Harmonic coordinate method for simulating generic singularities
This paper presents both a numerical method for general relativity and an
application of that method. The method involves the use of harmonic coordinates
in a 3+1 code to evolve the Einstein equations with scalar field matter. In
such coordinates, the terms in Einstein's equations with the highest number of
derivatives take a form similar to that of the wave equation. The application
is an exploration of the generic approach to the singularity for this type of
matter. The preliminary results indicate that the dynamics as one approaches

Maternal Life Satisfaction and Child Outcomes: Are They Related?
This paper investigates the association between maternal life satisfaction and the developmental functioning of two- to three-year-old children as well as the socio-emotional behaviorof five- to six-year-old children. We use data from the German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP), which allows us to control for a rich set of child and parental characteristics and to use the mother's life satisfaction before the birth of her child as an instrument to eliminate potential reverse causality. The results indicate that the more satisfied the mother, the better her child's verbal skills and the lower his or her socio-emotional problems. The relation is more pronounced for boys than for girls. The groupoidal analogue Theta~ to Joyal's category Theta is a test category
We introduce the groupoidal analogue \tilde\Theta to Joyal's cell category
\Theta and we prove that \tilde\Theta is a strict test category in the sense of
Grothendieck. This implies that presheaves on \tilde\Theta model homotopy types
in a canonical way. We also prove that the canonical functor from \Theta to
\tilde\Theta is aspherical, again in the sense of Grothendieck. This allows us
to compare weak equivalences of presheaves on \tilde\Theta to weak equivalences
of presheaves on \Theta. Our proofs apply to other categories analogous to

Differential treatment of bipolar disorder with old and new antiepileptic drugs
Although lithium remains the preferred medication for bipolar disorders, new investigations suggest that only 60 to 80% of patients have a good response with a classical presentation. The antiepileptics carbamazepine and valproate are important alternatives. Several studies have shown that lithium, carbamazepine and valproate are effective in pure mania. Mixed mania and rapid cycling respond, however, well to valproate. One disadvantage of carbamazepine is its enzyme inducing property with the consequence of a decrease of plasma levels of other psychotropic medications and a worsening of psychopathology. First data indicate a good antimanic and antidepressive efficacy of the new antiepileptic drug lamotrigine
Lepton Mass Effects in Single Pion Production by Neutrinos
We reconsider the Feynman-Kislinger-Ravndal model applied to
neutrino-excitation of baryon resonances. The effects of lepton mass are
included, using the formalism of Kuzmin, Lyubushkin and Naumov. In addition we
take account of the pion-pole contribution to the hadronic axial vector
current. Application of this new formalism to the reaction nu(mu) + p --> mu +
Delta at E(nu) approx 1 GeV gives a suppressed cross section at small angles,
in agreement with the screening correction in Adler's forward scattering
theorem. Application to the process nu(tau) + p --> tau + Delta at E(nu) approx
7 GeV leads to the prediction of right-handed tau polarization for
forward-going leptons, in line with a calculation based on an isobar model. Our
formalism represents an improved version of the Rein-Sehgal model,

Optical properties of periodic systems within the current-current response framework: pitfalls and remedies
We compare the optical absorption of extended systems using the
density-density and current-current linear response functions calculated within
many-body perturbation theory. The two approaches are formally equivalent for a
finite momentum of the external perturbation. At
, however, the equivalence is maintained only if a small
expansion of the density-density response function is used. Moreover, in
practical calculations this equivalence can be lost if one naively extends the
strategies usually employed in the density-based approach to the current-based
approach. Specifically we discuss the use of a smearing parameter or of the
quasiparticle lifetimes to describe the finite width of the spectral peaks and
the inclusion of electron-hole interaction. In those instances we show that the
incorrect definition of the velocity operator and the violation of the
conductivity sum rule introduce unphysical features in the optical absorption
spectra of three paradigmatic systems: silicon (semiconductor), copper (metal)
and lithium fluoride (insulator). We then demonstrate how to correctly
introduce lifetime effects and electron-hole interactions within the

Landau level spectroscopy of ultrathin graphite layers
Far infrared transmission experiments are performed on ultrathin epitaxial
graphite samples in a magnetic field. The observed cyclotron resonance-like and
electron-positron-like transitions are in excellent agreement with the
expectations of a single-particle model of Dirac fermions in graphene, with an

From Koszul duality to Poincar\'e duality
We discuss the notion of Poincar\'e duality for graded algebras and its
connections with the Koszul duality for quadratic Koszul algebras. The
relevance of the Poincar\'e duality is pointed out for the existence of twisted
potentials associated to Koszul algebras as well as for the extraction of a
