    Magnetic Field-Induced Condensation of Triplons in Han Purple Pigment BaCuSi2_2O6_6

    Besides being an ancient pigment, BaCuSi2_2O6_6 is a quasi-2D magnetic insulator with a gapped spin dimer ground state. The application of strong magnetic fields closes this gap creating a gas of bosonic spin triplet excitations called triplons. The topology of the spin lattice makes BaCuSi2_2O6_6 an ideal candidate for studying the Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons as a function of the external magnetic field, which acts as a chemical potential. In agreement with quantum Monte Carlo numerical simulations, we observe a distinct lambda-anomaly in the specific heat together with a maximum in the magnetic susceptibility upon cooling down to liquid Helium temperatures.Comment: published on August 20, 200

    NF-ΞΊB-mediated effects on behavior and cartilage pathology in a non-invasive loading model of post-traumatic osteoarthritis

    OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the temporal activation of NF-ΞΊB and its relationship to the development of pain-related sensitivity and behavioral changes in a non-invasive murine knee loading model of PTOA. METHOD: Following knee injury NF-ΞΊB activity was assessed longitudinally via in vivo imaging in FVB. Cg-Tg (HIV-EGFP,luc)8Tsb/J mice. Measures of pain-related sensitivity and behavior were also assessed longitudinally for 16 weeks. Additionally, we antagonized NF-ΞΊB signaling via intra-articular delivery of an IΞΊB kinase two antagonist to understand how local NF-ΞΊB inhibition might alter disease progression. RESULTS: Following joint injury NF-ΞΊB signaling within the knee joint was transiently increased and peaked on day 3 with an estimated 1.35 p/s/cm CONCLUSION: These findings underscore the development of behavioral changes in this non-invasive loading model of PTOA and their relationships to NF-ΞΊB activation and pathology. They also highlight the potential chondroprotective effects of NF-ΞΊB inhibition shortly following joint injury despite limitations in preventing the long-term development of joint degeneration in this model of PTOA

    Periodic and Quasiperiodic Motion of an Elongated Microswimmer in Poiseuille Flow

    We study the dynamics of a prolate spheroidal microswimmer in Poiseuille flow for different flow geometries. When moving between two parallel plates or in a cylindrical microchannel, the swimmer performs either periodic swinging or periodic tumbling motion. Although the trajectories of spherical and elongated swimmers are qualitatively similar, the swinging and tumbling frequency strongly depends on the aspect ratio of the swimmer. In channels with reduced symmetry the swimmers perform quasiperiodic motion which we demonstrate explicitely for swimming in a channel with elliptical cross section

    From Teamchef Arminius to Hermann Junior: glocalised discourse about a national foundation myth

    If for much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the β€˜Battle of the Teutoburg Forest’, fought in 9 CE between Roman armies and Germanic tribes, was predominantly a reference point for nationalist and chauvinist discourses in Germany, the first decade of the twenty-first century has seen attempts to link public remembrance with local/regional identities on the one hand and international/intercultural contact on the other. In the run up to and during the β€˜anniversary year’ of 2009, German media, sports institutions and various other official institutions articulating tourist, economic and political interests attempted to create a new β€˜glocalised’ version of the public memory of the Teutoburg battle. Combining methods of Cognitive Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis, the paper analyses the narrative and argumentative topoi employed in this re-orientation of public memory, with a special emphasis on hybrid, post-national identity-construction. Das zweitausendjΓ€hrige Gedenkjahr der β€žSchlacht im Teutoburger Waldβ€œ im Jahr 2009 bot eine gΓΌnstige Gelegenheit, die bis in die zweite HΓ€lfte des 20. Jahrhunderts dominante Tradition nationalistisch–chauvinistischer Deutungen des Sieges von germanischen StΓ€mmen ΓΌber drei rΓΆmische Legionen zu korrigieren und zu ΓΌberwinden. Der Aufsatz analysiert mit Hilfe diskurslinguistischer Methoden die Anstrengungen regionaler Institutionen und Medien, die nationale Vereinnahmung des historischen Gedenkens kritisch zu thematisieren sowie neue, zum eine lokal situierte, zum andern international orientierte Identifikationsangebote anzubieten. Die Analyse zeigt, dass solche β€žde-nationalisiertenβ€œ Identifikationsangebote zwar teilweise auch frΓΌher verwendet wurden, aber heutzutage rekontextualisiert und auf innovative Weise in den Vordergrund gestellt werden

    Reconstructing the three-dimensional GABAergic microcircuit of the striatum

    A system's wiring constrains its dynamics, yet modelling of neural structures often overlooks the specific networks formed by their neurons. We developed an approach for constructing anatomically realistic networks and reconstructed the GABAergic microcircuit formed by the medium spiny neurons (MSNs) and fast-spiking interneurons (FSIs) of the adult rat striatum. We grew dendrite and axon models for these neurons and extracted probabilities for the presence of these neurites as a function of distance from the soma. From these, we found the probabilities of intersection between the neurites of two neurons given their inter-somatic distance, and used these to construct three-dimensional striatal networks. The MSN dendrite models predicted that half of all dendritic spines are within 100 mu m of the soma. The constructed networks predict distributions of gap junctions between FSI dendrites, synaptic contacts between MSNs, and synaptic inputs from FSIs to MSNs that are consistent with current estimates. The models predict that to achieve this, FSIs should be at most 1% of the striatal population. They also show that the striatum is sparsely connected: FSI-MSN and MSN-MSN contacts respectively form 7% and 1.7% of all possible connections. The models predict two striking network properties: the dominant GABAergic input to a MSN arises from neurons with somas at the edge of its dendritic field; and FSIs are interconnected on two different spatial scales: locally by gap junctions and distally by synapses. We show that both properties influence striatal dynamics: the most potent inhibition of a MSN arises from a region of striatum at the edge of its dendritic field; and the combination of local gap junction and distal synaptic networks between FSIs sets a robust input-output regime for the MSN population. Our models thus intimately link striatal micro-anatomy to its dynamics, providing a biologically grounded platform for further study

    Lack of MHC class I surface expression on neoplastic cells and poor activation of the secretory pathway of cytotoxic cells in oral squamous cell carcinomas

    Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and natural killer (NK) cells use the secretory pathway of perforin/granzymes to kill their target cells. In contrast to NK cells, CTL responses are MHC class I restricted. In this study we analysed the relative activation of CTL and NK cells in relation with MHC class I expression on oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs). MHC class I expression was investigated in 47 OSCCs by immunohistochemistry using HCA2, HC10 and Ξ²2-m antibodies. The presence of CTLs, NK cells, and its activation, was investigated in 21 of these OSCCs using respectively, CD8, CD57 and GrB7 antibodies. The Q-Prodit measuring system was used for quantification of cytotoxic cells. All OSCCs showed weak or absent staining of Ξ²2-m on the cell surface. The absence of Ξ²2-m was significantly associated with absent expression of MHC class I heavy chain as detected by HC10 antibody (P = 0.004). In tumour infiltrates CTLs always outnumbered NK cells, as reflected by the ratio CD57/CD8 being always inferior to one (mean: 0.19; SD: 0.15). The proportion of activated cytotoxic cells as detected by granzyme B expression was generally low (mean: 8.6%; SD 8.9). A clear correlation between MHC class I expression and the relative proportion of NK cells/CTLs was not found. This study shows that the majority of OSCCs show weak or absent expression of MHC class I molecules on the cell surface, possibly due to alterations in the normal Ξ²2-m pathway. The low proportion of granzyme B-positive CTLs/NK cells indicates that the secretory pathway of cytotoxicity is poor in these patients. The lack of correlation between MHC class I expression and CTL/NK cell activation as detected by granzyme B expression suggests that, next to poor antigen presentation, also local factors seem to determine the final outcome of the cytotoxic immune response.     Glacial southern ocean expansion recorded in foraminifera-bound nitrogen isotopes from the Agulhas plateau during the mid-Pleistocene transition

    The emergence of 100-Kyr glacial cycles (The Mid-Pleistocene Transition [MPT]) is attributed in part to slower global overturning circulation and iron stimulation of biological carbon drawdown in the Southern Ocean. We present foraminifera-bound nitrogen isotope values and polar planktic foraminifera abundances from the Agulhas Plateau that show that increases in biogenic sediment accumulation coincide with northward migrations of the Subtropical Frontal Zone (STFZ) and elevated foraminifera-bound nitrogen isotope values during MPT glacial episodes. The nitrogen isotope values of two planktic foraminifera species, Globigerina bulloides and Globorotalia inflata show remarkable coherence amongst the sea surface temperature gradient between the STFZ and SAZ, and polar foraminifera abundances, indicating a strong relationship between nitrogen isotope dynamics above the Agulhas Plateau and migrations of the STFZ. Northward migration of the STFZ may have been essential to prolonging glacial intervals by increasing deep ocean carbon storage via a northward shift of the South Westerly Winds and a reduction in upwelling, delivery of fresher surface waters into the upper limb of global overturning circulation, or inhibiting heat and salt delivery to the Atlantic as Agulhas Leakage

    Single-Unit Activity in the Medial Prefrontal Cortex during Immediate and Delayed Extinction of Fear in Rats

    Delivering extinction trials minutes after fear conditioning yields only a short-term fear suppression that fully recovers the following day. Because extinction has been reported to increase CS-evoked spike firing and spontaneous bursting in the infralimbic (IL) division of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), we explored the possibility that this immediate extinction deficit is related to altered mPFC function. Single-units were simultaneously recorded in rats from neurons in IL and the prelimbic (PrL) division of the mPFC during an extinction session conducted 10 minutes (immediate) or 24 hours (delayed) after auditory fear conditioning. In contrast to previous reports, IL neurons exhibited CS-evoked responses early in extinction training in both immediate and delayed conditions and these responses decreased in magnitude over the course of extinction training. During the retention test, CS-evoked firing in IL was significantly greater in animals that failed to acquire extinction. Spontaneous bursting during the extinction and test sessions was also different in the immediate and delayed groups. There were no group differences in PrL activity during extinction or retention testing. Alterations in both spontaneous and CS-evoked neuronal activity in the IL may contribute to the immediate extinction deficit
