The applicability of Process Mining to determine and align process model descriptions

Within the HU University of Applied Sciences (HU) the department HU Services (HUS) has not got enough insight in their IT Service Management processes to align them to the new Information System that is implemented to support the service management function. The problem that rises from this is that it is not clear for the HU how the actual Incident Management process as facilitated by the application is actually executed. Subsequently it is not clear what adjustments have to be made to the process descriptions to have it resemble the process in the IT Service Management tool. To determine the actual process the HU wants to use Process Mining. Therefore the research question for this study is: ‘How is Process Mining applicable to determine the actual Incident Management process and align this to the existing process model descriptions?’ For this research a case study is performed using Process Mining to check if the actual process resembles like the predefined process. The findings show that it is not possible to mine the process within the scope of the predefined process. The event data are too limited in granularity. From this we conclude that adjustment of the granularity of the given process model to the granularity of the used event data or vice versa is important

'Movement never lies.' Een conceptuele verkenning naar het uitdragen van verhalen via het lichaam, de ideeën van de danschoreograaf Martha Graham en humanistische geestelijk werk.

Vertrekpunt van dit onderzoek is het doel bij te dragen aan de theoretische ontwikkeling van een visie op de rol van lichamelijkheid binnen humanistisch geestelijk werk. Vanuit een hermeneutisch-dialogische wetenschapspositie wordt een narratieve analyse gecombineerd met fenomenologisch literatuuronderzoek. Het narratief - hier autobiografisch werk - van danschoreograaf Martha Graham wordt geanalyseerd en gekoppeld aan theorieën over lichamelijkheid en humanistisch geestelijk werk. Het lichaam opgevat als biologisch object valt samen met de huidige rationaliserende maatschappij met een mechanistisch wereldbeeld, waarin een tweede benadering van het lichaam als ervarend subject overschaduwd wordt. De narratieve analyse brengt danschoreograaf Graham naar voren als voorbeeld van het belang dat deze twee benaderingswijzen van het lichaam verbonden moeten worden. Het humanisme legt in eerste instantie de nadruk op het rationele vermogen van de mens, maar ziet in het kader van tevens een balans ook belangrijke ruimte voor een hier tegenover staande belevingssfeer (Van Praag, 1953; Mooren, 2012). Echter, simpelweg meer aandacht bieden (los van het ‘hoe’ hiertoe) aan een overschaduwd ‘lichaam-zijn denken’, confronteert ons blijkens dit onderzoek per definitie met het onvermijdelijke verval van ons lichaam. De narratieve analyse bevestigt dit taboe op de thematiek van het verval van het lichaam. Dat uitgerekend Graham niet in het reine lijkt te kunnen komen met haar ouder wordende lichaam, benadrukt sterk de noodzaak een manier te vinden om om te gaan met ‘de kwetsbaarheid van het leven’ die ons menselijk lichaam impliceert. Op precies dit punt is mogelijk een functie gelegen in het humanistisch geestelijk werk. Dit werkveld is namelijk bij uitstek geschikt om stil te staan bij de vraag naar de omgang met onze kwetsbaarheid en hierbij hulp te bieden. Het humanistisch geestelijk werk lijkt dus een passend werkveld om zowel mensen te ondersteunen bij de confrontatie met hun lichaam als ervarend subject als de balans in evenwicht te brengen tussen een lichaam ‘zijn’ en een lichaam ‘hebben’. Vanuit dit onderzoek kan daarom sterk aanbevolen worden om meer onderzoek te doen naar de thematiek van dit dubbele karakter van het lichaam en hoe voor beide benaderingen een plaats te bieden binnen het humanistisch geestelijk werk om zodoende de ‘cliënt’ zo volledig mogelijk tot ontplooiing te brengen vanuit een humanistisch gedachtegoed. Workforce Scheduling with Order-Picking Assignments in Distribution Facilities

Scheduling the availability of order pickers is crucial for effective operations in a distribution facility with manual order pickers. When order-picking activities can only be performed in specific time windows, it is essential to jointly solve the order picker shift scheduling problem and the order picker planning problem of assigning and sequencing individual orders to order pickers. This requires decisions regarding the number of order pickers to schedule, shift start and end times, break times, as well as the assignment and timing of order-picking activities. We call this the order picker scheduling problem and present two formulations. A branch-and-price algorithm and a metaheuristic are developed to solve the problem. Numerical experiments illustrate that the metaheuristic finds near-optimal solutions at 80% shorter computation times. A case study at the largest supermarket chain in The Netherlands shows the applicability of the solution approach in a real-life business application. In particular, different shift structures are analyzed, and it is concluded that the retailer can increase the minimum compensated duration for employed workers from six hours to seven or eight hours while reducing the average labor cost with up to 5% savings when a 15-minute flexibility is implemented in the scheduling of break times
