    Does Our English Teacher Education Need Re-Designing?

    Change has been regarded as inherent in any living organization for quite a long time, for its own development and to keep up its external relevance as part of the development. Individual or random responses to external sources for change, however, tend to cause internal inconsistency and inefficiency. On this occasion a number of current issues, potential to be sources for change, such as diversified outcomes, the school-based management, and the competence-based curriculum will be looked over in terms of its relevance to our English-teacher education. There are obviously other sources of change, and they will keep coming in, but when we feel they become too many, and they come too often, it is time to read between the lines, to grab theft underlying spirit. Perhaps the time is here for us to get ourEnglish-teacher education re-orientated, and subsequently re-designed

    WHAT IS TRANSLATION STUDIES FOR?

    What is translation studies for? Such a question, though currently relevant, may still become initially provoking, especially to established translation students. Why ask such a question? Indeed, it is a matter of choice to ask or not to ask it, nevertheless, in this paper I choose to offer an answer to this question. Essentially asking this question is only a logical consequence of the postmodern culture, to emphasize that a disciplined inquiry is to serve the student, and not the other way round. I will do it system wise, i.e. both systematically and systemically. The system treatment is to allow not a peace-meal but more holistic coverage of the subject matter, from its metaphysics to its operation. I am hoping the discussion will help translation students think big and act small in developing a more authentic project of translation studies

    TRILINGUAL TEXTUALIZATION TO DELIVER INDONESIAN LOCAL CULTURES TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

    This article addresses issues surrounding translation of local texts from regional languages and cultures throughout the Indonesian archipelago into Indonesian and English. The textualization of the local culture to be documented includes: (1) folklore, (2) life-cycle rituals, (3) socio-religious rituals, (4) traditional medicine and other local wisdom, and (5) local culinary. It will discuss the formulation of the basic philosophy, themes, and values in the local texts to translate as well as principles of translation to apply. The study shows that textualization of the local texts helps support the politics of the national language, namely the use of Indonesian as the national language, the preservation of local languages as the fundamental support of the national culture, and the exposure of various local wisdoms to the global community. The availability of trilingual cultural texts will likely contribute to the promotion of human dignity.DOI:doi.org/10.24071/llt.2018.21010
