    Spin-glass-like state in GdCu: role of phase separation and magnetic frustration

    We report investigations on the ground state magnetic properties of intermetallic compound GdCu through dc magnetization measurements. GdCu undergoes first order martensitic type structural transition over a wide temperature window of coexisting phases. The high temperature cubic and the low temperature orthorhombic phases have different magnetic character and they show antiferromagnetic and helimagnetic orderings below 145 K and 45 K respectively. We observe clear signature of a glassy magnetic phase below the helimagnetic ordering temperature, which is marked by thermomagnetic irreversibility, aging and memory effects. The glassy magnetic phase in GdCu is found to be rather intriguing with its origin lies in the interfacial frustration due to distinct magnetic character of the coexisting phases.Comment: Physical Review B 83, 134427 (2011

    The properties of baryonic matter have been investigated at finite density and temperature using different models. The variation of baryon masses and fractional number densities with baryon density and temperature obtained from different models have been compared. The quark hadron phase transition have been studied using Chiral Colour Dieletric (CCD) model in the quark sector. No phase transition has been seen for the different variants of the Zimanyi-Moszkowski model.     Unconventional superconductivity in the cage type compound Sc5_5Rh6_6Sn18_{18}

    We have examined the superconducting ground state properties of the caged type compound Sc5_5Rh6_6Sn18_{18} using magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin relaxation or rotation (μ\muSR) measurements. Magnetization measurements indicate type-II superconductivity with an upper critical field μ0Hc2(0)\mu_0H_{c2}(0) = 7.24 T. The zero-field cooled and field cooled susceptibility measurements unveil an onset of diamagnetic signal below TcT_{\bf c} = 4.4 K. The interpretation of the heat capacity results below TcT_{\bf c} using the α−\alpha-BCS model unveils the value of α\alpha = 2.65, which gives the dimensionless ratio 2Δ(0)/kBTc\Delta(0)/k_B T_{\bf c} = 5.3, intimating that Sc5_5Rh6_6Sn18_{18} is a strong-coupling BCS superconductor. The zero-field μ\muSR measurements in the longitudinal geometry exhibit a signature of a spontaneous appearance of the internal magnetic field below the superconducting transition temperature, indicating that the superconducting state is characterized by the broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS).     Flux-density spectral analysis for several pulsars and two newly-identified gigahertz-peaked spectra

    In this paper we present results from flux density measurements for 21 pulsars over a wide frequency range, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and the Effelsberg telescope. Our sample was a set of mostly newly discovered pulsars from the selection of candidates for gigahertz-peaked spectra (GPS) pulsars. Using the results of our observations along with previously published data, we identify two new GPS pulsars. One of them, PSR J1740+1000, with dispersion measure of 24 pc cm−3^{-3}, is the first GPS pulsar with such a low DM value.We also selected several strong candidates for objects with high frequency turnover in their spectra which require further investigation.We also revisit our source selection criteria for future searches for GPS pulsars.Comment: 10 pages, 2 tables, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    The topics covered by the sessions under the working group on Ionosphere-Thermosphere-Mesosphere dealt with various aspects of the response of the ionosphere-thermosphere coupled system and the middle atmosphere to solar variability. There were four plenary talks related to the theme of this working group, thirteen oral presentations in three sessions and six poster presentations. A number of issues related to effects of solar variability on the ionosphere-thermosphere, observed using satellite and ground-based data including ground magnetometer observations, radio beacon studies of equatorial spread F, and modeling of some of these effects, were discussed. Radar observations of the mesosphere-lower thermosphere region and a future mission to study the coupling of thunderstorm processes to this region, the ionosphere, and magnetosphere were also presented

    Non-extensivity of the QCD pT spectra

    We try to establish a connection between the hadronic distributions, in proton-proton collisions at very high transverse momentum pTp_{\mathrm{T}}, obtained via perturbative QCD and the Tsallis non extensive statistics. Our motivation is that while the former is expected to be valid at extremely high momentum, due to asymptotic freedom, the latter has been very successful in describing experimental spectra over a wide range of momentum. Matching the non extensive statistics with the asymptotic pTp_{\mathrm{T}} behaviour expected from QCD leads to the value of q=1.25q=1.25.Comment: 4 page

    Constraints on R-parity violating supersymmetry from neutral meson mixing

    Upper bounds at the weak scale are put on all λijk′λimn′\lambda'_{ijk}\lambda'_{imn} type products of R-parity violating supersymmetry that may affect K-Kbar and B-Bbar mixing. We constrain all possible products, including some not considered before, using next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the mixing amplitudes. Constraints are obtained for both real and imaginary parts of the couplings.
