Value of Travel Time Reliability Part II: A Study of Tradeoffs Between Travel Reliability, Congestion Mitigation Strategies and Emissions
Capacity, demand, and vehicle based emissions reduction strategies are compared for several pollutants employing aggregate US congestion and vehicle fleet condition data. We find that congestion mitigation does not inevitably lead to reduced emissions; the net effect of mitigation depends on the balance of induced travel demand and increased vehicle efficiency that in turn depend on the pollutant, congestion level, and fleet composition. In the long run, capacity-based congestion improvements within certain speed intervals can reasonably be expected to increase emissions of CO2e, CO, and NOx through increased vehicle travel volume. Better opportunities for emissions reductions exist for HC and PM2.5 emissions, and on more heavily congested arterials. Advanced-efficiency vehicles with emissions rates that are less sensitive to congestion than conventional vehicles generate less emissions co-benefits from congestion mitigation
D3-D7 Quark-Gluon Plasmas at Finite Baryon Density
We present the string dual to SU(Nc) N=4 SYM, coupled to Nf massless
fundamental flavors, at finite temperature and baryon density. The solution is
determined by two dimensionless parameters, both depending on the 't Hooft
coupling at the scale set by the temperature T:
, weighting the backreaction of the flavor
fields and , where is the
baryon density. For small values of these two parameters the solution is given
analytically up to second order. We study the thermodynamics of the system in
the canonical and grand-canonical ensembles. We then analyze the energy loss of
partons moving through the plasma, computing the jet quenching parameter and
studying its dependence on the baryon density. Finally, we analyze certain
"optical" properties of the plasma. The whole setup is generalized to non
abelian strongly coupled plasmas engineered on D3-D7 systems with D3-branes
placed at the tip of a generic singular Calabi-Yau cone. In all the cases,
fundamental matter fields are introduced by means of homogeneously smeared
D7-branes and the flavor symmetry group is thus a product of abelian factors.Comment: 27 pages; v2: 29 pages, 1 (new) figure, new section 4.4 on optical

Back-reaction of Non-supersymmetric Probes: Phase Transition and Stability
We consider back-reaction by non-supersymmetric D7/anti-D7 probe branes in
the Kuperstein-Sonnenschein model at finite temperature. Using the smearing
technique, we obtain an analytical solution for the back-reacted background to
leading order in N_f/N_c. This back-reaction explicitly breaks the conformal
invariance and introduces a dimension 6 operator in the dual field theory which
is an irrelevant deformation of the original conformal field theory. We further
probe this back-reacted background by introducing an additional set of probe
brane/anti-brane. This additional probe sector undergoes a chiral phase
transition at finite temperature, which is absent when the back-reaction
vanishes. We investigate the corresponding phase diagram and the thermodynamics
associated with this phase transition. We also argue that additional probes do
not suffer from any instability caused by the back-reaction, which suggests
that this system is stable beyond the probe limit.Comment: 56 pages, 8 figures. References updated, improved discussion on

An elementary stringy estimate of transport coefficients of large temperature QCD
Modeling QCD at large temperature with a simple holographic five dimensional
theory encoding minimal breaking of conformality, allows for the calculation of
all the transport coefficients, up to second order, in terms of a single
parameter. In particular, the shear and bulk relaxation times are provided. The
result follows by deforming the AdS background with a scalar dual to a
marginally relevant operator, at leading order in the deformation parameter.Comment: 11 pages; v2: comments and references adde
Flavor brane on the baryonic branch of moduli space
We study an extra flavor in the cascading SU((k+1)M)xSU(k M) gauge theory by
adding probe D7-brane to the geometry. By finding a solution to the
kappa-symmetry equation we establish that the D7-brane is mutually
supersymmetric with the background everywhere on the baryonic branch of moduli
space. We also discuss possible applications of this result.Comment: 15 pages; v2 typo corrected, references adde
Wilson loops stability in the gauge/string correspondence
We study the stability of some classical string worldsheet solutions employed
for computing the potential energy between two static fundamental quarks in
confining and non-confining gravity duals. We discuss the fixing of the
diffeomorphism invariance of the string action, its relation with the
fluctuation orientation and the interpretation of the quark mass substraction
worldsheet needed for computing the potential energy in smooth (confining)
gravity background. We consider various dual gravity backgrounds and show by a
numerical analysis the existence of instabilities under linear fluctuations for
classical string embedding solutions having positive length function derivative
. Finally we make a brief discussion of 't Hooft loops in
non-conformal backgrounds.Comment: 34 pages, 36 figures. Reference added. Final version JHEP accepte
Non-critical, near extremal AdS_6 background as a holographic laboratory of four dimensional YM theory
We study certain properties of the low energy regime of a theory which
resembles four dimensional YM theory in the framework of a non-critical
holographic gravity dual. We use for the latter the near extremal
non-critical SUGRA. We extract the glueball spectra that associates with the
fluctuations of the dilaton, one form and the graviton and compare the results
to those of the critical near extremal model and lattice simulations. We
show an area law behavior for the Wilson loop and screening for the 't Hooft
loop. The Luscher term is found to be . We derive the
Regge trajectories of glueballs associated with the spinning folded string
configurations.Comment: 25 pages, JHEP styl
Holographic Approach to Regge Trajectory and Rotating D5 brane
We study the Regge trajectories of holographic mesons and baryons by
considering rotating strings and D5 brane, which is introduced as the baryon
vertex. Our model is based on the type IIB superstring theory with the
background of asymptotic . This background is dual to a
confining supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) with gauge condensate,
, which determines the tension of the linear potential between the quark
and anti-quark. Then the slope of the meson trajectory () is given
by this condensate as at large spin . This
relation is compatible with the other theoretical results and experiments. For
the baryon, we show the importance of spinning baryon vertex to obtain a Regge
slope compatible with the one of and series. In both cases, mesons
and baryons, the trajectories are shifted to large mass side with the same
slope for increasing current quark mass.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figure
Holographic Hadrons in a Confining Finite Density Medium
We study a sector of the hadron spectrum in the presence of finite baryon
density. We use a non-supersymmetric gravity dual to a confining guage theory
which exhibits a running dilaton. The interaction of mesons with the finite
density medium is encoded in the dual theory by a force balancing between
flavor D7-branes and a baryon vertex provided by a wrapped D5-brane. When the
current quark mass m_q is sufficiently large, the meson mass reduces,
exhibiting an interesting spectral flow as we increase the baryon density while
it has a more complicated behaviour for very small m_q.Comment: 34 pages, 20 figures, errors for some figures are fixe
Can holography reproduce the QCD Wilson line?
Recently a remarkable agreement was found between lattice simulations of long
Wilson lines and behavior of the Nambu Goto string in flat space-time. However,
the latter fails to fit the short distance behavior since it admits a tachyonic
mode for a string shorter than a critical length. In this paper we examine the
question of whether a classical holographic Wilson line can reproduce the
lattice results for Wilson lines of any length. We determine the condition on
the the gravitational background to admit a Coulombic potential at short
distances. We analyze the system using three different renormalization schemes.
We perform an explicit best fit comparison of the lattice results with the
holographic models based on near extremal D3 and D4 branes, non-critical near
extremal AdS6 model and the Klebanov Strassler model. We find that all the
holographic models examined admit after renormalization a constant term in the
potential. We argue that the curves of the lattice simulation also have such a
constant term and we discuss its physical interpretation
