The XMM Newton and INTEGRAL observations of the supergiant fast X-ray transient IGR J16328-4726
The accretion mechanism producing the short flares observed from the
Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXT) is still highly debated and forms a
major part in our attempts to place these X-ray binaries in the wider context
of the High Mass X-ray Binaries.
We report on a 216 ks INTEGRAL observation of the SFXT IGR J16328-4726
(August 24-27, 2014) simultaneous with two fixed-time observations with XMM
Newton (33ks and 20ks) performed around the putative periastron passage, in
order to investigate the accretion regime and the wind properties during this
orbital phase. During these observations, the source has shown luminosity
variations, from 4x10^{34} erg/s to 10^{36} erg/s, linked to spectral
properties changes. The soft X-ray continuum is well modeled by a power law
with a photon index varying from 1.2 up to 1.7 and with high values of the
column density in the range 2-4x10^{23}/cm^2. We report on the presence of iron
lines at 6.8-7.1 keV suggesting that the X-ray flux is produced by accretion of
matter from the companion wind characterized by density and temperature
inhomogeneities
Gaussian approximation for finitely extensible bead-spring chains with hydrodynamic interaction
The Gaussian Approximation, proposed originally by Ottinger [J. Chem. Phys.,
90 (1) : 463-473, 1989] to account for the influence of fluctuations in
hydrodynamic interactions in Rouse chains, is adapted here to derive a new
mean-field approximation for the FENE spring force. This "FENE-PG" force law
approximately accounts for spring-force fluctuations, which are neglected in
the widely used FENE-P approximation. The Gaussian Approximation for
hydrodynamic interactions is combined with the FENE-P and FENE-PG spring force
approximations to obtain approximate models for finitely-extensible bead-spring
chains with hydrodynamic interactions. The closed set of ODE's governing the
evolution of the second-moments of the configurational probability distribution
in the approximate models are used to generate predictions of rheological
properties in steady and unsteady shear and uniaxial extensional flows, which
are found to be in good agreement with the exact results obtained with Brownian
dynamics simulations. In particular, predictions of coil-stretch hysteresis are
in quantitative agreement with simulations' results. Additional simplifying
diagonalization-of-normal-modes assumptions are found to lead to considerable
savings in computation time, without significant loss in accuracy.Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables, 75 numbered equations, 1 appendix

Peeping at chaos: Nondestructive monitoring of chaotic systems by measuring long-time escape rates
One or more small holes provide non-destructive windows to observe
corresponding closed systems, for example by measuring long time escape rates
of particles as a function of hole sizes and positions. To leading order the
escape rate of chaotic systems is proportional to the hole size and independent
of position. Here we give exact formulas for the subsequent terms, as sums of
correlation functions; these depend on hole size and position, hence yield
information on the closed system dynamics. Conversely, the theory can be
readily applied to experimental design, for example to control escape rates.Comment: Originally 4 pages and 2 eps figures incorporated into the text; v2

History Memorized and Recalled upon Glass Transition
The memory effect upon glassification is studied in the glass to rubber
transition of vulcanized rubber with the strain as a controlling parameter. A
phenomenological model is proposed taking the history of the temperature and
the strain into account, by which the experimental results are interpreted. The
data and the model demonstrate that the glassy state memorizes the time-course
of strain upon glassification, not as a single parameter but as the history
itself. The data also show that the effect of irreversible deformation in the
glassy state is beyond the scope of the present model.

title appeared in PRL is the one changed by a Senior Assistant Editor after
acceptance of the paper. The recovery of the title was rejected in the

Rouse Chains with Excluded Volume Interactions: Linear Viscoelasticity
Linear viscoelastic properties for a dilute polymer solution are predicted by
modeling the solution as a suspension of non-interacting bead-spring chains.
The present model, unlike the Rouse model, can describe the solution's
rheological behavior even when the solvent quality is good, since excluded
volume effects are explicitly taken into account through a narrow Gaussian
repulsive potential between pairs of beads in a bead-spring chain. The use of
the narrow Gaussian potential, which tends to the more commonly used
delta-function repulsive potential in the limit of a width parameter "d" going
to zero, enables the performance of Brownian dynamics simulations. The
simulations results, which describe the exact behavior of the model, indicate
that for chains of arbitrary but finite length, a delta-function potential
leads to equilibrium and zero shear rate properties which are identical to the
predictions of the Rouse model. On the other hand, a non-zero value of "d"
gives rise to a prediction of swelling at equilibrium, and an increase in zero
shear rate properties relative to their Rouse model values. The use of a
delta-function potential appears to be justified in the limit of infinite chain
length. The exact simulation results are compared with those obtained with an
approximate solution which is based on the assumption that the non-equilibrium
configurational distribution function is Gaussian. The Gaussian approximation
is shown to be exact to first order in the strength of excluded volume
interaction, and is found to be accurate above a threshold value of "d", for
given values of chain length and strength of excluded volume interaction.Comment: Revised version. Long chain limit analysis has been deleted. An
improved and corrected examination of the long chain limit will appear as a
separate posting. 32 pages, 9 postscript figures, LaTe
Statistical kinetic treatment of relativistic binary collisions
In particle-based algorithms, the effect of binary collisions is commonly
described in a statistical way, using Monte Carlo techniques. It is shown that,
in the relativistic regime, stringent constraints should be considered on the
sampling of particle pairs for collision, which are critical to ensure
physically meaningful results, and that nonrelativistic sampling criteria
(e.g., uniform random pairing) yield qualitatively wrong results, including
equilibrium distributions that differ from the theoretical J\"uttner
distribution. A general procedure for relativistically consistent algorithms is
provided, and verified with three-dimensional Monte Carlo simulations, thus
opening the way to the numerical exploration of the statistical properties of
collisional relativistic systems.Comment: Accepted for publication as a Rapid Communication in Phys. Rev.
The IBIS soft gamma-ray sky after 1000 INTEGRAL orbits
We report here an all-sky soft gamma-ray source catalog based on IBIS
observations performed during the first 1000 orbits of INTEGRAL. The database
for the construction of the source list consists of all good quality data
available from launch in 2002 up to the end of 2010. This corresponds to
110 Ms of scientific public observations with a concentrated coverage on
the Galactic Plane and extragalactic deep exposures. This new catalog includes
939 sources above a 4.5 sigma significance threshold detected in the 17-100 keV
energy band, of which 120 represent previously undiscovered soft gamma-ray
emitters. The source positions are determined, mean fluxes are provided in two
main energy bands, and are reported together with the overall source exposure.
Indicative levels of variability are provided, and outburst times and durations
are given for transient sources. Comparison is made with previous IBIS
catalogs, and those from other similar missions.Comment: 65 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Prediction of strong shock structure using the bimodal distribution function
A modified Mott-Smith method for predicting the one-dimensional shock wave
solution at very high Mach numbers is constructed by developing a system of
fluid dynamic equations. The predicted shock solutions in a gas of Maxwell
molecules, a hard sphere gas and in argon using the newly proposed formalism
are compared with the experimental data, direct-simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC)
solution and other solutions computed from some existing theories for Mach
numbers M<50. In the limit of an infinitely large Mach number, the predicted
shock profiles are also compared with the DSMC solution. The density,
temperature and heat flux profiles calculated at different Mach numbers have
been shown to have good agreement with the experimental and DSMC solutionsComment: 22 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in Physical Review
