The problem of irreducibility of the moduli space I_n of rank-2 mathematical instanton vector bundles with arbitrary positive second Chern class n on the projective 3-space is considered. The irreducibility of I_n was known for small values of n: Barth 1977 (n=1), Hartshorne 1978 (n=2), Ellingsrud and Stromme 1981 (n=3), Barth 1981 (n=4), Coanda, Tikhomirov and Trautmann 2003 (n=5). In this paper we prove the irreducibility of I_n for an arbitrary odd n.Comment: 62 page

Quantitative evaluation of the signal-to-noise ratio and of its improvement (or degradation) by digital filters

The global signal-to-noise of a data set (spectrum, image...) can be quantitatively evaluated if a second version of the data can be recorded in identical conditions. The possible applications of this computation are: the comparison of different data acquisition procedures (with respect to the signal-to-noise ratio); the evaluation of digital filters applied to the original double data set, concerning the improvement or degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio which results from their application.

Multimodal and multimedia image analysis and collaborative networking for digestive endoscopy

Objective The ultimate goal of the Syseo project is to create a chain of collaborative processes to allow the hepato-gastroenterology endoscopy specialist to manage images easily. Methods A field study has been done to better understand and formalize practices and contexts of use. Based on these results, we have designed tools for gastroenterology, tackling several domains of computer science and reusing well-known format or concepts especially DICOM files, semantic retrieval and infocus-breakpoint. Results Syseo consists in four main components: (1) a data management system relying on the well-known standard DICOM format; (2) a polyp ontology and description logics to manage gastroenterological images; (3) software to estimate the size of a neoplasia from colonoscopic images and (4) pearly user interfaces to enhance collaboration. Discussion Preliminary results of Syseo are quite promising since the proposed solutions enable to efficiently store, annotate, retrieve medical data, while providing relatively accurate measuring tools for physicians and medical staff

Evaluation of nutritional status in head and neck radio-treated patients affected by oral mucositis: efficacy of class IV laser therapy.

PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate the role of class IV laser therapy in the amelioration of nutritional status of patients affected by oral mucositis due to radiotherapy of the head and neck region during oncological treatment. METHODS: Sixty-three oncological patients were included in this study. All patients were affected by tumors in the head and neck region and had developed oral mucositis during radiotherapy. Forty-two patients had been treated by high-power laser therapy whereas 21 patients had been managed with traditional medications. Data collection included weight measurement (kilogram) and body mass index (BMI) calculation (mass (kilogram)/(height) (square meter)) on the first and last day of radiotherapy. In addition, gender, age, pathology, and the kind of oncological treatment have been considered. RESULTS: Laser-treated patients decreased less in BMI during radiotherapy (p = 0.000). Patients treated by combined oncological treatments (radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy and/or surgery) had a higher weight loss during radiotherapy (p = 0.015). According to a multivariate regression analysis, the only variable which significantly influenced the reduction of BMI was laser treatment (p = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: Laser therapy is actually considered one of the recommended remedies for the healing of oral mucositis due to cancer treatments. Healing of mucositis can deeply influence the feeding capacity of patients, through reduction of pain and improvement of chewing and swallowing capacities. It also allows lowering the costs for hospitalization and supportive care. Laser therapy should become part of nutritional interventions in oncological patients affected by oral mucositis
