Projecting Progress: Are Cities on Track to Achieve the SDGs by 2030?

    Get PDF
This report explores for the first time the scale of the challenge for 20 cities across the world to reach selected targets set out in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). More than half of the targets included will require a profound acceleration of efforts if they are to be achieved by the majority of selected cities. Targets that are not on course to be met by the majority of cities studied include ending child malnutrition, achieving full and productive female employment, access to adequate housing and access to drinking water and sanitation. The report makes a series of recommendations to increase progress towards the SDGs, including:Central governments and donors should work to strengthen local governments' capacities.Government and city administrations should invest more in ways to monitor progress on the SDGs.Statistical offices' and cities' information systems should improve the data available

Breaking vendors and city locks through a semantic-enabled global interoperable Internet-of-Things system: a smart parking case

    Get PDF
The Internet of Things (IoT) is unanimously identified as one of the main technology enablers for the development of future intelligent environments. However, the current IoT landscape is suffering from large fragmentation with many platforms and vendors competing with their own solution. This fragmented scenario is now jeopardizing the uptake of the IoT, as investments are not carried out partly because of the fear of being captured in lock-in situations. To overcome these fears, interoperability solutions are being put forward in order to guarantee that the deployed IoT infrastructure, independently of its manufacturer and/or platform, can exchange information, data and knowledge in a meaningful way. This paper presents a Global IoT Services (GIoTS) use case demonstrating how semantic interoperability among five different smart city IoT deployments can be leveraged to develop a smart urban mobility service. The application that has been developed seamlessly consumes data from them for providing parking guidance and mobility suggestions at the five locations (Santander and Barcelona in Spain and Busan, Seoul and Seongnam in South Korea) where the abovementioned IoT deployments are installed. The paper is also presenting the key aspects of the system enabling the interoperability among the three underlying heterogeneous IoT platforms. This research was funded by European Union’s H2020 Programme for research, technological development and demonstration within the projects “Worldwide Interoperability for Semantics IoT (WISE-IoT)” (under grant agreement No 723156) and “Bridging the Interoperability Gap of the Internet of Things (BIG-IoT)” (under grant agreement No. 688038) and, in part, by the Spanish Government by means of the Project ADVICE “Dynamic Provisioning of Connectivity in High Density 5G Wireless Scenarios” under Grant TEC2015-71329-C2-1-R

Monsoon shrimp fishery at "Gangoli Light House"

    Get PDF
Gangoli light house landing centre of Udupi District along Kamataka coast locally known as 'Gangoli madi' is an important indigenous fish landing Centre. During monsoon season, this centre is having advantage for safe landing and berthing facilities for indigenous crafts and the fishermen from nearby fishing villages move to this centre for their fishing operations. Monsoon fishery is carried out by wooden/fibre glass canoes fitted with outboard engines of power ranging from 9.9 to 25 hp. The major gears in operations are ring seines locally known as "matubala" or ranibala, monofilament gillnet known as 'beenibala' and cast net known as beedubala. "Matubala" usually has a mesh size of 12-22 mm and "beenibala" with a mesh size of 55 mm, are generally operated within a depth of 15 meter

Prohepcidin Levels in Refractory Anaemia Caused by Lead Poisoning

    Get PDF
Recent research evidence suggests a central role for hepcidin in iron homeostasis. Hepcidin is a hormone synthesized in the liver. Hepcidin is also thought to play a vital role in the pathogenic mechanism of anaemia in patients with inflammation or chronic disease. A 38-year-old female who presented with recurrent abdominal pain was found to have raised urinary porphyrins and a blood lead level of 779 μg/l. Her haemoglobin level was 8.3 g/dl. Her MCV was normal. Serum ferritin, B12 and folate were normal. Her serum prohepcidin level was 2,489 ng/ml (normal <450 ng/ml). To our knowledge, this is the first report of raised prohepcidin levels in a patient with anaemia of chronic disease resulting from lead poisoning
