An unusual case of intertrigo in an adult caused by purely cutaneous Langerhans cell histiocytosis

We report a case of persistent intertrigo in an adult, eventually diagnosed as cutaneous Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). It is known that LCH has a predilection for intertriginous areas, however purely cutaneous disease as in our case, is uncommon and usually other systems are affected. Following the report, literature of similar cases is reviewed to determine possible outcomes and to decide on the best possible treatment options.peer-reviewe

CAPACITIES AND PROBABILISTIC BELIEFS: A PRECARIOUS COEXISTENCE

    Get PDF
This paper raises the problem of how to define revealed probabilistic beliefs in the context of the capacity/Choquet Expected Utility model. At the center of the analysis is a decision-theoretically axiomatized definition of ""revealed unambiguous events."" The definition is shown to impose surprisingly strong restrictions on the underlying capacity and on the set of unambiguous events; in particular, the latter is always an algebra. Alternative weaker definitions violate even minimal criteria of adequacy. Rather than finding fault with the proposed definition, we argue that our results indicate that the CEU model is epistemically restrictive, and point out that analogous problems do not arise within the Maximin Expected Utility model.

Exploring the Effect of a Collaborative Problem-Based Learning Simulation Within a Technology-Enhanced Learning Environment on Tutor Perceptions and Student Learning Outcomes

Alternative learning experiences and environments are being increasingly investigated, in response partly to technological developments but also following the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Educators have found that pedagogic strategies and learning environments profoundly influence behaviour of students, approach to learning, learning outcomes and overall level of satisfaction. There is nascent literature on how specific pedagogical approaches (in this case, collaborative problem-based learning) and environments (technology-enhanced learning environment: TELE) can positively impact student learning. In this article, the authors explore the value of a technology-enhanced problem-based simulation exercise for achieving learning objectives and engagement. This approach is novel in combining research on active learning, collaboration and simulation within a specific context. This was a mixed-method study, and staff and student participants were engaged, gathering data through several methods, including questionnaires and interviews. The data was analyzed through different methods, including thematic analysis. The results suggested that the pedagogic approach and learning environment explored in this study positively enhanced student understanding of subject content and learners’ ability to apply abstract theories and concepts. Moreover, evidence shows that these interventions increased learner motivation and knowledge retention.

Effects of large-scale Amazon forest degradation on climate and air quality through fluxes of carbon dioxide, water, energy, mineral dust and isoprene

Loss of large areas of Amazonian forest, through either direct human impact or climate change, could exert a number of influences on the regional and global climates. In the Met Office Hadley Centre coupled climate–carbon cycle model, a severe drying of this region initiates forest loss that exerts a number of feedbacks on global and regional climates, which magnify the drying and the forest degradation. This paper provides an overview of the multiple feedback process in the Hadley Centre model and discusses the implications of the results for the case of direct human-induced deforestation. It also examines additional potential effects of forest loss through changes in the emissions of mineral dust and biogenic volatile organic compounds. The implications of ecosystem–climate feedbacks for climate change mitigation and adaptation policies are also discussed

EQUITY, BONDS, GROWTH AND INFLATION IN A QUADRATIC INFINITE HORIZON ECONOMY

This paper exhibits a class of infinite-horizon economies with incomplete markets (GEI) for which the equilibrium can be explicitly derived. We show that if agents have preference orderings represented by expected discounted quadratic utilities and if their endowments are tradable, then the equilibrium consumption and welfare of agents can be expressed as a function of the least variable income stream (LVI) obtainable by trading on the financial markets. If in addition the economy has a Markov structure, then the LVI can be calculated. The model is used to study the behavior of agents on the equity and bond markets in an economy in which the growth and inflation processes are calibrated to fit US data. Two related findings emerge: first, the proportion of bonds in the portfolios of even the most risk-averse agents is small (less than 2%); second, since equity dominates the portfolios of agents, the welfare loss due to variable inflation is small.
