Ils sont généralement considérés comme des auxiliaires discrets et fidèles au service du pouvoir, comme les indications du tableau de bord et des dispositifs de commande d'un pilote d'avion. Ceci est cohérent avec la vision selon laquelle la conduite des organisations est essentiellement affaire de volontés. La présente recherche montre, qu'au contraire, les instruments de gestion sont souvent des éléments décisifs de la structuration du réel, engendrant des choix et des comportements échappant aux prises des hommes, parfois à leur conscience. On étudie alors plusieurs dimensions de leur rôle : réduction de la complexité, mise en place d'automatismes de décision, division de la vigilance, régulation des rapports sociaux et maintien de la cohérence; sur chacune de ces dimensions ils font des arbitrages plus ou moins pertinents, plus ou moins bien assumés et ceci explique les crises qui agitent périodiquement les organisations. En première approximation, c'est l'intendance qui commande et non les volontés ; cela ne nie pas la possibilité de tout changement conscient mais il convient alors de s'intéresser aux procédures et aux outils mis en oeuvre plutôt qu'aux intentions affichées ou à l'exercice du pouvoir visible. Cette analyse conduit à l'idée que, face aux mutations techniques et autres et à la mobilité du monde actuel, il est urgent de revoir nos modes traditionnels d'exercice du pouvoir

Uniform WKB approximation of Coulomb wave functions for arbitrary partial wave

Coulomb wave functions are difficult to compute numerically for extremely low energies, even with direct numerical integration. Hence, it is more convenient to use asymptotic formulas in this region. It is the object of this paper to derive analytical asymptotic formulas valid for arbitrary energies and partial waves. New aesthetic, new anxieties

The New Aesthetic was a design concept and netculture phenomenon launched into the world by London designer James Bridle in 2011. It continues to attract the attention of media art, and throw up associations to a variety of situated practices, including speculative design, net criticism, hacking, free and open source software development, locative media, sustainable hardware and so on. In this book we consider the New Aesthetic: as an opportunity to rethink the relations between these contexts in the emergent episteme of computationality. There is a desperate need to confront the political pressures of neoliberalism manifested in these infrastructures. Indeed, these are risky, dangerous and problematic times; a period when critique should thrive. But here we need to forge new alliances, invent and discover problems of the common that nevertheless do not eliminate the fundamental differences in this ecology of practices. In this book, perhaps provocatively, we believe a great deal could be learned from the development of the New Aesthetic not only as a mood, but as a topic and fix for collective feeling, that temporarily mobilizes networks. Is it possible to sustain and capture these atmospheres of debate and discussion beyond knee-jerk reactions and opportunistic self-promotion? These are crucial questions that the New Aesthetic invites us to consider, if only to keep a critical network culture in place

Multimorbidity due to novel pathogenic variants in the WFS1/RP1/NOD2 genes: autosomal dominant congenital lamellar cataract, retinitis pigmentosa and Crohn’s disease in a British family

Background: A five generation family has been analysed by whole exome sequencing (WES) for genetic associations with the multimorbidities of congenital cataract (CC), retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and Crohn’s disease (CD). // Methods: WES was performed for unaffected and affected individuals within the family pedigree followed by bioinformatic analyses of these data to identify disease-causing variants with damaging pathogenicity scores. // Results: A novel pathogenic missense variant in WFS1: c.1897G>C; p.V633L, a novel pathogenic nonsense variant in RP1: c.6344T>G; p.L2115* and a predicted pathogenic missense variant in NOD2: c.2104C>T; p.R702W are reported. The three variants cosegregated with the phenotypic combinations of autosomal dominant CC, RP and CD within individual family members. // Conclusions: Here, we report multimorbidity in a family pedigree listed on a CC register, which broadens the spectrum of potential cataract associated genes to include both RP1 and NOD2

Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy in a Squash Player

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is usually described following acute emotional stress. We report here the case of a 48-year-old woman admitted for acute coronary syndrome after an intensive squash match. Diagnosis of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy due to acute physical stress was suspected in presence of normal coronary arteries and transitory left ventricular dysfunction with typical apical ballooning. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging confirmed regional wall-motion abnormalities and was helpful in excluding myocardial infarction diagnosis. During squash the body is subject to sudden and vigorous demands inducing a prolonged and severe workload on the myocardium

Remote Radio Control of Insect Flight

We demonstrated the remote control of insects in free flight via an implantable radio-equipped miniature neural stimulating system. The pronotum mounted system consisted of neural stimulators, muscular stimulators, a radio transceiver-equipped microcontroller and a microbattery. Flight initiation, cessation and elevation control were accomplished through neural stimulus of the brain which elicited, suppressed or modulated wing oscillation. Turns were triggered through the direct muscular stimulus of either of the basalar muscles. We characterized the response times, success rates, and free-flight trajectories elicited by our neural control systems in remotely controlled beetles. We believe this type of technology will open the door to in-flight perturbation and recording of insect flight responses
