    On-Chip Phase-Shift Induced Control of Supercontinuum Generation in a Dual-Core Si3\mathbf{_{3}}N4\mathbf{_{4}} Waveguide

    We investigate on-chip spectral control of supercontinuum generation, taking advantage of the additional spatial degree of freedom in strongly-coupled dual-core waveguides. Using numerical integration of the multi-mode generalized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, we show that, with proper waveguide cross-section design, selective excitation of supermodes can vary the dispersion to its extremes, i.e., all-normal or anomalous dispersion can be selected via phase shifting in a Mach-Zehnder input circuit. The resulting control allows to provide vastly different supercontinuum spectra with the same waveguide circuit

    A cluster randomized trial to improve adherence to evidence-based guidelines on diabetes and reduce clinical inertia in primary care physicians in Belgium: study protocol [NTR 1369]

    Contains fulltext : 70617.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Most quality improvement programs in diabetes care incorporate aspects of clinician education, performance feedback, patient education, care management, and diabetes care teams to support primary care physicians. Few studies have applied all of these dimensions to address clinical inertia. AIM: To evaluate interventions to improve adherence to evidence-based guidelines for diabetes and reduce clinical inertia in primary care physicians. DESIGN: Two-arm cluster randomized controlled trial. PARTICIPANTS: Primary care physicians in Belgium. INTERVENTIONS: Primary care physicians will be randomly allocated to 'Usual' (UQIP) or 'Advanced' (AQIP) Quality Improvement Programs. Physicians in the UQIP will receive interventions addressing the main physician, patient, and office system factors that contribute to clinical inertia. Physicians in the AQIP will receive additional interventions that focus on sustainable behavior changes in patients and providers. OUTCOMES: Primary endpoints are the proportions of patients within targets for three clinical outcomes: 1) glycosylated hemoglobin < 7%; 2) systolic blood pressure differences </=130 mmHg; and 3) low density lipoprotein/cholesterol < 100 mg/dl. Secondary endpoints are individual improvements in 12 validated parameters: glycosylated hemoglobin, low and high density lipoprotein/cholesterol, total cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, weight, physical exercise, healthy diet, smoking status, and statin and anti-platelet therapy. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY ANALYSIS: Statistical analyses will be performed using an intent-to-treat approach with a multilevel model. Linear and generalized linear mixed models will be used to account for the clustered nature of the data, i.e., patients clustered withinimary care physicians, and repeated assessments clustered within patients. To compare patient characteristics at baseline and between the intervention arms, the generalized estimating equations (GEE) approach will be used, taking the clustered nature of the data within physicians into account. We will also use the GEE approach to test for differences in evolution of the primary and secondary endpoints for all patients, and for patients in the two interventions arms, accounting for within-patient clustering.     Superquadrics with rational and irrational symmetry

    Superquadrics are important models for part level-description in computer graphics and computer vision. Their power resides in their compact characterization. To further extend the representational power of superquadrics several methods have been proposed for local and global deformations. This notwithstanding, it is very difficult, for example, to represent polygons or polyhedrons using classical superquadrics. In this paper we present a new approach to model natural and abstract shapes for computer graphics, using a Generalized Superellipse Equation, which solves the problem of symmetries. Our approach provides an elegant analytical way to fold or unfold the coordinate axis systems like a fan, thereby generalizing superquadrics and superellipses (and hyperspheres in general) to supershapes for any symmetry, rational or irrational. Very compact representations of various shapes with different symmetries are possible and this provides opportunities for CAD at the level of graphics kernels, CAD-users and their clients. For example, parts and assemblies can be represented in very small file sizes allowing to use the 3-D solid model throughout the design and manufacturing process. Our approach presents an elegant way to use 3-D models both for solid modeling and boundary representations, for rigid as well as soft models

    Evaluation of the effects of low energetic microwave irradiation on anaerobic digestion

    The present study investigates the effects of microwave irradiation on the performance of anaerobic digestion processes. A first set of experiments is performed to distinguish the upper limit of the applied energy levels. Secondly, the effects of these treatments on the performance of the digestion process are evaluated in 3 experimental setups: (i) monitoring the acetic acid degradation, (ii) performing a biological methane potential (BMP) assay and (iii) conducting a specific methanogenic activity (SMA) test. The solubilisation experiment reveals a limited degree of disintegration of anaerobic biomass up to a microwave treatment of 10000 kJ/kg TS. Above this threshold value the soluble COD level started to rise, with up to 350% at 30000 kJ/kg TS regardless of the microwave output power. Because solubilisation of the biomass increases the easily degradable content, this would lead to false observations regarding increased activity. Therefore, solubilisation is minimized by limiting the microwave treatment to a maximum of 6000 kJ/kg TS during the second part of the experiments. Monitoring the degradation of acetic acid after a low intensity microwave treatment, reveals that microwave irradiation shortens the lag phase, e.g., from 21 to 3 h after a microwave treatment of 1000 kJ/kg TS at 100 W. However most treatments also result in a decrease of the maximum degradation and of the degradation rate of acetic acid. BMP assays are performed to evaluate the activity and performance of the entire anaerobic community. Every treatment results in a decreased biogas production potential and decreased biogas production rate. Moreover, each treatment induced an increase of the lag phase. The SMA experiments show no influence of the microwave irradiation in terms of biogas or methane production.     Implementation of a Care Pathway for Primary Palliative Care in 5 research clusters in Belgium : quasi-experimental study protocol and innovations in data collection (pro-SPINOZA)

    BACKGROUND: Starting with early identification of palliative care patients by general practitioners (GPs), the Care Pathway for Primary Palliative Care (CPPPC) is believed to help primary health care workers to deliver patient- and family-centered care in the last year of life. The care pathway has been pilot-tested, and will now be implemented in 5 Belgian regions: 2 Dutch-speaking regions, 2 French-speaking regions and the bilingual capital region of Brussels. The overall aim of the CPPPC is to provide better quality of primary palliative care, and in the end to reduce the hospital death rate. The aim of this article is to describe the quantitative design and innovative data collection strategy used in the evaluation of this complex intervention. METHODS/DESIGN: A quasi-experimental stepped wedge cluster design is set up with the 5 regions being 5 non-randomized clusters. The primary outcome is reduced hospital death rate per GPs’ patient population. Secondary outcomes are increased death at home and health care consumption patterns suggesting high quality palliative care. Per research cluster, GPs will be recruited via convenience sampling. These GPs -volunteering to be involved will recruit people with reduced life expectancy and their informal care givers. Health care consumption data in the last year of life, available for all deceased people having lived in the research clusters in the study period, will be used for comparison between patient populations of participating GPs and patient populations of non-participating GPs. Description of baseline characteristics of participating GPs and patients and monitoring of the level of involvement by GPs, patients and informal care givers will happen through regular, privacy-secured web-surveys. Web-survey data and health consumption data are linked in a secure way, respecting Belgian privacy laws. DISCUSSION: To evaluate this complex intervention, a quasi-experimental stepped wedge cluster design has been set up. Context characteristics and involvement level of participants are important parameters in evaluating complex interventions. It is possible to securely link survey data with health consumption data. By appealing to IT solutions we hope to be able to partly reduce respondent burden, a known problem in palliative care research. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02266069

    Influence of the oxidation state of SrTiO 3

    By applying two-dimensional laser induced fluorescence (LIF) on multiple plasma constituents, we are able to directly link the oxidation of plasma species in a SrTiO3 plasma for pulsed laser deposition to the stoichiometry and quality of the thin films grown. With spatiotemporal LIF mapping of the plasma species in different background gas compositions, we find that Ti and Sr have to be fully oxidized for a stoichiometric growth of crystalline thin films, which gives new input for modeling surface growth, as well as provides additional control over the exact degree of stoichiometry of thin films
