We show that one-dimensional electron systems in proximity of a
superconductor that support Majorana edge states are extremely susceptible to
electron-electron interactions. Strong interactions generically destroy the
induced superconducting gap that stabilizes the Majorana edge states. For weak
interactions, the renormalization of the gap is nonuniversal and allows for a
regime, in which the Majorana edge states persist. We present strategies how
this regime can be reached.Comment: 4.2 page, 1 figur
Both Germany and the United States of America have a long tradition of science and medical excellence reaching back as far as the nineteenth century. The same tribute must be paid to the medical educational system in both countries. Despite significant initial similarities and cross-inspiration, the paths from enrolling in a medical university to graduating as a medical doctor in Germany and the US seem to have become much different. To fill a void in literature, the authors' objective therefore is to delineate both structures of medical education in an up-to-date review and examine their current differences and similarities. Recent medical publications, legal guidelines of governmental or official organizations, articles in media, as well as the authors' personal experiences are used as sources of this report.Tuition loans of over 200,000arenotuncommonforstudentsintheUSaftergraduatingfrommedicalschools,whichareoftenprivateinstitutions.InGermany,however,thevastmajorityofmedicaluniversitiesaretax−fundedand,forthisreason,freeoftuition.Significantdifferencesandsurprisinglymultiplesimilaritiesexistbetweenthesetwosystems,despiteonedependingongovernmentandtheotheronprivateorganizations.Germanycurrentlyemploysanintegratedmedicalcurriculumthattypicallybeginsrightafterhighschoolandconsistsofa2−yearlongpre−clinicalsegmentteachingbasicsciencesanda4−yearclinicalsegmentleadingmedicalstudentstothepracticalaspectsofmedicine.Ontheotherhand,theUSeducationisatwo−stageprocess.AftersuccessfulcompletionofaBachelor′sdegreeincollege,anAmericanstudentgoesthrougha4−yearmedicalprogramencompassing2yearsofbasicscienceand2yearsofclinicaltraining.Inthisreview,wewilladdresssomeofthesesimilaritiesandmajordifferences.DeutschlandunddieVereinigtenStaatenvonAmerikahabenbeideeinelangeTraditionderNaturwissenschaftundmedizinischenExzellenz,diebisweitindasneunzehnteJahrhundertzuru¨ckreicht.DengleichenTributmussmandenmedizinischenAusbildungssystemenbeiderLa¨nderzollen.TrotzzuBeginnbedeutsamerA¨hnlichkeitenundgewisserQuerinspirationscheinensichdieWegevonderImmatrikulationaneinermedizinischenFakulta¨tbiszumStudienabschlussalsArztinDeutschlandunddenUSAgetrenntzuhaben.UmeineLu¨ckeinderFachliteraturzuschließen,istdasZielderAutoren,diebeidenStrukturendermedizinischenAusbildungmittelseineraktuellenU¨bersichtsschriftdarzustellenundderenUnterschiedeundGemeinsamkeitenzuuntersuchen.DieneustenmedizinischenPublikationen,verbindlicheRichtlinienvonamtlichenoderoffiziellenOrganisationen,ArtikelinderPresse,aberauchdieperso¨nlichenErfahrungenderAutorendienenalsQuellenfu¨rdieseArbeit.
This paper investigates the impact of introducing index futures trading on the volatility of the underlying stock market. We exploit a unique institutional setting in which presumably uninformed individuals are the dominant trader type in the futures markets. This enables us to investigate the destabilization hypothesis more accurately than previous studies do and to provide evidence for or against the in
uence of individuals trading in index futures on spot market volatility. To overcome econometric shortcomings of the existing literature we employ a Markov-switching-GARCH approach to endogenously identify distinct volatility regimes. Our empirical evidence for Poland surprisingly suggests that the introduction of index futures trading does not destabilize the spot market. This nding is robust across 3 stock market indices and is corroborated by further analysis of a control group.Individual Investors, Uninformed Trading, Stock Index Futures, Emerging Capital Markets, Stock Market Volatility, Markov-Switching-GARCH Model
