The summer drenching program has provided highly effective sheep worm control in Western Australia for many years - but recent research challenges its long term sustainability. Trial results suggest that in large parts of the State, summer drenching is the main factor leading to the development of drench resistant worms. Alternative programs less likely to lead to drench resistance will require greater monitoring of worm burdens and panning pasture moves

Goal-Oriented Adaptivity in Space-Time Finite Element Simulations of Nonstationary Incompressible Flows

Subject of this paper is the development of an a posteriori error estimator for nonstationary incompressible flow problems. The error estimator is computable and able to assess the temporal and spatial discretization errors separately. Thereby, the error is measured in an arbitrary quantity of interest because measuring errors in global norms is often of minor importance in practical applications. The basis for this is a finite element discretization in time and space. The techniques presented here also provide local error indicators which are used to adaptively refine the temporal and spatial discretization. A key ingredient in setting up an efficient discretization method is balancing the error contributions due to temporal and spatial discretization. To this end, a quantitative assessment of the individual discretization errors is required. The described method is validated by an established Navier-Stokes benchmark

Leaving it all to the Resource Management Act 1991: The Demise of the Tort of Private Nuisance

This article examines the development of the tort of private nuisance in New Zealand, with particular reference to the impact of the Resource Management Act 1991. The challenges confronting, and remedies available to, potential nuisance plaintiffs are contrasted with those provided for under the Act. Case studies of potential nuisance situations sourced from local authority files are used to illustrate some likely approaches to nuisance situations. The author argues that recent cases such as Hawkes Bay Protein Ltd v Davidson are sending the tort of private nuisance down the path of obsolescence

Totalitarianism as a 'political chameleon' in a time of transition: the analysis of Sigmund Neumann (1904-1962)

'Der aus Leipzig stammende Historiker und Politikwissenschaftler Sigmund Neumann musste 1933 wegen seiner jüdischen Herkunft in die USA emigrieren. 1942 veröffentlichte er dort sein Bahn brechendes Werk 'Permanent Revolution'. 20 Jahre später wollte er - bereits schwer krank - für die Neuauflage eine Einleitung und drei ergänzende Kapitel schreiben. Nach Neumanns Tod am 22. Oktober 1962 schrieb Hans Kohn für die 2. Auflage von 'Permanent Revolution' eine eigene Einleitung. In dem hier veröffentlichten Beitrag werden Neumanns Ergänzungen, soweit er sie noch abschließen konnte, vorgestellt. In seinen Texten warnt Neumann vor raschen Generalisierungen als Grundlage für eine Totalitarismustheorie mit umfassendem Erklärungsanspruch. Vielmehr plädiert er für ein hohes Maß an Differenzierung sowohl der totalitären wie der autoritären Diktaturen. Internal parasites and association with diarrhoea in sheep at an abattoir in Western Australia

Diarrhoea (scouring) is an important issue for the sheep meat industry. Scouring is a major risk factor for fleece soiling and consequential carcase contamination with microbes that cause meat spoilage and potential dangers for humans (2). There is little information on the causes of scouring in sheep at slaughter. Strongyle worm infections are commonly implicated in scouring and reduced production, yet there is no published data quantifying strongyle infections in scouring and normal sheep at abattoirs. In addition, Giardia and Cryptosporidium have been associated with scouring in ruminants, but little is known about the prevalence, genotypes present or the effect on production in sheep populations. Das Streben nach Sicherheit und Gleichheit unter dem Schutz eines starken Staates hat hierzulande einen höheren Stellenwert als die Risiken der Freiheit in Selbstverantwortung.
