HyperK\"ahler quotients and N=4 gauge theories in D=2

We consider certain N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories in D=2 coupled to quaternionic matter multiplets in a minimal way. These theories admit as effective theories sigma-models on non-trivial HyperK\"ahler manifolds obtained as HyperK\"ahler quotients. The example of ALE manifolds is discussed. Attribute-level Neighbor Hierarchy Construction Using Evolved Pattern-based Knowledge Induction

    Get PDF
Neighbor knowledge construction is the foundation for the development of cooperative query answering systems capable of searching for close match or approximate answers when exact match answers are not available. This paper presents a technique for developing neighbor hierarchies at the attribute level. The proposed technique is called the evolved Pattern-based Knowledge Induction (ePKI) technique and allows construction of neighbor hierarchies for nonunique attributes based upon confidences, popularities, and clustering correlations of inferential relationships among attribute values. The technique is applicable for both categorical and numerical (discrete and continuous) attribute values. Attribute value neighbor hierarchies generated by the ePKI technique allow a cooperative query answering system to search for approximate answers by relaxing each individual query condition separately. Consequently, users can search for approximate answers even when the exact match answers do not exist in the database (i.e., searching for existing similar parts as part of the implementation of the concepts of rapid prototyping). Several experiments were conducted to assess the performance of the ePKI in constructing attribute-level neighbor hierarchies. Results indicate that the ePKI technique produces accurate neighbor hierarchies when strong inferential relationships appear among data. © 2006 IEEE

N=4 superconformal mechanics as a Non linear Realization

    Get PDF
An action for a superconformal particle is constructed using the non linear realization method for the group PSU(1,1|2), without introducing superfields. The connection between PSU(1,1|2) and black hole physics is discussed. The lagrangian contains six arbitrary constants and describes a non-BPS superconformal particle. The BPS case is obtained if a precise relation between the constants in the lagrangian is verified, which implies that the action becomes kappa-symmetric.Comment: new subection, references added and new acknowledgment

Two Moving-Angled 1-Branes with Electric Fields in a Partially Compact Spacetime

In this article we consider two m1m1-branes at angle in the presence of the background electric fields, in a partially compact spacetime. The branes have motions along a common direction that is perpendicular to both of them. Using the boundary state formalism, we calculate their interaction amplitude. Some special cases of this interaction will be studied in detail.Comment: 10 pages, no figure, Late

D-brane instantons and the effective field theory of flux compactifications

    Get PDF
We provide a description of the effects of fluxes on euclidean D-brane instantons purely in terms of the 4d effective action. The effect corresponds to the dressing of the effective non-perturbative 4d effective vertex with 4d flux superpotential interactions, generated when the moduli fields made massive by the flux are integrated out. The description in terms of effective field theory allows a unified description of non-perturbative effects in all flux compactifications of a given underlying fluxless model, globally in the moduli space of the latter. It also allows us to describe explicitly the effects on D-brane instantons of fluxes with no microscopic description, like non-geometric fluxes. At the more formal level, the description has interesting connections with the bulk-boundary map of open-closed two-dimensional topological string theory, and with the \NN=1 special geometry.Comment: 33 page

Micromachined Nanoporous Membranes For Blood Oxygenation Systems

    Get PDF
Nanostructured membranes with precisely engineered nanopores were fabricated on a thin silicon nitride membrane, using a combination of bulk micromachining and focused-ion-beam drilling. These membranes are designed to preserve microscale blood channel dimensions, thereby permitting the red cell shape change that enhances gas exchange in the pulmonary capillary. The membranes were tested for their mechanical stability and the results were verified with finite element analysis. Initial studies have proven the membranes to be robust, and capable of withstanding pressures typically experienced in blood oxygenator channels. A novel MEMS-based blood oxygenation system employing the nanoporous membranes is also presented. The oxygenation system is designed to have controlled blood and gas volumes for efficient blood oxygenation. © 2008 IEEE

Multi-Instanton Corrections to Superpotentials in Type II Compactifications

We consider two simple examples of multi-instanton configurations in type II 4d N=1 superstring compactifications. The first one involves O(1) and U(1) D2-instantons embedded in T^6/(Z_2 x Z_2') geometry with SU(4) gauge symmetry coming from D6-branes and the second is related to quiver gauge theory of orientifolded orbifold of conifold containing fractional D(-1)-instantons and D3-branes. The additional zero modes of instantons which appear at the intersection points are lifted through interactions stemming from dimensionally reduced F- and D-terms. It is shown that multi-instanton configurations effectively generate corrections to the usual non-perturbative superpotential for chiral matter.Comment: LaTeX, 17 pages, 3 Postscript figure

    Proposal for non-BPS D-brane action

In this short note we would like to propose a form for the action of a non-BPS D-brane, which will be manifestly supersymmetric invariant and T-duality covariant. We also explicitly show that tachyon condensation on the world-volume of this brane leads to the Dirac-Born-Infeld action for BPS D(p-1)-brane.Comment: 13 pages, corrected some typos, replaced some comment

Modular and duality properties of surface operators in N=2* gauge theories

    Get PDF
We calculate the instanton partition function of the four-dimensional N = 2* SU(N) gauge theory in the presence of a generic surface operator, using equivariant localization. By analyzing the constraints that arise from S-duality, we show that the effective twisted superpotential, which governs the infrared dynamics of the two-dimensional theory on the surface operator, satisfies a modular anomaly equation. Exploiting the localization results, we solve this equation in terms of elliptic and quasi-modular forms which resum all non-perturbative corrections. We also show that our results, derived for monodromy defects in the four-dimensional theory, match the effective twisted superpotential describing the infrared properties of certain two-dimensional sigma models coupled either to pure N = 2 or to N = 2* gauge theories

    Non(anti)commutative N=(1,1/2) Supersymmetric U(1) Gauge Theory

We study a reduction of deformation parameters in non(anti)commutative N=2 harmonic superspace to those in non(anti)commutative N=1 superspace. By this reduction we obtain the exact gauge and supersymmetry transformations in the Wess-Zumino gauge of non(anti)commutative N=2 supersymmetric U(1) gauge theory defined in the deformed harmonic superspace. We also find that the action with the first order correction in the deformation parameter reduces to the one in the N=1 superspace by some field redefinition. We construct deformed N=(1,1/2) supersymmetry in N=2 supersymmetric U(1) gauge theory in non(anti)commutative N=1 superspace.Comment: 30 pages, LaTeX, V2: a reference adde
