    From 'River Cottage' to 'Chicken Run': Hugh Fearnley-Whttingstall and the class politics of ethical consumption

    Lifestyle television provides a key site through which to explore the dilemmas of ethical consumption, as the genre shifts to consider the ethics of different consumption practices and taste cultures. UK television cook Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's TV programmes offer fertile ground not only for thinking about television personalities as lifestyle experts and moral entrepreneurs, but also for thinking about how the meanings and uses of their television image are inflected by genre. In this article we explore how the shift from the lifestyled downshifting narrative of the River Cottage series to the 'campaigning culinary documentary' Hugh's Chicken Run exposes issues of celebrity, class and ethics. While both series are concerned with ethical consumption, they work in different ways to reveal a distinction between 'ethical' and 'unethical' consumption practices and positions - positions that are inevitably classed

    The Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD; http://www.yeastgenome.org/) provides high-quality curated genomic, genetic, and molecular information on the genes and their products of the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. To accommodate the increasingly complex, diverse needs of researchers for searching and comparing data, SGD has implemented InterMine (http://www.InterMine.org), an open source data warehouse system with a sophisticated querying interface, to create YeastMine (http://yeastmine.yeastgenome.org). YeastMine is a multifaceted search and retrieval environment that provides access to diverse data types. Searches can be initiated with a list of genes, a list of Gene Ontology terms, or lists of many other data types. The results from queries can be combined for further analysis and saved or downloaded in customizable file formats. Queries themselves can be customized by modifying predefined templates or by creating a new template to access a combination of specific data types. YeastMine offers multiple scenarios in which it can be used such as a powerful search interface, a discovery tool, a curation aid and also a complex database presentation format.     Neuroinflammation and amyloid deposition in the progression of mixed Alzheimer and vascular dementia

    BACKGROUND: Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD) and vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) pathologies coexist in patients with cognitive impairment. Abnormal amyloid beta (Aβ) deposition is the hallmark pathologic biomarker for AD. Neuroinflammation may be a pathophysiological mechanism in both AD and VCID. In this study, we aimed to understand the role of neuroinflammation and Aβ deposition in white matter hyperintensities (WMH) progression and cognitive decline over a decade in patients with mixed AD and VCID pathologies. METHODS: Twenty-four elderly participants (median [interquartile range] age 78 [64.8, 83] years old, 14 female) were recruited from the Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center. RESULTS: Fifteen participants (62.5%) had mixed AD (positive PiB) and VCID (at least one vascular risk factor) pathologies. Elevated CONCLUSIONS: Neuroinflammation and Aβ deposition may represent two distinct pathophysiological pathways, and both independently contributed to the progression of cognitive impairment in mixed AD and VCID pathologies. Neuroinflammation, but not Aβ deposition, contributed to WMH volume and progression

    A Unified Model of Exclusive ρ0\rho^0, ϕ\phi and \jpsi Electroproduction

    A two-component model is developed for diffractive electroproduction of ρ0\rho^0, ϕ\phi and \jpsi, based on non-perturbative and perturbative two-gluon exchange. This provides a common kinematical structure for non-perturbative and perturbative effects, and allows the role of the vector-meson vertex functions to be explored independently of the production dynamics. A good global description of the vector-meson data is obtained.Comment: 30 pages, 35 figure

    Two-gluon form factor of the nucleon and J/ψJ/\psi photoproduction

    We argue that the t-dependence of the two-gluon form factor of the nucleon should be given by Γ(t)=(1t/m2g2)2\Gamma(t)=(1-t/m_{2g}^2)^{-2} with m2g21GeV2m_{2g}^2\approx 1 GeV^2. We demonstrate that this form provides a good description of the t-dependence of the cross section of the elastic photoproduction of J/ψJ/\psi-mesons between the threshold region of Eγ=11GeVE_{\gamma}=11 GeV (Cornell), Eγ=19GeVE_{\gamma}=19 GeV (SLAC) and Eγ=100GeVE_{\gamma}=100 GeV (FNAL) including the strong energy dependence of the t-slope. It is also well matched with the recent HERA data. The same assumption explains also the t-dependence of ϕ\phi-meson electroproduction near threshold at W=2.3GeV,Q2=1.0GeV2W=2.3 GeV, Q^2=1.0 GeV^2.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Charmonium absorption by nucleons

    J/ΨJ/\Psi dissociation in collisions with nucleons is studied within a boson exchange model and the energy dependence of the dissociation cross section is calculated from the threshold for ΛcDˉ\Lambda_c{\bar D} production to high energies. We illustrate the agreement of our results with calculations based on short distance QCD and Regge theory. The compatibility between our calculations and the data on J/ΨJ/\Psi photoproduction on a nucleon is discussed. We evaluate the elastic J/Ψ+NJ/\Psi{+}N cross section using a forward dispersion relation and demonstrate the overall agreement with the predictions from QCD sum rules. Our results are compatible with the phenomenological dissociation cross section evaluated from the experimental data on J/ΨJ/\Psi production from γ+A\gamma{+}A, p+Ap{+}A and A+AA{+}A collisions.Comment: 14 pages, revtex, including 13 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.
