Estimating Price Paths for Residential Real Estate
Several approaches have been used to estimate and adjust for price movements in residential real estate; however, weaknesses remain in current systems. This paper incorporates a different way of measuring temporal price patterns. The method involves a time series model, an approach not previously employed when estimating real estate price movements. Using illustrative data, it is indicated that the proposed technique is likely more accurate than current procedures. The method also represents a significant adaptation of standard time series models. For the task at hand, the new model is arguably preferable to these more standard versions.
Student Outcomes at University in Autsralia: A Quantile Regression Approach
Studentsâ success during their first year at university is largely influenced by their university entrance score. Personal characteristics and secondary school characteristics also impact on success. This paper uses quantile regression to investigate how the effects of these factors vary along the grade distribution. It finds that the factors which influence grades have a more pronounced impact on the success of low-achieving students than on that of high-achieving students. These results have implications for student selection and also for the way scholarships may be used to attract talented high school students.
The Determinants of Students' Tertiary Academic Success
Many factors influence studentsâ academic performance at university, including their prior academic ability, level of wealth and demographic traits. The characteristics of the secondary school attended by students also play an important role in influencing their university outcomes. This paper considers the determinants of grades for students at a large Australian university. Using both first- and second-generation approaches to modelling the determinants of academic success, it finds that university grades are largely influenced by studentsâ university entrance scores. Schools also appear to affect academic performance at university.
THE INFLUENCES OF INSTITUTION ATTENDED AND FIELD OF STUDY ON GRADUATESâ STARTING SALARIES
This paper examines the determinants of Australian university graduatesâ starting salaries, with an emphasis on the institution attended and field of study. It is shown that there is little difference between the starting salaries of students who attended Go8 universities and those who attended other universities. There are modest differences in starting salaries according to field of study. However, these differences are considerably less than those associated with the type of employment obtained. These results suggest it is what you do in the labour market, rather than where or what you have studied, that is the main determinant of labour market outcomes.
Impact of Ranch and Market Factors on an Index of Agricultural Holding Period Returns
This study develops nominal and real holding period return indices for operating ranches. The indices contain two components, monthly ranch operating profit and capital appreciation. A regression model that determines the effect of various attributes on total market value is used to estimate capital appreciation, and a second model determines operating profit. The two different ranch data series are compared with United States Long Term Government Bonds, the S&P 500 Index and Small Capitalization Stocks. Both ranch indices show very low correlation with the S&P 500 Index and very low or negative betas. Further, both ranch series have excess actual nominal and real returns when compared to expected returns determined from the Capital Asset Pricing Model.
Detailed Structure and Dynamics in Particle-in-Cell Simulations of the Lunar Wake
The solar wind plasma from the Sun interacts with the Moon, generating a wake
structure behind it, since the Moon is to a good approximation an insulator,
has no intrinsic magnetic field and a very thin atmosphere. The lunar wake in
simplified geometry has been simulated via a 1-1/2-D electromagnetic
particle-in-cell code, with high resolution in order to resolve the full phase
space dynamics of both electrons and ions. The simulation begins immediately
downstream of the moon, before the solar wind has infilled the wake region,
then evolves in the solar wind rest frame. An ambipolar electric field and a
potential well are generated by the electrons, which subsequently create a
counter-streaming beam distribution, causing a two-stream instability which
confines the electrons. This also creates a number of electron phase space
holes. Ion beams are accelerated into the wake by the ambipolar electric field,
generating a two stream distribution with phase space mixing that is strongly
influenced by the potentials created by the electron two-stream instability.
