Ethnic Identity Maintenance within the Latino-American Church: a Structuration Perspective

The Latino ethnic/immigrant church plays a significant role in maintaining the ethnic identity of its congregants. Through the perspective of structuration theory, this qualitative analysis investigates how the activities of the church impact its members and how an individual might contribute to the cultural structure of the Latino church (i.e., duality of structure). Interviews of 25 pastors from Spanish-speaking congregations in both urban and rural settings in Oregon resulted in several themes including the initial planting of the church, the denominational structure, the emergence of a new multiethnic cultural identity, generational differences, and the influence of Spanish

Educational Motivation in Heritage Speakers of Spanish

This study examined the themes associated with the lack of motivation for school in middle school students, specifically among Heritage Speakers of Spanish. The researcher used two methods to examine student and parent attitudes and beliefs about school and education, as attitudes and beliefs are strongly linked to motivation. The researcher did face-to-face interviews of Mexican parents with direct questions about education and school, and asked middle school students of Mexican descent to read the first part of a short selection about a Mexican immigrant boy in school, then complete the story using their imagination. The researcher compiled the parents\u27 responses, and used content analysis to identify eight themes in the students \u27 narratives. Four findings emerged from the data: Mexican immigrant parents are perceived by their children as ineffective adults, parental expectations regarding school and the future are in conflict with student expectations, students have more extrinsic motivation (rewards) than intrinsic motivation (learning for itself), and students perceive many obstacles to school success

Two tales, an analysis and an excursus on identities and the relationship with the city among “street-dwellers” in Temuco, Chile

    Get PDF

XVII-XVIII. mendeetako Baztango goi-mailako gizartearen etxebizitza tipologia

Baztango bailaran, etxebizitza arkitekturaren baitan goi-mailako arkitektura interesgarria bereizten da. Aipatzeko, arkitektura erlijiosoaren aldean, denbora luzean arkitektura zibilak ez du ikertzaileen artean horrenbesteko interesik sortu, eta are gehiago jauregi arkitekturari dagokionez. Arrazoi nagusi bat dokumentu eta informazioa bilatzeko dauden zailtasunak izan daiteke baina baita patrimonio honekiko dagoen sentsibilizazio falta, arkitektura erlijiosoarekin konparatuz gero, tradizionalki bigarren kategoriakoa kontsideratu baita. Hau dela eta, hutsune bibliografiko bat egon da baina poliki-poliki etxearen inguruko monografia eta artikulu espezializatuak agertzen hasi dira. Argitalpen zaharrenek batik bat, eraikuntza hauen aspektu morfologiko eta formalak aztertzen zituzten. Gaur egun ordea, artearen historiak ekonomia, politika, hezkuntza, soziologia bezalako aspektuak aztertuz ikerketa hauek osatzen hari da. Baztango kasuan Pilar Andueza Unanuaren ikerketa lanak azpimarratzekoak dira. Baztanen emandako migrazio mugimendua, herritarren diru lorpenaren eta Baztango patrimonio aberatsaren iturri nagusiena izan zen. XVII eta XVIII. mendeak funtsezkoak izan ziren migrazioari dagokionez, izan ere, goi mailako gizarteren gailentze ekonomiko eta soziala suposatu zuen. Gertaera honen adierazpen argiena jauregiak izan ziren. Gailentze ekonomiko honek arkitekturaren garapena eragingo du, nibel handiko etxebizitzak bultzatuz. Tamaina handiek, monumentaltasunak eta plastizitateak jabearen fama justifikatu dute. Beraz, lan honen bidez, konturatuko gara mende hauetan jauregi tipologia berri baten agerpena emango dela

Communication, Culture, and Curiosity: Using Target-Culture and Student-Generated Art in the Second Language Classroom

Studying art from the target culture and student creation of original artwork in the second language (L2) classroom have many benefits. Both provide a springboard for discussion of the culture(s) under study as well as one\u27s own. These activities also positively change the classroom atmosphere, generating student curiosity and lowering the affective filter to language learning. Surprising as it may seem, little has been published about the visual arts and second language acquisition (SLA). This article surveys this limited research, briefly describes how brain research and language learning theories interact with art, ans presents the authors\u27 observations of student response to art projects in college-level Spanish and French classes. Finally, it provides practical steps for the classroom, showing how works of art from the target culture as well as student-created pieces can be used to develop the four skills at all levels
