Internet Addiction to Child Pornography

During the present age and time, it seems as though people in society have become addicted to nearly anything and everything, whether it be to a substance, an activity or an object. The Internet and pornography is no exception. While commonly thought of as a deviant behavior, many are displaying addictions towards the Internet and pornography. More alarming, however, are those who are viewing, downloading, or trading child pornography and displaying addictive Internet behaviors, for they are spending excessive amounts of time engaging in the proliferation of child pornographic materials. For this reason, addiction to the Internet and usage of child pornography are the main points of the current study. The self-reported survey, which was part of a larger project to fulfill requirements for a Master of Science degree, measured demographics, Internet usage and child pornography usage, to find valuable statistical data and to gain an understanding of those who are engaging in child exploitation on the Internet. The current study proved to measure child pornography usage on the Internet correlated with Internet addiction. While the study is not without limitations, it provides valuable information about those who are engaging in child pornography. The ultimate goal was to gain an understanding of those engaging in child pornography on the Internet, in order to prevent more children from falling victim of these predators. Perceptions of Body Size in Mothers and Their Young Children in the Galapagos Islands

Retinal detachment post-phacoemulsification in Bichons Frises: A retrospective study of 54 dogs

Objective—To compare rates of retinal detachment (RD) post phacoemulsification in American Bichons Frises with and without prophylactic retinopexy. Procedures—Medical records of 54 Bichons Frises undergoing phacoemulsification with or without prophylactic retinopexy between 2003–2013 in one or both eyes were reviewed from five Midwestern university veterinary teaching hospitals. Inclusion criteria were pre-operative ERG, at least 6 months of follow up post phacoemulsification, and absence of pre-existing RD as determined by ophthalmic examination and/or ultrasound. Statistical analyses used chi-squared and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests and Wilson confidence intervals with the p value Results—Phacoemulsification was performed without retinopexy in 79 eyes (42 dogs, non-PR group) and with prophylactic retinopexy in 23 eyes (12 dogs, PR group). Incidence of diabetes mellitus was 10/42 and 3/12 in the non-PR and the PR groups respectively (p=0.93). Intraocular lens implantation was performed in 40/42 non-PR dogs and 11/12 PR dogs, (p=0.63, 73/79 versus 21/23 eyes). At final re-examination, RD occurred in 4/79 eyes without retinopexy, compared to 0/23 RD in the retinopexy group. There was no statistically significant difference in RD rates between the two groups (p=0.27) Conclusions—These data provide no statistical evidence to support prophylactic retinopexy in Bichon Frises. Due to the low rate of retinal detachment following phacoemulsification without prophylactic retinopexy, the procedure appears to offer limited benefit to offset cost, procedural risk and risk of extended or repeated anesthesia in Bichons Frises

Urban PDS Partnership: Preparing Teachers for Social Justice

We believe that for urban schools to meet their goals and mission — in the way the DECA is modeling — takes a partnership among many stakeholders. One such partnership that supports DECA, and might buttress other schools and students — and simultaneously help to enact a social justice ideal — is a school-university connection. DECA was founded as a Professional Development School (PDS), with the school and university developing a reciprocal relationship with a shared focus on the preparation of new teachers, the enhancement of high school students\u27 achievement, school and university faculty members\u27 professional development, and collaborative inquiries aimed at improving instructional practices for all of the educators involved. In this chapter, we will describe our Midwestern university\u27s response to two social justice issues: the lack of support for urban students to be ready for college; and the issue of teacher quality in urban schools. DECA explicitly endeavors to respond to the dearth of educational opportunities for city youth. As well, as a PDS, DECA serves the university and our profession as a site for preparing the next generation of urban teachers. Our partnership relies on a PDS framework and a social justice approach to impact students\u27 access to learning and to develop quality educators through learning communities. Using the lenses of the Marianist Catholic tradition and the PDS mission, here we will frame our social justice stance. We will specifically describe the revamping of two critical courses in the teacher education program with the goal of enacting social justice through developing effective teachers for urban settings

Pressure Ulcer Prevention: A Quality Improvement Project

A pressure ulcer is an injury that affects the underlying tissue and skin and is primarily caused by prolonged pressure on the skin. During a clinical rotation at a small rural teaching hospital, pressure ulcers were prevalent in an estimated 80% of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) during a three-week period. Approximately $26.8 billion are spent every year in the United States treating pressure ulcers. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to provide staff education to ICU nurses in order to reduce and prevent the prevalence of pressure ulcers in patients. A thorough literature review was completed on 64 studies related to pressure ulcers that focused on causes, effects, costs, education, treatments, and preventative measures. Educating Dairy and Beef Producers on Environmental Issues and Regulatory Concerns for Smaller Farms

Livestock producers in Iowa have seen a progression of regulations and compliance enforcement throughout the past two decades. Awareness through Extension meetings and information put out by commodity groups has played a substantial role in bringing confinement feeding operations and large CAFO feedlots into compliance. For small to medium-sized feedlots and dairies that may or may not be classified as CAFOs, the education and outreach was not formalized prior to the EPA beginning their recent compliance reviews. This issue surfaced because of EPA interpretation of regulations and the subsequent impact on livestock producers. The message from EPA was not well defined and still remains a challenge for livestock producers, extension personnel, and agribusiness (advisers) and agency staff
