    Elementary Derivative Tasks and Neural Net Multiscale Analysis of Tasks

    Neural nets are known to be universal approximators. In particular, formal neurons implementing wavelets have been shown to build nets able to approximate any multidimensional task. Such very specialized formal neurons may be, however, difficult to obtain biologically and/or industrially. In this paper we relax the constraint of a strict ``Fourier analysis'' of tasks. Rather, we use a finite number of more realistic formal neurons implementing elementary tasks such as ``window'' or ``Mexican hat'' responses, with adjustable widths. This is shown to provide a reasonably efficient, practical and robust, multifrequency analysis. A training algorithm, optimizing the task with respect to the widths of the responses, reveals two distinct training modes. The first mode induces some of the formal neurons to become identical, hence promotes ``derivative tasks''.     Modeling Envisat RA-2 waveforms in the coastal zone: case-study of calm water contamination

    Radar altimeters have so far had limited use in the coastal zone, the area with most societal impact. This is due to both lack of, or insufficient accuracy in the necessary corrections, and more complicated altimeter signals. This paper examines waveform data from the Envisat RA-2 as it passes regularly over Pianosa (a 10 km2 island in the NW Mediterranean). Forty-six repeat passes were analysed, with most showing a reduction in signal upon passing over the island, with weak early returns corresponding to the reflections from land. Intriguingly one third of cases showed an anomalously bright hyperbolic feature. This feature may be due to extremely calm waters in the Golfo della Botte (northern side of the island), but the cause of its intermittency is not clear. The modelling of waveforms in such a complex land/sea environment demonstrates the potential for sea surface height retrievals much closer to the coast than is achieved by routine processing. The long-term development of altimetric records in the coastal zone will not only improve the calibration of altimetric data with coastal tide gauges, but also greatly enhance the study of storm surges and other coastal phenomena

    We reported on a neural progenitor cell biomarker, a lipid-based metabolite enriched in these cells, which we detected using spectroscopy both in vitro and in vivo, and singular value decomposition–based signal processing. The study provided an outline of our computational methodology. Herein, we report more extensively on the method of spectrum analysis used, demonstrating the specificity of our findings

    Describing parallel hardware and software is difficult, especially in an embedded setting. Five years ago, we started the shim project to address this challenge by developing a programming language for hardware/software systems. The resulting language describes asynchronously running processes that has the useful property of scheduling-independence: the i/o of a shim program is not affected by any scheduling choices. This paper presents a history of the shim project with a focus on the key things we have learned along the way

    Mapping the X-Ray Emission Region in a Laser-Plasma Accelerator

    The x-ray emission in laser-plasma accelerators can be a powerful tool to understand the physics of relativistic laser-plasma interaction. It is shown here that the mapping of betatron x-ray radiation can be obtained from the x-ray beam profile when an aperture mask is positioned just beyond the end of the emission region. The influence of the plasma density on the position and the longitudinal profile of the x-ray emission is investigated and compared to particle-in-cell simulations. The measurement of the x-ray emission position and length provides insight on the dynamics of the interaction, including the electron self-injection region, possible multiple injection, and the role of the electron beam driven wakefield.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Kahn Process Networks and a Reactive Extension

    Kahn and MacQueen have introduced a generic class of determinate asynchronous data-flow applications, called Kahn Process Networks (KPNs) with an elegant mathematical model and semantics in terms of Scott-continuous functions on data streams together with an implementation model of independent asynchronous sequential programs communicating through FIFO buffers with blocking read and non-blocking write operations. The two are related by the Kahn Principle which states that a realization according to the implementation model behaves as predicted by the mathematical function. Additional steps are required to arrive at an actual implementation of a KPN to take care of scheduling of independent processes on a single processor and to manage communication buffers. Because of the expressiveness of the KPN model, buffer sizes and schedules cannot be determined at design time in general and require dynamic run-time system support. Constraints are discussed that need to be placed on such system support so as to maintain the Kahn Principle.We then discuss a possible extension of the KPN model to include the possibility for sporadic, reactive behavior which is not possible in the standard model. The extended model is called Reactive Process Networks. We introduce its semantics, look at analyzability and at more constrained data-flow models combined with reactive behavior
