Travelling waves in a mixture of gases with bimolecular reversible reactions

Starting from the kinetic approach for a mixture of reacting gases whose particles interact through elastic scattering and a bimolecular reversible chemical reaction, the equations that govern the dynamics of the system are obtained by means of the relevant Boltzmann-like equation. Conservation laws are considered. Fluid dynamic approximations are used at the Euler level to obtain a close set of PDEs for six unknown macroscopic fields. The dispersion relation of the mixture of reacting gases is explicitly derived in the homogeneous equilibrium state. A set of ODE that governs the propagation of a plane travelling wave is obtained using the Galilei invariance. After numerical integration some solutions, including the well-known Maxwellian and the hard spheres cases, are found for various meaningful interaction laws. The main macroscopic observables for the gas mixture such as the drift velocity, temperature, total density, pressure and its chemical composition are shown.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, accepted on Physica

On Proper Polynomial Maps of C2.\mathbb{C}^2.

Two proper polynomial maps f1,f2 ⁣:C2C2f_1, f_2 \colon \mathbb{C}^2 \longrightarrow \mathbb{C}^2 are said to be \emph{equivalent} if there exist Φ1,Φ2Aut(C2)\Phi_1, \Phi_2 \in \textrm{Aut}(\mathbb{C}^2) such that f2=Φ2f1Φ1f_2=\Phi_2 \circ f_1 \circ \Phi_1. We investigate proper polynomial maps of arbitrary topological degree d2d \geq 2 up to equivalence. Under the further assumption that the maps are Galois coverings we also provide the complete description of equivalence classes. This widely extends previous results obtained by Lamy in the case d=2d=2.Comment: 15 pages. Final version, to appear in Journal of Geometric Analysi

Order parameter dependence of the viscosity coefficients of a biaxial nematic liquid crystal

    No full text
We derive expressions for the order parameter dependence of the viscosity coefficients of a biaxial nematic liquid crystal by comparing its dissipation function expressed in terms of directors with that expressed in terms of order tensors. The results enable us to identify the dominant flow viscosity coefficients and to compare their temperature variation according to their dependence on the dominant scalar order parameters. By considering different orientations of an external field, we identify three characteristic switching times corresponding to three rotational viscosities, and we estimate the ratio of the switching times of the primary and the secondary directors

Discovery of novel benzofuran-based compounds with neuroprotective and immunomodulatory properties for Alzheimer's disease treatment

    No full text
To address the multifactorial nature of Alzheimer's Disease (AD), a multi-target-directed ligand approach was herein developed. As a follow-up of our previous studies, a small library of newly designed 2-arylbenzofuran derivatives was evaluated towards cholinesterases and cannabinoid receptors. The two most promising compounds, 8 and 10, were then assessed for their neuroprotective activity and for their ability to modulate the microglial phenotype. Compound 8 emerged as able to fight AD from several directions: it restored the cholinergic system by inhibiting butyrylcholinesterase, showed neuroprotective activity against A\u3b21-42 oligomers, was a potent and selective CB2 ligand and had immunomodulatory effects, switching microglia from the pro-inflammatory M1 to the neuroprotective M2 phenotype. Derivative 10 was a potent CB2 inverse agonist with promising immunomodulatory properties and could be considered as a tool for investigating the role of CB2 receptors and for developing potential immunomodulating drugs addressing the endocannabinoid system

Landau theory for biaxial nematic liquid crystals with two order parameter tensors

    No full text
We present a phenomenological theory for the homogeneous phases of nematic liquid crystals constituted by biaxial molecules. We propose a general polynomial potential in two macroscopic order parameter tensors that reproduces the mean-field phase diagram confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations [De Matteis et al. in Phys Rev E 72:041706 (2005)] and recently recognized to be universal [Bisi et al. in Phys Rev E 73:051709 (2006)] for dispersion force molecular pair-potentials enjoying the D 2h symmetry. The requirement that the phenomenological theory comply uniquely with this phase diagram reduces considerably the admissible phenomenological coefficients, both in their number and in the ranges where they can vary
