[The \u27lost \u27 church of Zelem.]Tot in de 17de eeuw bevond zich net voorbij het Limburgse dorpje Zelem, langsheen de huidige E314 autostrade, een mysterieus middeleeuws kerkje. Op vraag van de Vlaamse overheid startte studiebureau RAAP er een waarderend archeologisch onderzoek in combinatie met een zoektocht in verschillende archieven. Een schat aan nieuwe informatie was het resultaat. Op 6 november 2014 werd deze voormalige gewijde grond zelfs wettelijk beschermd. Het Lievekanaal, een grootschalig project dat gepaard ging met enorme infrastructuurwerken, vormde een 46,5 km lange tolvrije uitweg naar zee die eindigde in de overslaghaven Damme. Dat slechts de helft van het kanaal binnen de Gentse Oudburg lag en de andere helft buiten haar invloedssfeer, in het Brugse Vrije, doet vermoeden dat ook politieke motieven een rol speelden bij de aanleg. In het huidige landschap zijn de jaagpaden en een deel van de Lievebermen nog zichtbare en unieke getuigen van dit middeleeuwse kanaal. Minder bekend is het Collegium Veteranorum, oorspronkelijk gebouwd als het oudste jezuïetencollege in de voormalige Nederlanden. Dieter Nuytten beschrijft de woelige gebruiksgeschiedenis van de gebouwen, met talrijke afbraken en verbouwingen, tot aan de huidige restauratie en (alweer) herbestemming van de gebouwenvleugels van het Collegium Veteranorum, het enige overblijfsel van een eertijds veel groter complex. Vooral de constructieve elementen zoals voor- en achtergevels en enkele latere interieurelementen kregen tijdens deze restauratiecampagne hun noodzakelijke herwaardering.Edith Willekens Eclectische monumenten op papier vereeuwigd: de publicatie Parallèle des maisons de Bruxelles van Auguste Castermans. [Eclectic paper monuments perpetuated: the publication Parallèle des maisons de Bruxelles by Auguste Castermans.]De Luikse architect Auguste Castermans publiceerde in het midden van de 19de eeuw een platenalbum met voorbeelden van eclectische architectuur, bedoeld als inspiratiebron voor ontwerpers en opdrachtgevers, die de platen onderling konden vergelijken. Omdat deze publicatie nooit eerder uitvoerig onderzocht werd, nam Edith Willekens deze taak op zich en kon ze aantonen dat de Parrallèle des maisons de Bruxelles et des principales villes de la Belgique niet minder dan Castermans levenswerk was, zijn persoonlijk pleidooi voor het gebruik van deze eclectische bouwstijl in een periode van voortschrijdende commercialisering.Summar

SNP association study in PMS2-associated Lynch syndrome

Lynch syndrome (LS) patients are at high risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC). Phenotypic variability might in part be explained by common susceptibility loci identified in Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS). Previous studies focused mostly on MLH1, MSH2 and MSH6 carriers, with conflicting results. We aimed to determine the role of GWAS SNPs in PMS2 mutation carriers. A cohort study was performed in 507 PMS2 carriers (124 CRC cases), genotyped for 24 GWAS SNPs, including SNPs at 11q23.1 and 8q23.3. Hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated using a weighted Cox regression analysis to correct for ascertainment bias. Discrimination was assessed with a concordance statistic in a bootstrap cross-validation procedure. Individual SNPs only had non-significant associations with CRC occurrence with HRs lower than 2, although male carriers of allele A at rs1321311 (6p21.31) may have increased risk of CRC (HR = 2.1, 95% CI 1.2–3.0). A polygenic risk score (PRS) based on 24 HRs had an HR of 2.6 (95% CI 1.5–4.6) for the highest compared to the lowest quartile, but had no discriminative ability (c statistic 0.52). Previously suggested SNPs do not modify CRC risk in PMS2 carriers. Future large studies are needed for improved risk stratification among Lynch syndrome patients

The Quest for the Early Modern Bible Reader: The Dutch Vorsterman Bible (1533–1534), its Readers and Users

This article investigates a book-archeological approach to early modern Bible reading that maps the complex interactions between the substantive elements of a book (text, paratext, illustrations) on the one hand, and its historical readers and the traces they left on the other. That method is applied to all 43 extant copies of the Dutch Vorsterman Bible of 1533–1534. The editions printed by Willem Vorsterman were for a long time regarded as Protestant. However, the Bibles had the approval of the secular and ecclesiastic authorities and were intended for a Catholic public. The edition of 1533–1534 is a glossed Bible with many historicizing, chronological, linguistic and typological paratextual elements. The former owners of the 43 Bibles and their confessional background are examined. Intended and unintended traces of use give clues to the actual use of the Bible.
