The renewable energy targets of the Maghreb countries: Impact on electricity supply and conventional power markets
Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, the three countries of the North African Maghreb region, are showing increased efforts to integrate renewable electricity into their power markets. Like many other countries, they have pronounced renewable energy targets, defining future shares of “green” electricity in their national generation mixes. The individual national targets are relatively varied, reflecting the different availability of renewable resources in each country, but also the different political ambitions for renewable electricity in the Maghreb states. Open questions remain regarding the targets’ economic impact on the power markets. Our article addresses this issue by applying a linear electricity market optimization model to the North African countries. Assuming a competitive, regional electricity market in the Maghreb, the model minimizes dispatch and investment costs and simulates the impact of the renewable energy targets on the conventional generation system until 2025. Efficient HTS DC- Cable for Power Distribution in Hybrid-Electric Aircraft
With respect to a substantial reduction of greenhouse gas emission, noise reduction and combustible consumption in aircraft an increasing interest in hybrid-electric propulsion systems has emerged in the last years. In the frame of a German research project we actually develop a HTS superconducting busbar system for DC currents able to join the different components as generator, motors and battery systems on the plane.
Main features of this busbar system are large currents at moderate voltages and in particular low ohmic contacts, including T-type, Y-type and cross connections between system segments, this with a minimization of outer dimensions and weight. The two-pole cable consists of two stacks of REBCO tapes. Compensation of Lorentz forces between the two poles, compensation of thermal length changes and sufficient electric insulation are the major challenges. We will present details of the cable design and first test results on a lab-scale cable demonstrator
Siponimod Inhibits the Formation of Meningeal Ectopic Lymphoid Tissue in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis
Background and ObjectivesTo investigate whether the formation or retention of meningeal ectopic lymphoid tissue (mELT) can be inhibited by the sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor 1,5 modulator siponimod (BAF312) in a murine model of multiple sclerosis (MS).MethodsA murine spontaneous chronic experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model, featuring meningeal inflammatory infiltrates resembling those in MS, was used. To prevent or treat EAE, siponimod was administered daily starting either before EAE onset or at peak of disease. The extent and cellular composition of mELT, the spinal cord parenchyma, and the spleen was assessed by histology and immunohistochemistry.ResultsSiponimod, when applied before disease onset, ameliorated EAE. This effect was also present, although less prominent, when treatment started at peak of disease. Treatment with siponimod resulted in a strong reduction of the extent of mELT in both treatment paradigms. Both B and T cells were diminished in the meningeal compartment.DiscussionBeneficial effects on the disease course correlated with a reduction in mELT, suggesting that inhibition of mELT may be an additional mechanism of action of siponimod in the treatment of EAE. Further studies are needed to establish causality and confirm this observation in MS
Anti-CD20 Depletes Meningeal B Cells but Does Not Halt the Formation of Meningeal Ectopic Lymphoid Tissue
Objective To investigate whether anti-CD20 B-cell-depleting monoclonal antibodies (alphaCD20 mAbs) inhibit the formation or retention of meningeal ectopic lymphoid tissue (mELT) in a murine model of multiple sclerosis (MS). Methods We used a spontaneous chronic experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model of mice with mutant T-cell and B-cell receptors specific for myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG), which develop meningeal inflammatory infiltrates resembling those described in MS. alphaCD20 mAbs were administered in either a preventive or a treatment regimen. The extent and cellular composition of mELT was assessed by histology and immunohistochemistry. Results alphaCD20 mAb, applied in a paradigm to either prevent or treat EAE, did not alter the disease course in either condition. However, alphaCD20 mAb depleted virtually all B cells from the meningeal compartment but failed to prevent the formation of mELT altogether. Because of the absence of B cells, mELT was less densely populated with immune cells and the cellular composition was changed, with increased neutrophil granulocytes. Conclusions These results demonstrate that, in CNS autoimmune disease, meningeal inflammatory infiltrates may form and persist in the absence of B cells. Together with the finding that alphaCD20 mAb does not ameliorate spontaneous chronic EAE with mELT, our data suggest that mELT may have yet unknown capacities that are independent of B cells and contribute to CNS autoimmunity
A Critical Role of Platelet Adhesion in the Initiation of Atherosclerotic Lesion Formation
The contribution of platelets to the process of atherosclerosis remains unclear. Here, we show in vivo that platelets adhere to the vascular endothelium of the carotid artery in ApoE−/− mice before the development of manifest atherosclerotic lesions. Platelet–endothelial cell interaction involved both platelet glycoprotein (GP)Ibα and GPIIb-IIIa. Platelet adhesion to the endothelium coincides with inflammatory gene expression and preceded atherosclerotic plaque invasion by leukocytes. Prolonged blockade of platelet adhesion in ApoE−/− mice profoundly reduced leukocyte accumulation in the arterial intima and attenuated atherosclerotic lesion formation in the carotid artery bifurcation, the aortic sinus, and the coronary arteries. These findings establish the platelet as a major player in initiation of the atherogenetic process
Adoptive Transfer of Human Gingiva-derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Ameliorates Collagen-induced Arthritis via Suppression of Th1 and Th17 Cells and Enhancement of Regulatory T Cell Differentiation
Objective Current approaches offer no cures for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Accumulating evidence has revealed that manipulation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) may have the potential to control or even prevent RA, but BM-MSC-based therapy faces many challenges, such as limited cell availability and reduced clinical feasibility. This study in mice with established collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) was undertaken to determine whether substitution of human gingiva-derived mesenchymal stem cells (G-MSCs) would significantly improve the therapeutic effects. Methods CIA was induced in DBA/1J mice by immunization with type II collagen and Freund\u27s complete adjuvant. G-MSCs were injected intravenously into the mice on day 14 after immunization. In some experiments, intraperitoneal injection of PC61 (anti-CD25 antibody) was used to deplete Treg cells in arthritic mice. Results Infusion of G-MSCs in DBA/1J mice with CIA significantly reduced the severity of arthritis, decreased the histopathology scores, and down-regulated the production of inflammatory cytokines (interferon-γ and interleukin-17A). Infusion of G-MSCs also resulted in increased levels of CD4+CD39+FoxP3+ cells in arthritic mice. These increases were noted early after infusion in the spleens and lymph nodes, and later after infusion in the synovial fluid. The FoxP3+ Treg cells that were increased in frequency mainly consisted of Helios-negative cells. When Treg cells were depleted, infusion of G-MSCs partially interfered with the progression of CIA. Pretreatment of G-MSCs with a CD39 or CD73 inhibitor significantly reversed the protective effect of G-MSCs on CIA. Conclusion The role of G-MSCs in controlling the development and severity of CIA mostly depends on CD39/CD73 signals and partially depends on the induction of CD4+CD39+FoxP3+ Treg cells. Comparing and Evaluating Real Time Character Engines for Virtual Environments
As animated characters increasingly become vital parts of virtual environments, then the engines that drive these characters increasingly become vital parts of virtual environment software. This paper gives an overview of the state of the art in character engines, and proposes a taxonomy of the features that are commonly found in them. This taxonomy can be used as a tool for comparison and evaluation of different engines. In order to demonstrate this we use it to compare three engines. The first is Cal3D, the most commonly used open source engine. We also introduce two engines created by the authors, Piavca and HALCA.
