Application of remote sensing technology to land evaluation, planning utilization of land resources, and assessment of westland habitat in eastern South Dakota, parts 1 and 2
The author has identified the following significant results. LANDSAT fulfilled the requirements for general soils and land use information. RB-57 imagery was required to provide the information and detail needed for mapping soils for land evaluation. Soils maps for land evaluation were provided on clear mylar at the scale of the county highway map to aid users in locating mapping units. Resulting mapped data were computer processed to provided a series of interpretive maps (land value, limitations to development, etc.) and area summaries for the users
Inventory of wetland habitat using remote sensing for the proposed Oahe irrigation unit in eastern South Dakota
An inventory of wetlands for the area included in the proposed Oahe irrigation project was conducted to provide supplemental data for the wildlife mitigation plan. Interpretation techniques for inventoring small wetlands in the low relief terrain of the Lake Dakota Plain were documented and data summaries included. The data were stored and tabulated in a computerized spatial data analysis system
The development of a menthol solution for use during sport and exercise
Menthol mouth-swilling has been shown to improve performance across differing exercise modalities, yet no work has been conducted to ascertain the preferred concentration of menthol within a swill. Colour has also been shown to influence psychophysiological outcomes, and may influence the efficacy of ergogenic aids.
We conducted two experiments: one to ascertain preferred menthol concentration (0.005–0.105% menthol), the second to assess colour preference (Light Blue,Dark Blue, Light Green, Dark Green, Red). Participants rated swills for Smell, Taste, Freshness, Mouth Feel and Irritation (plus Appearance in the second trial) via 15 cm Visual Analogue Scales (VAS), having swilled and expectorated 25 mL of fluid. Both trials employed a crossover design, with tasting order assigned by Latin squares. Differences were assessed for statistical significance (p < 0.05) using one-way repeated measures ANOVAs. Standardised mean differences �90% confidence intervals were calculated to assess the magnitude of any observed differences. No significant differences were found between concentrations for total VAS score, but higher concentrations demonstrated a greater number of small effects. Similarly, no significant differences between colours were found. Small effects were found when Light Green was compared to Dark Green and Red. Effects were trivial when Light Green was compared to Light Blue (0.05 � 0.20) and Dark Blue (0.19 � 0.32). We recommend athletes employ a Light Green or Light Blue 0.1% menthol mouth-swill
Effective Radii and Color Gradients in Radio Galaxies
We present de Vaucouleurs' effective radii in B and R bands for a sample of
Molonglo Reference Catalogue radio galaxies and a control sample of normal
galaxies. We use the ratio of the scale lengths in the two bands as an
indicator to show that the radio galaxies tend to have excess of blue color in
their inner region much more frequently than the control galaxies. We show that
the scale length ratio is a useful indicator of radial color variation even

Finding Person Relations in Image Data of the Internet Archive
The multimedia content in the World Wide Web is rapidly growing and contains
valuable information for many applications in different domains. For this
reason, the Internet Archive initiative has been gathering billions of
time-versioned web pages since the mid-nineties. However, the huge amount of
data is rarely labeled with appropriate metadata and automatic approaches are
required to enable semantic search. Normally, the textual content of the
Internet Archive is used to extract entities and their possible relations
across domains such as politics and entertainment, whereas image and video
content is usually neglected. In this paper, we introduce a system for person
recognition in image content of web news stored in the Internet Archive. Thus,
the system complements entity recognition in text and allows researchers and
analysts to track media coverage and relations of persons more precisely. Based
on a deep learning face recognition approach, we suggest a system that
automatically detects persons of interest and gathers sample material, which is
subsequently used to identify them in the image data of the Internet Archive.
We evaluate the performance of the face recognition system on an appropriate
standard benchmark dataset and demonstrate the feasibility of the approach with
two use cases
Uncertainty Quantification in Atomistic Simulations of Silicon using Interatomic Potentials
Atomistic simulations often rely on interatomic potentials to access greater
time- and length- scales than those accessible to first principles methods such
as density functional theory (DFT). However, since a parameterised potential
typically cannot reproduce the true potential energy surface of a given system,
we should expect a decrease in accuracy and increase in error in quantities of
interest calculated from simulations. Quantifying the uncertainty on the
outputs of atomistic simulations is thus an important, necessary step so that
there is confidence in results and available metrics to explore improvements in
said simulations. Here, we address this research question by forming ensembles
of Atomic Cluster Expansion (ACE) potentials, and using Conformal Prediction
with DFT training data to provide meaningful, calibrated error bars on several
quantities of interest for silicon: the bulk modulus, elastic constants,
relaxed vacancy formation energy, and the vacancy migration barrier. We
evaluate the effects on uncertainty bounds using a range of different

Novel Processing of Hydroxyapatite-Zirconia Composites using Nano-Sized Particles
A method to produce composites of hydroxyapatite (HA) with ZrO2 (Y-TZP) additions between 0 and 10 wt % at a low sinter temperature of 750 °C is presented. The method limits the amount of reaction between the HA and ZrO2. A ZrO2 loading level that would improve strength while limiting the decomposition of the HA is studied

Pion parton distribution functions from lattice QCD
We report on recent results for the pion matrix element of the twist-2
operator corresponding to the average momentum of non-singlet quark densities.
For the first time finite volume effects of this matrix element are
investigated and come out to be surprisingly large. We use standard Wilson and
non-perturbatively improved clover actions in order to control better the
extrapolation to the continuum limit. Moreover, we compute, fully
non-perturbatively, the renormalization group invariant matrix element, which
allows a comparison with experimental results in a broad range of energy
scales. Finally, we discuss the remaining uncertainties, the extrapolation to
