General relativistic null-cone evolutions with a high-order scheme
We present a high-order scheme for solving the full non-linear Einstein
equations on characteristic null hypersurfaces using the framework established
by Bondi and Sachs. This formalism allows asymptotically flat spaces to be
represented on a finite, compactified grid, and is thus ideal for far-field
studies of gravitational radiation. We have designed an algorithm based on
4th-order radial integration and finite differencing, and a spectral
representation of angular components. The scheme can offer significantly more
accuracy with relatively low computational cost compared to previous methods as
a result of the higher-order discretization. Based on a newly implemented code,
we show that the new numerical scheme remains stable and is convergent at the
expected order of accuracy.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figure
Are autistic traits in the general population stable across development?
There is accumulating evidence that autistic traits (AT) are on a continuum in the general population, with clinical autism representing the extreme end of a quantitative distribution. While the nature and severity of symptoms in clinical autism are known to persist over time, no study has examined the long-term stability of AT among typically developing toddlers. The current investigation measured AT in 360 males and 400 males from the general population close to two decades apart, using the Pervasive Developmental Disorder subscale of the Child Behavior Checklist in early childhood (M = 2.14 years; SD = 0.15), and the Autism-Spectrum Quotient in early adulthood (M = 19.50 years; SD = 0.70). Items from each scale were further divided into social (difficulties with social interaction and communication) and non-social (restricted and repetitive behaviours and interests) AT. The association between child and adult measurements of AT as well the influence of potentially confounding sociodemographic, antenatal and obstetric variables were assessed using Pearson's correlations and linear regression. For males, Total AT in early childhood were positively correlated with total AT (r = .16, p = .002) and social AT (r = .16, p = .002) in adulthood. There was also a positive correlation for males between social AT measured in early childhood and Total (r = .17, p = .001) and social AT (r = .16, p = .002) measured in adulthood. Correlations for non-social AT did not achieve significance in males. Furthermore, there was no significant longitudinal association in AT observed for males or females. Despite the constraints of using different measures and different raters at the two ages, this study found modest developmental stability of social AT from early childhood to adulthood in boys
k is the Magic Number -- Inferring the Number of Clusters Through Nonparametric Concentration Inequalities
Most convex and nonconvex clustering algorithms come with one crucial
parameter: the in -means. To this day, there is not one generally
accepted way to accurately determine this parameter. Popular methods are simple
yet theoretically unfounded, such as searching for an elbow in the curve of a
given cost measure. In contrast, statistically founded methods often make
strict assumptions over the data distribution or come with their own
optimization scheme for the clustering objective. This limits either the set of
applicable datasets or clustering algorithms. In this paper, we strive to
determine the number of clusters by answering a simple question: given two
clusters, is it likely that they jointly stem from a single distribution? To
this end, we propose a bound on the probability that two clusters originate
from the distribution of the unified cluster, specified only by the sample mean
and variance. Our method is applicable as a simple wrapper to the result of any
clustering method minimizing the objective of -means, which includes
Gaussian mixtures and Spectral Clustering. We focus in our experimental
evaluation on an application for nonconvex clustering and demonstrate the
suitability of our theoretical results. Our \textsc{SpecialK} clustering
algorithm automatically determines the appropriate value for , without
requiring any data transformation or projection, and without assumptions on the
data distribution. Additionally, it is capable to decide that the data consists
of only a single cluster, which many existing algorithms cannot
Generating and measuring the anisotropic elastic behaviour of Co thin films with oriented surface nano-strings on micro-cantilevers
In this research, the elastic behaviour of two Co thin films simultaneously deposited in an off-normal angle method was studied. Towards this end, two Si micro-cantilevers were simultaneously coated using pulsed laser deposition at an oblique angle, creating a Co nano-string surface morphology with a predetermined orientation. The selected position of each micro-cantilever during the coating process created longitudinal or transverse nano-strings. The anisotropic elastic behaviour of these Co films was determined by measuring the changes that took place in the resonant frequency of each micro-cantilever after this process of creating differently oriented plasma coatings had been completed. This differential procedure allowed us to determine the difference between the Young's modulus of the different films based on the different direction of the nano-strings. This difference was determined to be, at least, the 20% of the Young's modulus of the bulk Co

Evaluation of High Resolution Thermal Imaging to Determine the Effect of Vertebral Fractures on Associated Skin Surface Temperature in Children with Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Vertebral fractures are common in children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Current imaging methods for fracture detection (X-ray and DXA) use ionising radiation. This pilot study explored whether the alteration in blood flow in vertebral fractures results in skin temperature changes that may be detected using high resolution thermal imaging (HRTI) and thus assist diagnosis and monitoring of fractures in OI patients.
Eleven participants aged 5-18 years with OI and known vertebral fractures were enrolled. Small metal discs were placed on the skin surface alongside the vertebrae before participants had DXA and X-ray scans and thermal imaging of their backs. Visibility of the discs on the DXA and X-ray scans and thermal images allowed the temperatures of the skin surface above vertebrae without (healthy) and with fractures to be compared to their respective adjacent skin surface regions (Region of Reference, ROR) by calculating the temperature percentage change (TPC). The TPC between the skin temperature over the fractured thoracic vertebrae (n=11) and the ROR was significant (1.44%, p=0.002, 95% confidence). TPC between the skin temperature over healthy thoracic vertebrae and ROR was not (0.97%, p=0.15, 95% confidence). HRTI may provide a novel tool for assisting in detection of vertebral fractures in OI.

Leukocyte capture and modulation of cell-mediated immunity during human sepsis: An ex vivo study
Introduction: Promising preclinical results have been obtained with blood purification therapies as adjuvant treatment for sepsis. However, the mechanisms by which these therapies exert beneficial effects remain unclear. Some investigators have suggested that removal of activated leukocytes from the circulation might help ameliorate remote organ injury. We designed an extracorporeal hemoadsorption device capable of capturing both cytokines and leukocytes in order to test the hypothesis that leukocyte capture would alter circulating cytokine profiles and influence immunological cell-cell interactions in whole blood taken from patients with sepsis.Methods: We performed a series of ex vivo studies in 21 patients with septic shock and 12 healthy volunteers. Blood circulated for four hours in closed loops with four specially designed miniaturized extracorporeal blood purification devices including two different hemoadsorption devices and a hemofilter in order to characterize leukocyte capture and to assess the effects of leukocyte removal on inflammation and immune function. Results: Hemoadsorption was selective for removal of activated neutrophils and monocytes. Capture of these cells led to local release of certain cytokines, especially IL-8, and resulted in complex cell-cell interactions involved in cellmediated immunity. Inhibition of cell adherence reversed the cytokine release and the effects on lymphocyte function. Conclusions: Monocyte and neutrophil capture using a sorbent polymer results in upregulation of IL-8 and modulation of cell-mediated immunity. Further studies are needed to understand better these cellular interactions in order to help design better blood purification therapies. © 2013 Rimmelé et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
The ethics of digital well-being: a multidisciplinary perspective
This chapter serves as an introduction to the edited collection of the same name, which includes chapters that explore digital well-being from a range of disciplinary perspectives, including philosophy, psychology, economics, health care, and education. The purpose of this introductory chapter is to provide a short primer on the different disciplinary approaches to the study of well-being. To supplement this primer, we also invited key experts from several disciplines—philosophy, psychology, public policy, and health care—to share their thoughts on what they believe are the most important open questions and ethical issues for the multi-disciplinary study of digital well-being. We also introduce and discuss several themes that we believe will be fundamental to the ongoing study of digital well-being: digital gratitude, automated interventions, and sustainable co-well-being

Oxidative stress causes ERK phosphorylation and cell death in cultured retinal pigment epithelium: Prevention of cell death by AG126 and 15-deoxy-delta 12, 14-PGJ(2)
BACKGROUND: The retina, which is exposed to both sunlight and very high levels of oxygen, is exceptionally rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, which makes it a favorable environment for the generation of reactive oxygen species. The cytotoxic effects of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) induced oxidative stress on retinal pigment epithelium were characterized in this study. METHODS: The MTT cell viability assay, Texas-Red phalloidin staining, immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis were used to assess the effects of oxidative stress on primary human retinal pigment epithelial cell cultures and the ARPE-19 cell line. RESULTS: The treatment of retinal pigment epithelial cells with H(2)O(2 )caused a dose-dependent decrease of cellular viability, which was preceded by a significant cytoskeletal rearrangement, activation of the Extracellular signal-Regulated Kinase, lipid peroxidation and nuclear condensation. This cell death was prevented partially by the prostaglandin derivative, 15d-PGJ(2 )and by the protein kinase inhibitor, AG126. CONCLUSION: 15d-PGJ(2 )and AG126 may be useful pharmacological tools in the future capable of preventing oxidative stress induced RPE cell death in human ocular diseases
