    A bi-directional charged particle telescope to observe flux, energy spectrum and angular distribution of relativistic and non-relativistic particles

    A Charged Particle Telescope (CPT) was designed, fabricated and calibrated to make the following observations: (1) discrimination between various singly charged particles, e.g., electrons, muons and protons, in about 5 to 100 MeV energy range; (2) measurement of the flux and the energy of the charged particles incident to the telescope from two opposite directions and stopping in the telescope, thus obtaining flux and energy spectrum of downward and upward moving charged particles; and (3) measurement of the broad angular distribution of selected particles as a function of azimuthal angle. This telescope can be used to study low energy electron, muon and proton energy spectra. The experiment was flown in a high altitude balloon from Hyderabad, India, in December 1984. This same equipment is also useful in ground level electron, muon spectrum study

    Physical chemistry has two important tools namely, thermo-dynamics which indicates the possibility of a reaction, and kinetics giving the rate at which a reaction proceeds. This paper indicates how these tools can profitably by utilized for the extraction of metals. The authors illus-trate as to how physical chemistry has been helpful in the clear understanding of the high-temperature reactions and in searching out new methods for metal-winning. A fer instances where thermo-dynamic data have been applied for developing scientific extraction methods are pointed out and their limitations indicated. The instances cited include the separation of nickel and zinc from a mixture of their oxides, the preparation of titanium tetraoxide and the development of Pidgeons process for the production of magnesium

    Theoretical considerations involved in metal extraction reactions under vacuum have been discussed.The general advantages of carrying out reactions under vacuum are derived from the lowered temperature for reaction and the possibility of carrying reactions to completion, by the removal of one of the reaction products.     Radio and near-infrared observations of the steep spectrum Galactic plane radio source WKB 0314+57.8

    Radio and near-infared observations towards the steep spectrum Galactic plane radio source WKB 0314+57.8 are presented, in order to clarify the nature of this source. The radio observations include archival and survey data, together with new Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations at 617 MHz. The near-infrared observations are in the J and K bands, from the Gemini instrument on the Shane 3-m telescope. The radio observations show that WKB 0314+57.8 is extended, with an very steep spectrum (with flux density proportional to frequency to -2.5 power between 40 MHz and 1.5 GHz). The colour--magnitude diagram constructed from near-infrared observations of the field suggests the presence of a z approx 0.08 galaxy cluster behind the Galactic plane, reddened by about 6 magnitudes of visual extinction. Although the steep spectrum source has no obvious identification, two other radio sources in the field covered by the near-infrared observations have tentative identifications with galaxies. These observations indicate that WKB 0314+57.8 is a relic source in a cluster of galaxies, not a pulsar.Comment: 6 pages, to appear in MNRAS, typos correcte
