A simple circuit realization of the tent map
We present a very simple electronic implementation of the tent map, one of
the best-known discrete dynamical systems. This is achieved by using integrated
circuits and passive elements only. The experimental behavior of the tent map
electronic circuit is compared with its numerical simulation counterpart. We
find that the electronic circuit presents fixed points, periodicity, period
doubling, chaos and intermittency that match with high accuracy the

Moderate drinking before the unit: medicine and life assurance in Britain and the US c.1860–1930
This article describes the way in which “Anstie’s Limit” – a particular definition of moderate drinking first defined in Britain in the 1860s by the physician Francis Edmund Anstie (1833–1874) – became established as a useful measure of moderate alcohol consumption. Becoming fairly well-established in mainstream Anglophone medicine by 1900, it was also communicated to the public in Britain, North America and New Zealand through newspaper reports. However, the limit also travelled to less familiar places, including life assurance offices, where a number of different strategies for separating moderate from excessive drinkers emerged from the dialogue between medicine and life assurance. Whilst these ideas of moderation seem to have disappeared into the background for much of the twentieth century, re-emerging as the “J-shaped” curve, these early developments anticipate many of the questions surrounding uses of the “unit” to quantify moderate alcohol consumption in Britain today. The article will therefore conclude by exploring some of the lessons of this story for contemporary discussions of moderation, suggesting that we should pay more attention to whether these metrics work, where they work and why

Evaluation, design, development and delivery of a 1200 kV prototype termination. Third technical progress report, May 1, 1979-August 31, 1979
Detailed analytic and model studies of various termination concepts underway during the present period are described. Reduced scale models are being constructed for the electrostatic and the mechanical studies. Sample tests on a glass fiber reinforced insulating material show promise of an improved shatter-resistant weathercase material. Thermal analysis show that most of the termination designs being considered appear to have acceptable thermal profiles. Optimal materials, configurations, and fabrication plans are expected to be determined upon completion of these studies
Using Transcranial Doppler Sonography to Measure Cognitive Load in a Command and Control Task
Quantitative imaging of gut microbiota spatial organization
Genomic technologies have significantly advanced our understanding of the composition and diversity of host-associated microbial populations. However, their spatial organization and functional interactions relative to the host have been more challenging to study. Here we present a pipeline for the assessment of intestinal microbiota localization within immunofluorescence images of fixed gut cross-sections that includes a flexible software package, BacSpace, for high-throughput quantification of microbial organization. Applying this pipeline to gnotobiotic and human microbiota-colonized mice, we demonstrate that elimination of microbiota-accessible carbohydrates (MACs) from the diet results in thinner mucus in the distal colon, increased proximity of microbes to the epithelium, and heightened expression of the inflammatory marker REG3β. Measurements of microbe-microbe proximity reveal that a MAC-deficient diet alters monophyletic spatial clustering. Furthermore, we quantify the invasion of Helicobacter pylori into the glands of the mouse stomach relative to host mitotic progenitor cells, illustrating the generalizability of this approach
