Spatio-Temporal Scaling of Solar Surface Flows
The Sun provides an excellent natural laboratory for nonlinear phenomena. We
use motions of magnetic bright points on the solar surface, at the smallest
scales yet observed, to study the small scale dynamics of the photospheric
plasma. The paths of the bright points are analyzed within a continuous time
random walk framework. Their spatial and temporal scaling suggest that the
observed motions are the walks of imperfectly correlated tracers on a turbulent
fluid flow in the lanes between granular convection cells.Comment: Now Accepted by Physical Review Letter
Cosmological Adaptive Mesh Refinement
We describe a grid-based numerical method for 3D hydrodynamic cosmological
simulations which is adaptive in space and time and combines the best features
of higher order--accurate Godunov schemes for Eulerian hydrodynamics with
adaptive particle--mesh methods for collisionless particles. The basis for our
method is the structured adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) algorithm of Berger &
Collela (1989), which we have extended to cosmological hydro + N-body
simulations. The resulting multiscale hybrid method is a powerful alternative
to particle-based methods in current use. The choices we have made in
constructing this algorithm are discussed, and its performance on the Zeldovich
pancake test problem is given. We present a sample application of our method to
the problem of first structure formation. We have achieved a spatial dynamic
range in a 3D multispecies gas + dark matter
calculation, which is sufficient to resolve the formation of primordial
protostellar cloud cores starting from linear matter fluctuations in an

Class Attendance and Students’ Evaluations of Teaching: Do No-Shows Bias Course Ratings and Rankings?
Background: Many university departments use students’ evaluations of teaching (SET) to compare and rank courses. However, absenteeism from class is often nonrandom and, therefore, SET for different courses might not be comparable. Objective: The present study aims to answer two questions. Are SET positively biased due to absenteeism? Do procedures, which adjust for absenteeism, change course rankings? Research Design: The author discusses the problem from a missing data perspective and present empirical results from regression models to determine which factors are simultaneously associated with students’ class attendance and course ratings. In order to determine the extent of these biases, the author then corrects average ratings for students’ absenteeism and inspect changes in course rankings resulting from this adjustment. Subjects: The author analyzes SET data on the individual level. One or more course ratings are available for each student. Measures: Individual course ratings and absenteeism served as the key outcomes. Results: Absenteeism decreases with rising teaching quality. Furthermore, both factors are systematically related to student and course attributes. Weighting students’ ratings by actual absenteeism leads to mostly small changes in ranks, which follow a power law. Only a few, average courses are disproportionally influenced by the adjustment. Weighting by predicted absenteeism leads to very small changes in ranks. Again, average courses are more strongly affected than courses of very high or low in quality. Conclusions: No-shows bias course ratings and rankings. SET are more appropriate to identify high- and low-quality courses than to determine the exact ranks of average courses
Manifolds with 1/4-pinched flag curvature
We say that a nonnegatively curved manifold has quarter pinched flag
curvature if for any two planes which intersect in a line the ratio of their
sectional curvature is bounded above by 4. We show that these manifolds have
nonnegative complex sectional curvature. By combining with a theorem of Brendle
and Schoen it follows that any positively curved manifold with strictly quarter
pinched flag curvature must be a space form. This in turn generalizes a result
of Andrews and Nguyen in dimension 4. For odd dimensional manifolds we obtain
results for the case that the flag curvature is pinched with some constant
below one quarter, one of which generalizes a recent work of Petersen and Tao
Resistance of a domain wall in the quasiclassical approach
Starting from a simple microscopic model, we have derived a kinetic equation
for the matrix distribution function. We employed this equation to calculate
the conductance in a mesoscopic F'/F/F' structure with a domain wall (DW).
In the limit of a small exchange energy and an abrupt DW, the conductance
of the structure is equal to . Assuming that the scattering times
for electrons with up and down spins are close to each other we show that the
account for a finite width of the DW leads to an increase in this conductance.
We have also calculated the spatial distribution of the electric field in the F
wire. In the opposite limit of large (adiabatic variation of the
magnetization in the DW) the conductance coincides in the main approximation
with the conductance of a single domain structure . The account for rotation of
the magnetization in the DW leads to a negative correction to this conductance.

Discourse stylistics and detective fiction:A case study
Pedagogical stylistics concerns itself with the practice of teaching stylistics in the classroom. The principal aim of such teaching is to make students aware of language use in the texts chosen for study. What characterizes pedagogical stylistics is that classroom activities are interactive between the text and the (student) reader, with both the texts and the activities usually chosen by the teacher (see Clark 1996; Clark and Zyngier 2003; Clark and McRae 2004; Simpson 2004). Part of this self-same process of improving students’ linguistic sensibilities has to include placing greater emphasis upon the text as action: the mental processing which is such a proactive part of reading and interpretation, and how all these elements – pragmatic and cognitive as well as linguistic – function within quite specific social and cultural contexts
Analytic Calculation of Prompt Photon plus Associated Heavy Flavor at Next-to-Leading Order in QCD
Contributions through second order, , in perturbative quantum
chromodynamics are calculated analytically for inclusive associated production
of a prompt photon and a charm quark at large values of transverse momentum in
high energy hadron-hadron collisions. Seven partonic subprocesses contribute at
order . We find important corrections to the lowest order,

Summary of the Very Large Hadron Collider Physics and Detector Workshop
One of the options for an accelerator beyond the LHC is a hadron collider
with higher energy. Work is going on to explore accelerator technologies that
would make such a machine feasible. This workshop concentrated on the physics
and detector issues associated with a hadron collider with an energy in the
center of mass of the order of 100 to 200 TeV
R-parity violating resonant stop production at the Large Hadron Collider
We have investigated the resonant production of a stop at the Large Hadron
Collider, driven by baryon number violating interactions in supersymmetry. We
work in the framework of minimal supergravity models with the lightest
neutralino being the lightest supersymmetric particle which decays within the
detector. We look at various dilepton and trilepton final states, with or
without b-tags. A detailed background simulation is performed, and all possible
decay modes of the lighter stop are taken into account. We find that higher
stop masses are sometimes easier to probe, through the decay of the stop into
the third or fourth neutralino and their subsequent cascades. We also comment
on the detectability of such signals during the 7 TeV run, where, as expected,
only relatively light stops can be probed. Our conclusion is that the resonant
process may be probed, at both 10 and 14 TeV, with the R-parity violating
coupling {\lambda}"_{312} as low as 0.05, for a stop mass of about 1 TeV. The
possibility of distinguishing between resonant stop production and

Hinode Observations of Magnetic Elements in Internetwork Areas
We use sequences of images and magnetograms from Hinode to study magnetic
elements in internetwork parts of the quiet solar photosphere. Visual
inspection shows the existence of many long-lived (several hours) structures
that interact frequently, and may migrate over distances ~7 Mm over a period of
a few hours. About a fifth of the elements have an associated bright point in
G-band or Ca II H intensity. We apply a hysteresis-based algorithm to identify
elements. The algorithm is able to track elements for about 10 min on average.
Elements intermittently drop below the detection limit, though the associated
flux apparently persists and often reappears some time later. We infer proper
motions of elements from their successive positions, and find that they obey a
Gaussian distribution with an rms of 1.57+-0.08 km/s. The apparent flows
indicate a bias of about 0.2 km/s toward the network boundary. Elements of
negative polarity show a higher bias than elements of positive polarity,
perhaps as a result of to the dominant positive polarity of the network in the
field of view, or because of increased mobility due to their smaller size. A
preference for motions in X is likely explained by higher supergranular flow in
that direction. We search for emerging bipoles by grouping elements of opposite
polarity that appear close together in space and time. We find no evidence
supporting Joy's law at arcsecond scales.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figure
