    Die Versorgung der Offizierswitwen der k.(u.)k. Armee und ihre Darlegung in militƤrischen Zeitschriften

    Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Versorgung der Offizierswitwen der k.(u.)k. Armee von staatlicher Seite, durch private WohltƤtigkeit und Selbsthilfeinitiativen. Zudem werden ihre ƶffentliche Thematisierung von Seiten des MilitƤrs und die Positionen, Forderungen und Ansichten der Offiziere an Hand der Berichterstattung in militƤrischen Zeitschriften ā€“ ā€šArmeeblattā€™, ā€šArmee- und Marine-Zeitungā€™, ā€šDanzers Armee-Zeitungā€™, ā€šMilitƤr-Zeitungā€™ und ā€šVedetteā€™ ā€“ dargelegt. Es werden die rechtlichen Bestimmungen der ā€šGnadenversorgungā€™, der Heiratsvorschriften und Heiratskaution, und der staatlichen Witwenpension erlƤutert. Ferner werden die Entwicklung, die Motiv und die Intention der gesetzlichen Bestimmungen der einzelnen Bereiche erƶrtert. Es wird dargelegt, wie die militƤrischen Zeitschriften die Gesetze beurteilten und welche Forderungen sie erhoben. Zudem wird die mediale Inszenierung und argumentative Vermittlung des Themenkomplexes in den militƤrischen Zeitschriften untersucht. Es werden die Stiftungen zu Gunsten von Offizierswitwen erƶrtert, wobei die Gemeinsamkeiten, Unterschiede und Tendenzen ihrer Ausgestaltung erlƤutert und anhand von Beispielen dargelegt werden. AnschlieƟend werden die zwei Vereine ā€šKaiser Franz Josef-Stiftung fĆ¼r Versorgung der k.k. Offiziers-Witwen und Waisenā€™ und ā€šPension fĆ¼r Officiers-Witwen und Waisen Oesterreich Ungarnsā€™ vorgestellt. Es werden die Organisation, Ausgestaltung, und der Aufbau der Vereine skizziert. Ferner wird die staatliche und private UnterstĆ¼tzung erƶrtert und die Rolle der untersuchten militƤrischen Zeitschriften und die ƶffentliche PrƤsentation der Vereine analysiert

    Religion and Crime Studies: Assessing What Has Been Learned

    This paper provides a review of the literature that assesses the relationship between religion and crime. Research on the relationship between religion and crime indicates that certain aspects of religion reduces participation in criminal activity. A review of the literature indicates religion reduces participation in criminal activity in two broad ways. First, religion seems to operate at a micro level. Studies have pointed to how religious beliefs are associated with self-control. Second, researches have examined the social control aspects of religion. In particular, how factors such as level of participation and social support from such participation reduces criminal activity. Likewise, findings suggest that although there has been a sizable number of studies and diverse interests of researchers examining the religion/crime nexus, the research has not identified which aspects of religion have the strongest influence on crime reduction. In addition, the specific ways in which these factors are associated with crime reduction have not been comprehensively identified. Similarly, more than 40 years of empirical scholarship suggests that religion suppresses criminal behavior. Nevertheless, these findings remain controversial as the literature neither accentuates the mechanisms of religion responsible for suppressing criminal behavior, nor does the literature reject the spuriousness of the religion-crime association relative to mediating effects of self-control and social control. Finally, our review suggests that methodological constraints infringe on the capacity for sociological and criminological to accurately ascertain the validity of the religion-crime nexus, often generating mixed or inconclusive findings on the religion-crime association. Our paper concludes with recommendations for future empirical scholarship that examines the religion-crime nexus. Ā© 2018 by the authors

    CD1 Gene Polymorphisms and Phenotypic Variability in X-Linked Adrenoleukodystrophy

    X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is characterized by marked phenotypic variation ranging from adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN) to childhood cerebral ALD (CCALD). X-ALD is caused by mutations in the ABCD1 gene, but no genotype-phenotype correlation has been established so far and modifier gene variants are suspected to modulate phenotypes. Specific classes of lipids, enriched in very long-chain fatty acids that accumulate in plasma and tissues from X-ALD patients are suspected to be involved in the neuroinflammatory process of CCALD. CD1 proteins are lipid- antigen presenting molecules encoded by five CD1 genes in human (CD1A-E). Association studies with 23 tag SNPs covering the CD1 locus was performed in 52 patients with AMN and 87 patients with CCALD. The minor allele of rs973742 located 4-kb downstream from CD1D was significantly more frequent in AMN patients (Ļ‡2ā€Š=ā€Š7.6; Pā€Š=ā€Š0.006). However, this association was no longer significant after Bonferroni correction for multiple testing. The other polymorphisms of the CD1 locus did not reveal significant association. Further analysis of other CD1D polymorphisms did not detect stronger association with X-ALD phenotypes. Although the association with rs973742 warrants further investigations, these results indicate that the genetic variants of CD1 genes do not contribute markedly to the phenotypic variance of X-ALD

    The effect of distant reiki on pain in women after elective Caesarean section: a double-blinded randomised controlled trial

    Introduction: Approximately 25% of all babies in North America are delivered via Caesarean section (C-section). Though a common surgical procedure, C-section recovery can be painful. Opioids, specifically codeine, are commonly used to ease pain; however, its active metabolite, morphine, passes into breast milk, and may produce unwanted side effects in neonates; therefore, alternatives to opioids are being sought. Reiki is an ancient Japanese form of healing where practitioners transfer healing energy through light touch and positive healing intention. Although 1.2 million Americans use reiki to reduce pain or depression, there is a lack of strong evidence supporting its effectiveness. A recent systematic review showed existing studies to be of poor methodological quality, with the common limitation of lack of blinding. To overcome this issue, the authors used distant reiki to assess its effectiveness in reducing pain following an elective C-section. Methods: In this randomised, double-blinded study, women who underwent an elective C-section were allocated to either usual care (control, n=40) or three distant reiki sessions in addition to usual care (n=40). Pain was assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS). The primary endpoint was the Area Under the VAS-Time Curve (AUC) for days 1-3. Secondary measures included: The proportion of women who required opioid medications and dose consumed, rate of healing and vital signs. Results: AUC for pain was not significantly different in the distant reiki and control groups (meanĀ±SD; 212.16104.7 vs 223.16117.8; p=0.96).     Release of Bet v 1 from birch pollen from 5 European countries. Results from the HIALINE study

    Exposure to allergens is pivotal in determining sensitization and allergic symptoms in individuals. Pollen grain counts in ambient air have traditionally been assessed to estimate airborne allergen exposure. However, the exact allergen content of ambient air is unknown. We therefore monitored atmospheric concentrations of birch pollen grains and the matched major birch pollen allergen Bet v 1 simultaneously across Europe within the EU-funded project HIALINE (Health Impacts of Airborne Allergen Information Network). Pollen count was assessed with Hirst type pollen traps at 10 l min 1 at sites in France, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Finland. Allergen concentrations in ambient air were sampled at 800 l min 1 with a Chemvol high-volume cascade impactor equipped with stages PM > 10 mm, 10 mm > PM > 2.5 mm, and in Germany also 2.5 mm > PM > 0.12 mm. The major birch pollen allergen Bet v 1 was determined with an allergen specific ELISA. Bet v 1 isoform patterns were analyzed by 2D-SDS-PAGE blots and mass spectrometric identification. Basophil activation was tested in an Fc 3R1-humanized rat basophil cell line passively sensitized with serum of a birch pollen symptomatic patient. Compared to 10 previous years, 2009 was a representative birch pollen season for all stations. About 90% of the allergen was found in the PM > 10 mm fraction at all stations. Bet v 1 isoforms pattern did not vary substantially neither during ripening of pollen nor between different geographical locations. The average European allergen release from birch pollen was 3.2 pg Bet v 1/pollen and did not vary much between the European countries. However, in all countries a >10-fold difference in daily allergen release per pollen was measured which could be explained by long-range transport of pollen with a deviating allergen release. Basophil activation by ambient air extracts correlated better with airborne allergen than with pollen concentration. Although Bet v 1 is a mixture of different isoforms, its fingerprint is constant across Europe. Bet v 1 was also exclusively linked to pollen. Pollen from different days varied >10-fold in allergen release. Thus exposure to allergen is inaccurately monitored by only monitoring birch pollen grains. Indeed, a humanized basophil activation test correlated much better with allergen concentrations in ambient air than with pollen count.     Recommendations for clinical research in children presenting to primary care out-of-hours services

    BACKGROUND: Research in primary care is essential, but recruiting children in this setting can be complex and may cause selection bias. Challenges surrounding informed consent, particularly in an acute clinical setting, can undermine feasibility. The off-protocol use of an intervention nearing implementation has become common in pragmatic randomized controlled trials (RCTs) set in primary care. AIM: To describe how the informed consent procedure affects study inclusion and to assess how off-protocol medication prescribing affects participant selection in a paediatric RCT. DESIGN: A pragmatic RCT evaluating the cost-effectiveness of oral ondansetron in children diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis in primary care out-of-hours services and a parallel cohort study. METHOD: Consecutive children aged 6 months to 6 years attending primary care out-of-hours services with acute gastroenteritis were evaluated to assess the feasibility of obtaining informed consent, the off-protocol use of ondansetron, and other inclusion/exclusion criteria. RESULTS: The RCTs feasibility was reduced by the informed consent procedure because 39.0% (325/834) of children were accompanied by only one parent. General practitioners prescribed ondansetron off-protocol to 34 children (4.1%), whereof 19 children were eligible for the RCT. RCT-eligible children included in the parallel cohort had fewer risk factors for dehydration than children in the RCT despite similar dehydration assessments by general practitioners. CONCLUSION: The informed consent procedure and off-protocol use of study medication affect the inclusion rate but had little effect on selection. A parallel cohort study alongside the RCT can help evaluate selection bias, and a pilot study can reveal potential barriers to inclusion

    Development of a Sandwich ELISA to Measure Exposure to Occupational Cow Hair Allergens

    Background: Cow hair and dander are important inducers of occupational allergies in cattle-exposed farmers. To estimate allergen exposure in farming environments, a sensitive enzyme immunoassay was developed to measure cow hair allergens. Methods: A sandwich ELISA was developed using polyclonal rabbit antibodies against a mixture of hair extracts from different cattle breeds. To assess the specificity of the assay, extracts from other mammalian epithelia, mites, molds and grains were tested. To validate the new assay, cow hair allergens were measured in passive airborne dust samples from the stables and homes of farmers. Dust was collected with electrostatic dust fall collectors (EDCs). Results: The sandwich ELISA was found to be very sensitive (detection limit: 0.1 ng/ml) and highly reproducible, demonstrating intra-and interassay coefficients of variation of 4 and 10%, respectively. The assay showed no reactivity with mites, molds and grains, but some cross-reactivity with other mammalian epithelia, with the strongest reaction with goat. Using EDCs for dust sampling, high concentrations of bovine allergens were measured in cow stables (4,760-559,400 mu g/m(2)). In addition, bovine allergens were detected in all areas of cattle farmer dwellings. A large variation was found between individual samples (0.3-900 mu g/m(2)) and significantly higher values were discovered in changing rooms. Conclusion: The ELISA developed for the detection of cow hair proteins is a useful tool for allergen quantification in occupational and home environments.
