Integrity in Self-Organizing Societies: The Case of Libor
From a cross-disciplinary social science perspective, it is evident that financial and economic development is not a matter simply of a propern social structure (e.g., Laissez-faire free-market) but also requires good individual leadership (competence and honesty). Financial systems require both structure and leadership, despite some economic scholars holding to the idea of an economic structural mechanism of a âperfect marketâ. However, good leadership and proper societal structure together is not a simple process, nor certainly obtained, as empirically there are no societal âmechanismsâ. A case, such as Libor, clearly illustrated the importance of both structure and leadership in the proper operation of societal systems. Bad leadership can corrupt a societal structure; and a corrupt societal structure can enable bad leadership. The case of Libor provides empirical evidence for the social science proposition that a financial system requires both proper government regulation and integrity in private sector operations. But this is not easily achieved in societies of self-organizing systems. We apply a cross-disciplinary framework of systems dynamics to analyze the Libor event, as a kind of challenge in the control of self-organizing societies, which are facilitated by information technology processes

Modeling the Concept of âHegemonyâ in International Financial Systems
In this paper, we perform a graphical analysis of hegemonic leadership in international finance, based upon the historical studies by Kindleberger and Sobel about the Dutch and British financial hegemony in the 1600s-1800s. The socio-technical systems of public and of private finance in nations interact with the self-organizing system of international finance. We design a systems model for a stable international financial system in a global world, using the lessons from the history of Dutch and British fiscal hegemony
What\u27s in a Name? Characterization and Caricature in Dorothy Thompson Criticism
By the mid-1930S the journalist Dorothy Thompson had become sufficienty important for writers and cartoonists to satirize her. They gave her a multitude of labels-zoological, mythological, and otherwise-which Betz surveys herein
Project EDUCARE: Documentation of scales for elementary school children
Project EDUCARE: Documentation of scales for early childhood educators in child care centers
Observer variability assessing US scans of the preterm brain: the ELGAN study
Neurosonography can assist clinicians and can provide researchers with documentation of brain lesions. Unfortunately, we know little about the reliability of sonographically derived diagnoses
The James Webb Space Telescope Mission
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies,
expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling
for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least .
With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000
people realized that vision as the James Webb Space Telescope. A
generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of
the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the
scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000
team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image
quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief
history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing
program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite
detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit.Comment: Accepted by PASP for the special issue on The James Webb Space
