\u3ci\u3eThe Fabulous Journeys of Alice and Pinocchio: Exploring Their Parallel Worlds\u3c/i\u3e by Laura Tosi with Peter Hunt

    Get PDF
Tosi is frank concerning the challenges presented to “say something new” about the tales of Alice and Pinocchio, yet while there has been much separate study and criticism on the subjects of these iconic children’s characters, there has been no scholarly study of each text through the lens of the other (Tosi 1). Tosi discusses the impact of the Alice books and Pinocchio on a broader, global audience by introducing an idea put forth by Italian novelist Italo Calvino, namely that “classics are those books which come to us bearing the aura of previous interpretation and trailing behind them the traces they have left in the culture or cultures (or just in the languages and customs) through which they have passed” (qtd. in Tosi, 1). Calvino’s words sum up the aims of Tosi’s The Fabulous Journeys of Alice and Pinocchio, and challenge her to present compelling proof that these tales are indeed classics, fashioned by the language, culture and history of their native soils

\u3ci\u3eThe Pleasures of Metamorphosis: Japanese and English Fairy Tale Transformations of The Little Mermaid \u3c/i\u3e by Lucy Fraser

Lucy Fraser employs her vast knowledge of Japanese and English literature and pop culture to present an intertextural and cross-cultural analysis in her book The Pleasures of Metamorphosis: Japanese and English Fairy Tale Transformations of “The Little Mermaid.” Fraser accomplishes this daunting task by approaching the various English and Japanese interpretations that adapt and subvert Andersen’s fairy tale not only through transcultural parallel readings, but through the framework of pleasure, which Fraser argues can “bring together texts that might otherwise be separated by differences in language, background, time period, genre, and medium and by the borders of ‘high’ and ‘low’ cultural forms” (1). In reading pleasure as a framework, the audience is invited to consider not only the author’s depictions of pleasure as experienced by the characters, but also the “metatextual messages about the pleasures of fairy tales and fairy tale transformations,” thus creating an avenue for questioning how these pleasures were originally intended and how they are consumed by readers (2). By analyzing Japan’s many iterations of “The Little Mermaid,” ranging from literature, art, and film, through the lens of pleasure and shƍjo, Japanese girl culture, Fraser examines “the journey of Andersen’s Danish fairy tale into English and Japanese, believing that such a cross-cultural approach contributes a more global outlook to the field of Anglophone fairy tale studies” (184)

Nine Tolkien Scholars Respond to Charles W. Mills’s “The Wretched of Middle-Earth: An Orkish Manifesto”

In spite of being written over three decades ago, Mills’s posthumously published “Manifesto” not only anticipates but transcends the majority, if not the totality, of the scholarship on Tolkien, race, and racisms which has been published since 2003. Scholars in philosophy and related fields familiar with Mills’s work will recognize that the essay was a “critical exploration of [how] a fictional racial hierarchy strikingly illuminates the ongoing influence of certain old racist ideas on our present day [sic] social realities.” Reid has invited a wide-ranging Tolkienists who have read the essay to respond, briefly, on the significance of the essay to their wor

Influence of fluid dynamic conditions on 1,3-propanediol production from glycerol by Shimwellia blattae: Carbon flux and cell response

The fluid dynamic conditions play a key role in the development and scaling up of bioprocesses. In aerobic cultures, oxygen is an essential substrate for microbial growth, production and culture maintenance; an effective gas-liquid transfer must be achieved. Changes in fluid dynamics due to stirrer speed can affect negatively to the culture, causing hydrodynamic stress (increasing shear stress) or oxidative stress (by an increase of available oxygen in the liquid phase)

Demographic, socioeconomic, and health correlates of unmet need for mental health treatment in the United States, 2002–16: evidence from the national surveys on drug use and health

Abstract: Background: Unmet need for mental health services remains high in the United States and is disproportionately concentrated in some groups. The scale and nature of these disparities have not been fully elucidated and bear further scrutiny. As such, in this study, we examine the demographic, socioeconomic, and health correlates of unmet need for mental health treatment as well as the reasons for unmet need. Methods: We draw upon the National Survey for Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) from 2002 to 16 for adults aged 18 and over in the United States (n = 579,017). Using multivariable logistic regression, we simultaneously model the demographic, socioeconomic, and health correlates of unmet need for mental health treatment from 2002 to 16. We also analyse the reasons for unmet need expressed by these populations, reasons which include cost, perceived stigma, minimisation of symptoms, low perceived effectiveness of treatment, and structural barriers. Results: Major characteristics associated with increased odds of unmet need include past year substance abuse or dependence (other than hallucinogens and sedatives), fair, poor, or very poor health, being female, and an educational attainment of college or higher. With respect to reasons for unmet need, cost was most often cited, followed by perceived stigma, structural barriers, and minimisation. Characteristics associated with increased odds of indicating cost as a reason for unmet need include: being uninsured or aged 26–35. Minimisation and low perceived effectiveness are mentioned by high-income persons as reasons for unmet need. College-educated persons and women had higher odds of citing structural barriers as a reason for unmet need. Conclusions: The correlates and causes of unmet need highlight the intersectionality of individual health needs with implications on addressing inequities in mental health policy and practice

    Morte di Zarathustra

Artistic work is often born through a thought, the deepening and the study of themes, which are the fundamental principles of art, being used and becoming subjects of a different work, parallel to that of the creative one.

Those engaged in theatre encounter the “play” primarily as an aesthetic category inherent in the processes that characterise the act of the play.  But with further development of these practices, the potential knowledge of the play also emerges, as human condition with a deep awareness of oneself.  Through a path that passes through Breton, Plato, Huizinga, and Alessandro Fersen, an interpretation of the “play” is proposed here as a fundamental part of art and knowledge
