Me' winik: Discovery of the biomedical equivalence for a Maya ethnomedical syndrome

Investigation of the correspondence of ethnomedical illness syndromes and biomedical disease classification has led to the identification of a high prevalence of gallbaldder disease among the Tzeltal and Tzotzil Maya populations of Highland Chiapas. This condition, known to demonstrate exceptionally high rates among North American Indians, has not previously been described among the Highland Maya. The failure to recognize this serious health problem has been due primarily to gultural differences in understanding the anatomy and difficulties arising from communication of symptomatology. The Skeleton Safety Report in compliance with SEVESO II Directive was prepared between March 1998 and December 1998. A safety report has been worked out of three selected installations with high hazardous impact. It was based on detailed notes of two briefing seminars held at a big Ukrainian chemical industry complex. The safety report is only available in Russian. Measures were recommended to increase safety of installations. The Skeleton Safety Report represents an abridged and anonymous version of the safety report with additional instructions on methods. The Skeleton Safety Report contains recommendations on safety management systems, general description of location and installations, technical design and processing of selected installations, hazard identification and risk assessment, measures to prevent and mitigate hazardous incidents. Short-, medium- and long-term measures are named to eliminate deficits. A catalogue of demands has been compiled on safety equipment and measures for the selected installations. The project imparts methods to increase safety of installations and general recommendations on preparation of an Ukrainian legislation on safety of installations. It was supervised by a team of representatives of German and Ukrainian ministries and authorities, of UN/ECE and of German and Ukrainian chemcial industry. Experiences were gathered by preparing a safety report in compliance with SEVESO II Directive. This job was carried out by a German-Ukrainian team. Workshops were held to transfer know-how, among them a trip to a German chemical industry enterprise. Following documents were prepared in scope of the project: Report on Safety Requirement Stocktaking, Realisation of a Safety Requirement Stocktaking. Guidelines (49 pages, 14 examples, 23 recording forms for safety requirement stocktaking), Safety Report (only available in Russian), Skeleton Safety Report, Catalogue of Demands on Production, Storage and Loading of Ammonia.
