Surface recombination measurements on III–V candidate materials for nanostructure light-emitting diodes
Surface recombination is an important characteristic of an optoelectronic material. Although surface recombination is a limiting factor for very small devices it has not been studied intensively. We have investigated surface recombination velocity on the exposed surfaces of the AlGaN, InGaAs, and InGaAlP material systems by using absolute photoluminescence quantum efficiency measurements. Two of these three material systems have low enough surface recombination velocity to be usable in nanoscale photonic crystal light-emitting diodes
RFI Identification and Mitigation Using Simultaneous Dual Station Observations
RFI mitigation is a critically important issue in radio astronomy using
existing instruments as well as in the development of next-generation radio
telescopes, such as the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). Most designs for the SKA
involve multiple stations with spacings of up to a few thousands of kilometers
and thus can exploit the drastically different RFI environments at different
stations. As demonstrator observations and analysis for SKA-like instruments,
and to develop RFI mitigation schemes that will be useful in the near term, we
recently conducted simultaneous observations with Arecibo Observatory and the
Green Bank Telescope (GBT). The observations were aimed at diagnosing RFI and
using the mostly uncorrelated RFI between the two sites to excise RFI from
several generic kinds of measurements such as giant pulses from Crab-like
pulsars and weak HI emission from galaxies in bands heavily contaminated by
RFI. This paper presents observations, analysis, and RFI identification and
excision procedures that are effective for both time series and spectroscopy

The Index of (White) Noises and their Product Systems
(See detailed abstract in the article.) We single out the correct class of
spatial product systems (and the spatial endomorphism semigroups with which the
product systems are associated) that allows the most far reaching analogy in
their classifiaction when compared with Arveson systems. The main differences
are that mere existence of a unit is not it sufficient: The unit must be
CENTRAL. And the tensor product under which the index is additive is not
available for product systems of Hilbert modules. It must be replaced by a new
product that even for Arveson systems need not coincide with the tensor
product
The effects of profiles on supersonic jet noise
The effect of velocity profiles on supersonic jet noise are studied by using stability calculations made for a shock-free coannular jet, with both the inner and outer flows supersonic. The Mach wave emission process is modeled as the noise generated by the large scale turbulent structures or the instability waves in the mixing region. Both the vortex-sheet and the realistic finite thickness shear layer models are considered. The stability calculations were performed for both inverted and normal velocity profiles. Comparisons are made with the results for an equivalent single jet, based on equal thrust, mass flow rate and exit area to that of the coannular jet. The advantages and disadvantages of these velocity profiles as far as noise radiation is concerned are discussed. It is shown that the Rayleigh's model prediction of the merits and demerits of different velocity profiles are in good agreement with the experimental data
Nonlinear stability of supersonic jets
The stability calculations made for a shock-free supersonic jet using the model based on parabolized stability equations are presented. In this analysis the large scale structures, which play a dominant role in the mixing as well as the noise radiated, are modeled as instability waves. This model takes into consideration non-parallel flow effects and also nonlinear interaction of the instability waves. The stability calculations have been performed for different frequencies and mode numbers over a range of jet operating temperatures. Comparisons are made, where appropriate, with the solutions to Rayleigh's equation (linear, inviscid analysis with the assumption of parallel flow). The comparison of the solutions obtained using the two approaches show very good agreement
Cashew research in India
Cashew, after its introduction from Brazil during the 16th Century, has established very well in India. A total of 40 high-yielding varieties have been released so far by the Directorate of Cashew Research, Puttur, and various Agricultural Universities, for cultivation. Of these, 13 are hybrids and 27 are selections. Research achievements in the area of crop improvement, management, protection and post-harvest technology over the last six decades are reviewed and documented here. As India has been importing raw nuts to the tune of 6.5 lakh tons annually to cater the demand of established processing factories, research priorities have been identified to meet the challenges of enhancing production and productivity of cashew in the country
Boundary crossing Random Walks, clinical trials and multinomial sequential estimation
A sufficient condition for the uniqueness of multinomial sequential unbiased
estimators is provided generalizing a classical result for binomial samples.
Unbiased estimators are applied to infer the parameters of multidimensional or
multinomial Random Walks which are observed until they reach a boundary. An
application to clinical trials is presented
