Exclusive Dealing
In this paper, we provide a conceptual framework for understanding the phenomenon of exclusive dealing, and we explore the motivations for and effects of its use. For a broad class of models, we characterize the outcome of a contracting game in which manufacturers may employ exclusive dealing provisions in their contracts. We then apply this characterization to a sequence of specialized settings. We demonstrate that exclusionary contractual provisions may be irrelevant, anticompetitive, or efficiency-enhancing, depending upon the setting. More specifically, we exhibit the potential for anticompetitive effects in non-coincident markets (that is, markets other than the ones in which exclusive dealing is practiced), and we explore the potential for the enhancement of efficiency in a setting where common representation gives rise to incentive conflicts. In each instance, we describe the manner in which equilibrium outcomes would be altered by a ban on exclusive dealing. We demonstrate that a ban may have surprisingly subtle and unintended effects.
Buffer-gas induced absorption resonances in Rb vapor
We observe transformation of the electromagnetically induced transparency
(EIT) resonance into the absorption resonance in a interaction
configuration in a cell filled with Rb and a buffer gas. This
transformation occurs as a one-photon detuning of the coupling fields is varied
from the atomic transition. No such absorption resonance is found in the
absence of a buffer gas. The width of the absorption resonance is several times
smaller than the width of the EIT resonance, and the changes of absorption near
these resonances are about the same. Similar absorption resonances are detected

Reinstated episodic context guides sampling-based decisions for reward.
How does experience inform decisions? In episodic sampling, decisions are guided by a few episodic memories of past choices. This process can yield choice patterns similar to model-free reinforcement learning; however, samples can vary from trial to trial, causing decisions to vary. Here we show that context retrieved during episodic sampling can cause choice behavior to deviate sharply from the predictions of reinforcement learning. Specifically, we show that, when a given memory is sampled, choices (in the present) are influenced by the properties of other decisions made in the same context as the sampled event. This effect is mediated by fMRI measures of context retrieval on each trial, suggesting a mechanism whereby cues trigger retrieval of context, which then triggers retrieval of other decisions from that context. This result establishes a new avenue by which experience can guide choice and, as such, has broad implications for the study of decisions
Theory of nuclear spin conversion in ethylene
First theoretical analysis of the nuclear spin conversion in ethylene
molecules (13^CCH4) has been performed. The conversion rate was found equal
approx. 3x10^{-4} 1/s*Torr, which is in qualitative agreement with the recently
obtained experimental value. It was shown that the ortho-para mixing in 13^CCH4
is dominated by the spin-rotation coupling. Mixing of only two pairs of
ortho-para levels were found to contribute significantly to the spin

Viable tax constitutions
Taxation is only sustainable if the general public complies with it. This observation is uncontroversial with tax practitioners but has been ignored by the public finance tradition, which has interpreted tax constitutions as binding contracts by which the power to tax is irretrievably conferred by individuals to government, which can then levy any tax it chooses. However, in the absence of an outside party enforcing contracts between members of a group, no arrangement within groups can be considered to be a binding contract, and therefore the power of tax must be sanctioned by individuals on an ongoing basis. In this paper we offer, for the first time, a theoretical analysis of this fundamental compliance problem associated with taxation, obtaining predictions that in some cases point to a re-interptretation of the theoretical constructions of the public finance tradition while in others call them into question
Optimality and distortionary lobbying: regulating tobacco consumption
We examine policies directed at regulating tobacco consumption through three types of instruments: (i) an excise tax hindering consumption by increasing the price of cigarettes, (ii) prevention programs helping consumers to make choices that are more time consistent when trading-off the current pleasure from smoking and its future health harms, and (iii) smoking bans directly restricting consumption. First, on normative grounds, we focus on the optimal design of public policies maximizing the economy’s surplus. Second, in a positive perspective, we investigate how the lobbying activities of the tobacco industry, of smokers, and of anti-tobacco organizations may distort government intervention

Resonances in the magnetic decoupling curves for the spin relaxation of dense
alkali-metal vapors prove that much of the relaxation is due to the spin-axis
interaction in triplet dimers. Initial estimates of the spin-axis coupling
