Ortsaufgeloeste optische Fernmessung gasfoermiger Luftschadstoffe
Differential-absorption and scattering lidar, or DIAL, is an optical technique for the remote, depth-resolved determination of gaseous pollutants. Dust and other aerosols can be characterized by their absorption coefficient and can thus also be measured. The technique is described and a practical instrument, ARGOS, is presented. Three examples illustrate its use. A discussion of possible applications and of the potential and limitations of the new technique conclude the article.
