    Interviewing Ronald Wilson Reagan

As a rule, VIPs are likely to be interviewed only by other equal or lesser VIPs. But there is an even stronger rule, little known and indubitably of less consequence, that only VUPs are ever observed interviewing a Big Name in the literal sense, and like all bizarre aberrations in nature it is observed only rarely. I am not speaking of interviewing a Big Name in the figurative sense as Barbara Walters would do, which really means interviewing the actual person. No, I speak of interviewing only the Name itself, which in the present instance is composed of eleven distinct letters of the alphabet: A, D, E, G, I, L, N, O, R, S, and W. For the benefit of those who want a technical name for this kind of wordplay, the interviewee\u27s half of this interview is called a lipogram on the name RONALD WILSON REAGAN, which means that the interviewee utters no words except those which can be spelled using the alphabetical letters in his name

This is the tale of a quasi-mechanical word puzzle propounded by Sam Loyd, a famous British puzzler, to Henry Ernest Dudeney, another famous British puzzler, around the turn of the century. Dudeney is best known for his work in the field of mathematical recreations, but he was also interested in word curiosities, and the Switch Puzzle is one of many included in his book, The World\u27s Best Word Puzzles, published by the Daily News Publications Department, London, 1925

    Logological Poetry: An Editorial

It was Dmitri Borgmann who put the word logology into circulation. Before Language on Vacation, his first book, was published, he wrote to me: I don\u27t believe the word \u27logology\u27 has ever appeared in a book devoted to words or puzzles. I dug it out of the unabridged Oxford while searching for a suitable name for my activity

An Authentic Mathematics Problem Competition and Its Effect on the Performance of Advanced Sixth Grade Learners

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to determine what effect an authentic mathematics problem competition would have on student performance by advanced sixth grade learners. The study was conducted in a public elementary school, in a sixth grade math classroom with twenty five advanced math students. The data sources included a student survey, weekly competition problems, chapter tests, and field notes. The results showed a definite relationship between success in the competition and improved performance in the math class. For students who did well in the competition their chapter test scores improved during the five weeks of the competition. Also, teacher observations saw advanced student engagement and enthusiasm towards math increase. As a result, an authentic mathematics problem competition does affect the performance of advanced sixth grade learners

Policy Brief: Keeping All Students Safe Act of 2014

    Get PDF
Senator Harkin (D-IA), Senator Murphy (D-CT), Senator Baldwin (D-WI), and Senator Hirono (D-HI) introduced the Keeping All Students Safe Act (S.2036) in the Senate on Feb. 24, 2014. Rep. Miller (D-CA) introduced H.R. 1893 on May 9, 2013. The Act would produce limitations for the use of restraints in public and private schools. Currently, 19 states have no policies in place to address this issue. The law would require better training, monitoring and enforcement of these standards, as well as the collection of related data which would be available to the public. We are asking you to co-sponsor the Keeping All Students Safe Act

Background and Purpose. This case report describes the acute care management of an 85-year-old male with three consecutive lower extremity amputations and one associated revascularization procedure at attempt of limb salvage. The purpose of this report is to describe the effects of chronic conditions on various body systems and how they relate to physical therapy rehabilitation post-amputation since limited research is present in this area of physical therapy practice. Case Description. The patient had a very extensive and complicated medical history which included type Il diabetes mellites, chronic kidney disease and peripheral artery disease. His primary goal was to return home to his wife; however, the sequence of three amputations and respective hospitalizations had negatively affected his physical and emotional status. This resulted in the patient\u27s discharge to a subacute rehabilitation setting after all three amputations and respective acute care hospitalizations. Intervention. Interventions of transfer training, bed mobility, assistive device/gait training, patient education, strengthening, activity pacing, energy conservation and neuroreeducation were all included at some point in the patients\u27 plan of care. Outcomes. Throughout the patients\u27 acute care hospitalization with physical therapy intervention, the patient displayed a steady progression of increased pain, decreased strength, decreased endurance, decreased ability to independently perform activities of daily living and decreased ability to perform self-care tasks. Discussion. The prognosis following each subsequent amputation and respective hospitalization had declined drastically. Although acute physical therapy helped the patient improve physically post-amputation , the prognosis for the patient was still less than optimal moving forward

Now that the human race has the power to blacken this planet to a cinder, it has at last become obvious that every sane person has a vital interest in the cause of peace. By what process peace can be achieved is the problem confronting the whole world; but - however it may or may not be done - it is at least possible that a widely acceptable symbol could play a crucial role in the process
