    Measurement of gaseous emissions from a turbofan engine at simulated altitude conditions

    Gaseous emission from a TFE 731-2 turbofan engine were measured over a range of fuel-air ratios from idle to full power at simulated from near sea level to 13,200 m. Carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbon emissions were highest at idle and lowest at high power settings; oxides of nitrogen exhibited the reverse trend. Carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbon levels decreased with increasing altitude. Oxides of nitrogen emissions were successfully correlated by a parametric group of combustor operating variables

    Swirl-can combustor performance to near-stoichiometric fuel-air ratio

    Emissions and performance characteristics were determined for full-annulus swirl-can modular combustors operated to near stoichiometric fuel air ratios. The purposes of the tests were to obtain stoichiometric data at inlet air temperatures up to 894 K and to determine the effect of module number by investigating 120 and 72 module swirl-can combustors. The maximum average exit temperature obtained with the 120-module swirl-can combustor was 2465 K with a combustion efficiency of 95 percent at an inlet-air temperature of 894 K. The 72-module swirl-can combustor reached a maximum average exit temperature of 2306 K with a combustion efficiency of 92 percent at an inlet air temperature of 894 K. At a constant inlet air temperature, maximum oxides of nitrogen emission index values occurred at a fuel-air ratio of 0.037 for the 72-module design and 0.044 for the 120-module design.     Idle efficiency and pollution results for two-row swirl-can combustors having 72 modules

    Two 72-swirl-can-module combustors were investigated in a full annular combustor test facility at engine idle conditions typical of a 30:1 pressure-ratio engine. The effects of radial and circumferential fuel scheduling on combustion efficiency and gaseous pollutants levels were determined. Test conditions were inlet-air temperature, 452 K; inlet total pressure, 34.45 newtons per square centimeter; and reference velocity, 19.5 meters per second. A maximum combustion efficiency of 98.1 percent was achieved by radial scheduling of fuel to the inner row of swirl-can modules. Emission index values were 6.9 for unburned hydrocarbons and 50.6 for carbon monoxide at a fuel-air ratio of 0.0119. Circumferential fuel scheduling of two 90 degree sectors of the swirl-can arrays produced a maximum combustion efficiency of 97.3 percent. The emission index values were 12.0 for unburned hydrocarbons and 69.2 for carbon monoxide at a fuel-air ratio of 0.0130

    Preliminary investigation of a two-zone swirl flow combustor

    The effect of full-annular swirling-flow on a flow-zone combustor design is investigated. Swirl flow angles of 25, 35, and 45 degrees were investigated in a combustor design envelope typical of those used in modern engines. The two-zone combustor had 24 pilot-zone fuel injectors and 24 main-fuel injectors located in the centerbody between the pilot and swirl passage. Combustor performance was determined at idle, and two parametric 589 K inlet temperature conditions. Combustor performance was highest with the 45 degree swirl vane design; at the idle condition, combustion efficiency was 99.5 percent. The 45 degree swirl vane also produced the lowest pattern factor of the three angles and showed a combustor lean blowout limit below a 0.001 fuel-air ratio. Combustor total pressure drop varied from a low of 4.6 percent for the 25 degree swirl to a high of 4.9 percent for the 45 degree swirl

    Iridium-Coated Rhenium Radiation-Cooled Rockets

    Radiation-cooled rockets are used for a range of low-thrust propulsion functions, including apogee insertion, attitude control, and repositioning of satellites, reaction control of launch vehicles, and primary propulsion for planetary space- craft. The key to high performance and long lifetimes for radiation-cooled rockets is the chamber temperature capability. The material system that is currently used for radiation-cooled rockets, a niobium alloy (C103) with a fused silica coating, has a maximum operating temperature of 1370 C. Temperature limitations of C103 rockets force the use of fuel film cooling, which degrades rocket performance and, in some cases, imposes a plume contamination issue from unburned fuel. A material system composed of a rhenium (Re) substrate and an iridium (Ir) coating has demonstrated operation at high temperatures (2200 C) and for long lifetimes (hours). The added thermal margin afforded by iridium-coated rhenium (Ir/Re) allows reduction or elimination of fuel film cooling. This, in turn, leads to higher performance and cleaner spacecraft environments. There are ongoing government- and industry-sponsored efforts to develop flight Ir/ Re engines, with the primary focus on 440-N, apogee insertion engines. Complementing these Ir/Re engine development efforts is a program to address specific concerns and fundamental characterization of the Ir/Re material system, including (1) development of Ir/Re rocket fabrication methods, (2) establishment of critical Re mechanical properly data, (3) development of reliable joining methods, and (4) characterization of Ir/Re life-limiting mechanisms

    HIF-Independent Regulation of Thioredoxin Reductase 1 Contributes to the High Levels of Reactive Oxygen Species Induced by Hypoxia

    Cellular adaptation to hypoxic conditions mainly involves transcriptional changes in which hypoxia inducible factors (HIFs) play a critical role. Under hypoxic conditions, HIF protein is stabilized due to inhibition of the activity of prolyl hydroxylases (EGLNs). Because the reaction carried out by these enzymes uses oxygen as a co-substrate it is generally accepted that the hypoxic inhibition of EGLNs is due to the reduction in oxygen levels. However, several studies have reported that hypoxic generation of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) is required for HIF stabilization. Here, we show that hypoxia downregulates thioredoxin reductase 1 (TR1) mRNA and protein levels. This hypoxic TR1 regulation is HIF independent, as HIF stabilization by EGLNs inhibitors does not affect TR1 expression and HIF deficiency does not block TR1 hypoxic-regulation, and it has an effect on TR1 function, as hypoxic conditions also reduce TR1 activity. We found that, when cultured under hypoxic conditions, TR1 deficient cells showed a larger accumulation of ROS compared to control cells, whereas TR1 over-expression was able to block the hypoxic generation of ROS. Furthermore, the changes in ROS levels observed in TR1 deficient or TR1 over-expressing cells did not affect HIF stabilization or function. These results indicate that hypoxic TR1 down-regulation is important in maintaining high levels of ROS under hypoxic conditions and that HIF stabilization and activity do not require hypoxic generation of ROS

    Transient Alteration of Cellular Redox Buffering before Irradiation Triggers Apoptosis in Head and Neck Carcinoma Stem and Non-Stem Cells

    Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is an aggressive and recurrent malignancy owing to intrinsic radioresistance and lack of induction of apoptosis. The major focus of this work was to design a transient glutathione depleting strategy during the course of irradiation of HNSCC in order to overcome their radioresistance associated with redox adaptation. Methodology/Principal Findings: Treatment of SQ20B cells with dimethylfumarate (DMF), a GSH-depleting agent, and L-Buthionine sulfoximine (BSO), an inhibitor of GSH biosynthesis 4 h before a 10 Gy irradiation led to the lowering of the endogenous GSH content to less than 10 % of that in control cells and to the triggering of radiation-induced apoptotic cell death. The sequence of biochemical events after GSH depletion and irradiation included ASK-1 followed by JNK activation which resulted in the triggering of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway through Bax translocation to mitochondria. Conclusions: This transient GSH depletion also triggered radiation-induced cell death in SQ20B stem cells, a key event to overcome locoregional recurrence of HNSCC.     Introduction Fuel-spray performance has traditionally been determined using small-capacity spray nozzles (flow numbers of 4 to 26 kg/h VMPa or 0.7 to 5 lbm/h Vpsid) at atmospheric conditions, and resulting correlations for fuel-property effects and other variables affecting performance have been used for large capacity nozzles used in combustor tests. Fuel-spray tests are not conducted with large-capacity nozzles because diagnostics for nozzle peformance such as spray-drop sizes can be applied more easily and accurately to small-capacity nozzles. Measurements of drop sizes are usually made at atmospheric conditions because experiments at elevated temperatures and pressures are much more difficult than at atmospheric conditions, and indeed special technqiues have been developed for these measurements.
