    The developmental impacts of natural selection on human pelvic morphology

    Evolutionary responses to selection for bipedalism and childbirth have shaped the human pelvis, a structure that differs substantially from that in apes. Morphology related to these factors is present by birth, yet the developmental-genetic mechanisms governing pelvic shape remain largely unknown. Here, we pinpoint and characterize a key gestational window when human-specific pelvic morphology becomes recognizable, as the ilium and the entire pelvis acquire traits essential for human walking and birth. We next use functional genomics to molecularly characterize chondrocytes from different pelvic subelements during this window to reveal their developmental-genetic architectures. We then find notable evidence of ancient selection and genetic constraint on regulatory sequences involved in ilium expansion and growth, findings complemented by our phenotypic analyses showing that variation in iliac traits is reduced in humans compared to African apes. Our datasets provide important resources for musculoskeletal biology and begin to elucidate developmental mechanisms that shape human-specific morphology

    Bishops who live like princes: Bishop Tebartz-van Elst and the challenge of defining corruption

    This article contributes to the debate on defining corruption. Rather than attempting to provide a definitive definition, it uses the case of Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, a German bishop from the diocese of Limburg who stepped down in 2014, to illustrate that the disciplines of law, political science, economics, and anthropology all make important contributions to understanding what corruption is and how it should be conceptualized. Seen through these different lenses, the article argues, the case of “Bishop Bling” can be understood in strikingly different ways. This has ramifications not just for the case itself but also for how analysts understand corruption more broadly. Adopting an overtly interdisciplinary approach does not represent a way to “solve” the definitional dilemma, but it can help analysts understand more about corruption’s multiplicity

    Surgical Evacuation for Chronic Subdural Hematoma: Predictors of Reoperation and Functional Outcomes

    Background Although chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) incidence has increased, there is limited evidence to guide patient management after surgical evacuation. Objective To identify predictors of reoperation and functional outcome after CSDH surgical evacuation. Methods We identified all patients with CSDH between 2010 and 2018. Clinical and radiographic variables were collected from the medical records. Outcomes included reoperation within 90 days and poor (3–6) modified Rankin Scale score at 3 months. Results We identified 461 surgically treated CSDH cases (396 patients). The mean age was 70.1 years, 29.7 % were females, 298 (64.6 %) underwent burr hole evacuation, 152 (33.0 %) craniotomy, and 11 (2.4 %) craniectomy. Reoperation rate within 90 days was 12.6 %, whereas 24.2 % of cases had a poor functional status at 3 months. Only female sex was associated with reoperation within 90 days (OR = 2.09, 95 % CI: 1.17–3.75, P = 0.013). AMS on admission (OR = 5.19, 95 % CI: 2.15–12.52, P \u3c 0.001) and female sex (OR = 3.90, 95 % CI: 1.57–9.70, P = 0.003) were independent predictors of poor functional outcome at 3 months. Conclusion Careful management of patients with the above predictive factors may reduce CSDH reoperation and improve long-term functional outcomes. However, larger randomized studies are necessary to assess long-term prognosis after surgical evacuation

    Screening Precursor–Solvent Combinations for Li4Ti5O12 Energy Storage Material Using Flame Spray Pyrolysis

    The development and industrial application of advanced lithium based energy-storage materials are directly related to the innovative production techniques and the usage of inexpensive precursor materials. Flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) is a promising technique that overcomes the challenges in the production processes such as scalability, process control, material versatility, and cost. In the present study, phase pure anode material Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) was designed using FSP via extensive systematic screening of lithium and titanium precursors dissolved in five different organic solvents. The effect of precursor and solvent parameters such as chemical reactivity, boiling point, and combustion enthalpy on the particle formation either via gas-to-particle (evaporation/nucleation/growth) or via droplet-to-particle (precipitation/incomplete evaporation) is discussed. The presence of carboxylic acid in the precursor solution resulted in pure (>95 mass %) and homogeneous LTO nanoparticles of size 4–9 nm, attributed to two reasons: (1) stabilization of water sensitive metal alkoxides precursor and (2) formation of volatile carboxylates from lithium nitrate evidenced by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and single droplet combustion experiments. In contrast, the absence of carboxylic acids resulted in larger inhomogeneous crystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles with significant reduction of LTO content as low as ∌34 mass %. In-depth particle characterization was performed using X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement, thermogravimetric analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry and mass spectrometry, gas adsorption, and vibrational spectroscopy. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy of the LTO product revealed excellent quality of the particles obtained at high temperature. In addition, high rate capability and efficient charge reversibility of LTO nanoparticles demonstrate the vast potential of inexpensive gas-phase synthesis for energy-storage materials

    Versucht man das Zeitalter zu charakterisieren, dessen Zeugen wir sind, das wir prĂ€gen und von dem wir geprĂ€gt werden, wird hĂ€ufig darauf verwiesen, dass wir in einem Zeitalter großer VerĂ€nderungen leben. Diese betreffen divergente Bereiche wie das Politische, dessen Architektur sich spĂ€testens mit dem Ende der Union der Sozialistischen Sowjetrepubliken und mit 9/11 drastisch verĂ€nderte, oder das Ökonomische, das durch die globale Verbreitung des Kapitalismus und dessen scheinbare Alternativlosigkeit gleichförmiger, vernetzter und dominanter zu werden scheint (Fukuyama 1992). Aber auch gesellschaftliche SphĂ€ren ĂŒbergreifende Praktiken wie neue Kommunikationsformen, deren Wandel durch ihre Digitalisierung und informatische Erschließung großer Teile der Welt vorangetrieben wird, tragen stark zu VerĂ€nderungen des gesellschaftlichen Zusammenlebens bei. Auf zwei Bereiche, die voranschreitende Technisierung einerseits und den demographischen Wandel andererseits, wollen wir uns in diesem Beitrag maßgeblich konzentrieren und der Frage nachgehen, wie diese Bereiche bezĂŒglich eines guten Lebens im Alter aus einer ethischen und anthropologischen Perspektive erfasst werden können
