (1) an early, direct effect on the sinus wall and (2) a later, indirect effect associated with granulocyte proliferation. The late effect may be mediated through endotoxin induced release of colony stimulating factor. Both effects diminish the normal marrow-blood barrier and appear to facilitate cell release from the marrow
Filler wire for aluminum alloys and method of welding
A weld filler wire chemistry has been developed for fusion welding 2195 aluminum-lithium. The weld filler wire chemistry is an aluminum-copper based alloy containing high additions of titanium and zirconium. The additions of titanium and zirconium reduce the crack susceptibility of aluminum alloy welds while producing good weld mechanical properties. The addition of silver further improves the weld properties of the weld filler wire. The reduced weld crack susceptibility enhances the repair weldability, including when planishing is required
