    Forte: An Interactive Visual Analytic Tool for Trust-Augmented Net Load Forecasting

    Accurate net load forecasting is vital for energy planning, aiding decisions on trade and load distribution. However, assessing the performance of forecasting models across diverse input variables, like temperature and humidity, remains challenging, particularly for eliciting a high degree of trust in the model outcomes. In this context, there is a growing need for data-driven technological interventions to aid scientists in comprehending how models react to both noisy and clean input variables, thus shedding light on complex behaviors and fostering confidence in the outcomes. In this paper, we present Forte, a visual analytics-based application to explore deep probabilistic net load forecasting models across various input variables and understand the error rates for different scenarios. With carefully designed visual interventions, this web-based interface empowers scientists to derive insights about model performance by simulating diverse scenarios, facilitating an informed decision-making process.     Spatio-temporal prediction of land surface temperature using semantic kriging

    Spatio-temporal prediction and forecasting of land surface temperature (LST) are relevant. However, several factors limit their usage, such as missing pixels, line drops, and cloud cover in satellite images. Being measured close to the Earth's surface, LST is mainly influenced by the land use/land cover (LULC) distribution of the terrain. This article presents a spatio-temporal interpolation method which semantically models LULC information for the analysis of LST. The proposed spatio-temporal semantic kriging (ST-SemK) approach is presented in two variants: non-separable ST-SemK (ST-SemKNSep) and separable ST-SemK (ST-SemKSep). Empirical studies have been carried out with derived Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite images of LST for two spatial regions: Kolkata, India and Dallas, Texas, U.S. It has been observed that semantically enhanced spatio-temporal modeling by ST-SemK yields more accurate prediction results than spatio-temporal ordinary kriging and other existing methods

    Study on the role of rGO in enhancing the electrochromic performance of WO3 film

    In the present work, an improved electrochromic thin film has been developed with faster color switching time on incorporation of rGO in WO3 film. Here, pristine WO3 and rGO-WO3 (rGO concentration varying from 1-7wt %) based nanocomposite electrochromic films were fabricated on ITO coated glass substrate, by utilizing a facile sol-gel dip-coating technique. Detailed structural and morphological analyses of the films were carried out using XRD, FESEM, TEM and Raman Spectroscopy. Assimilating the electrochromic properties of all the films showed that, 5wt% rGO incorporated WO3 film gave a maximized electrochemical performance with minimum degradation in optical transmittance. The film also exhibited an optical modulation of similar to 50% and a better switching response having coloration time (t(c)) similar to 5.3 s and bleaching time (t(b)) similar to 6.2 s as compared to the pristine film (t(c) similar to 9.6 s, t(b) similar to 10.4 s). Incorporation of rGO also resulted in an enhancement of coloration efficiency from similar to 81 to similar to 386 cm(2)/C. The Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) analysis of pristine and rGO loaded film clearly revealed better charge transfer on incorporation of rGO. The cyclic stability study exhibited similar to 25% deterioration in optical transparency of the bare WO3 film which was < 10% for the rGO impregnated film. An ex-situ XRD analysis demonstrated that a crystal dislocation occurring in pristine WO3 sample was responsible for the same

    A rare case of isolated testicular tuberculosis and review of literature

    Testicular tuberculosis (TB) is a rare form of genitourinary TB. It is usually presented as painful or painless testicular swelling with or without scrotal ulceration or discharging sinus. Infertility may occur. Epididymal involvement is usually seen in testicular TB. In most cases, genital TB is associated with TB involvement of kidneys or lower urinary tract. Ultrasound (USG) and USG-guided fine needle aspiration cytology of testicular swelling confirm the diagnosis. Anti-TB chemotherapy is the mainstay of treatment to ensure the complete resolution of the lesion. However, in very few cases, orchidectomy is required for both diagnosis and treatment. Here, we report a very rare case of left sided isolated testicular TB in a 20-year-old male who was completely cured with 6 months regimen of anti-TB chemotherapy

    The complexity and diversity of eukaryotic organisms are a feat of nature’s engineering. Pulling the strings of such an intricate machinery requires an even more masterful and crafty approach. Only the number and type of responses that they generate exceed the staggering proportions of environmental signals perceived and processed by eukaryotes. Hence, at first glance, the cell’s sparse stockpile of controlling factors does not seem remotely adequate to carry out this response. The question as to how eukaryotes sense and respond to environmental cues has no single answer. It is an amalgamation, an interplay between several processes, pathways, and factors—a combinatorial control. A short description of some of the most important elements that operate this entire conglomerate is given in this paper

    Challenges in supervision, monitoring, and reporting in anemia programme implementation in Odisha, India: A qualitative process documentation

    Introduction: Anemia is a major public health challenge in India. Despite national programmes and targeted interventions over the years, the decline has been unsatisfactory. National Iron Plus Initiative (NIPI) was launched by the Government of India with a vision to combat anemia. In this context, we discuss the programmatic facilitators and issues in the monitoring, supervision, and reporting aspects of NIPI implementation. Materials and Methods: A process documentation study was undertaken in four districts of Odisha to assess the NIPI implementation. A total of 170 interviews were conducted during March–May 2016 among officials and frontline workers through qualitative techniques such as in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and process observation. Data analysis was thematic using NVivo software. Results: Monitoring and supervision consisted primarily of visiting field sites by supervisors and review of the progress in meetings with inadequate documentation. Lack of coordination and ownership among the various departments involved were observed as revealed in the interviews. Some of the reporting formats were outdated and missed section for IFA syrup. Focus had been on the collection of data, but its utilization for informed decision-making and policy decisions was lacking. Conclusion: Better interdepartmental coordination and ownership, streamlining the reporting system and web-based monitoring system need to be prioritized to improve the effectiveness of the programme. The three key departments involved must strengthen the evaluation process for sustained outcomes to reduce anemia burden

    Chronotype assessment of the Bengalese adolescents: an observational study using a Bengali version of the reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (rMEQ)

    Chronotype or morningness orientation is an interpersonal characteristic that influence human physiology and psychology and less is known about the chronotype of the Bengalese adolescents in India. We aimed to study the chronotype of this population by using a translated version of a previously established questionnaire. 471 Bengali-speaking adolescents (13–14 years) (boys = 268, girls = 203) of West Bengal, India were included in this study and their chronotype was assessed using an interviewer-administered Bengali version of the reduced Morningness–eveningness Questionnaire (rMEQ). The reliability of the translated instrument was assessed using Cronbach’s α. Chi-squared test was used to observe the chronotype distribution between the boys and girls. rMEQ scores of all the participants ranged between 5 and 25 with a median value of 17 (25–75th percentile: 15–20). Cronbach’s α was 0.751. Using cut off scores, we found 47% of our study participants were of morning chronotype, whereas the intermediate and evening types were of 50% and 3%, respectively. Chi-squared test demonstrated a significantly higher morningness among boys than the girls. The study describes the morningness orientation pattern of the Bengalese adolescents that may have some defined influence on their physiological and psychological characteristics including health and disease.This study was partially supported by the unrestricted internal research grant of the Allergy & Asthma Research Centre, Kolkat

    Cytoprotective autophagy as a pro-survival strategy in ART-resistant malaria parasites

    Abstract Despite several initiatives to subside the global malaria burden, the spread of artemisinin-resistant parasites poses a big threat to malaria elimination. Mutations in PfKelch13 are predictive of ART resistance, whose underpinning molecular mechanism remains obscure. Recently, endocytosis and stress response pathways such as the ubiquitin-proteasome machinery have been linked to artemisinin resistance. With Plasmodium, however, ambiguity persists regarding a role in ART resistance for another cellular stress defence mechanism called autophagy. Therefore, we investigated whether, in the absence of ART treatment, basal autophagy is augmented in PfK13-R539T mutant ART-resistant parasites and analyzed whether PfK13-R539T endowed mutant parasites with an ability to utilize autophagy as a pro-survival strategy. We report that in the absence of any ART treatment, PfK13-R539T mutant parasites exhibit increased basal autophagy compared to PfK13-WT parasites and respond aggressively through changes in autophagic flux. A clear cytoprotective role of autophagy in parasite resistance mechanism is evident by the observation that a suppression of PI3-Kinase (PI3K) activity (a master autophagy regulator) rendered difficulty in the survival of PfK13-R539T ART-resistant parasites. In conclusion, we now show that higher PI3P levels reported for mutant PfKelch13 backgrounds led to increased basal autophagy that acts as a pro-survival response to ART treatment. Our results highlight PfPI3K as a druggable target with the potential to re-sensitize ART-resistant parasites and identify autophagy as a pro-survival function that modulates ART-resistant parasite growth
