    Let GG be a real algebraic semi-simple Lie group and Γ\Gamma be the fundamental group of a compact negatively curved manifold. In this article we study the limit cone, introduced by Benoist, and the growth indicator function, introduced by Quint, for a class of representations ρ:ΓG\rho:\Gamma\to G admitting a equivariant map from Γ\partial\Gamma to the Furstenberg boundary of GG's symmetric space together with a transversality condition.     Multiple merging events in Abell 521

    We present a detailed spatial and dynamical analysis of the central \sim~2.2~\h~Mpc region of the galaxy cluster Abell~521 (z=0.247), based on 238 spectra obtained at the 3.6~m Telescope of ESO and at the CFHT. From the analysis of the 125 galaxies confirmed members of the cluster, we derive a mean velocity of 74019125+11274019 ^{+112}_{-125} km/s and detect a complex velocity distribution with high velocity dispersion, 1325100+1451325 ^{+145}_{-100} km/s), but clear departure from a single gaussian component. The general structure of the cluster follows a NW/SE direction, crossed by a perpendicular high density ``ridge'' of galaxies in the core region. The northern region of the cluster is characterized by a lower velocity dispersion as compared to the whole cluster value; it hosts the BCG and a dynamically bound complex of galaxies, and it is associated to a group detected in X-ray (Arnaud et al 2000). This region could be in pre-merger stage onto the main cluster nearly in the plane of the sky. These results, taken together with the fact that most of the clumps detected on the isodensity maps, as well as the early type galaxies and the brightest ones are aligned, suggest that this NW/SE direction is the preferred one for the formation of this cluster. The central high dense region shows a lower velocity location (73625350+34473625 ^{+344}_{-350} km/s) and significantly higher scale (1780142+2341780 ^{+234}_{-142} km/s) as compared to the whole cluster values. This is due to the presence of a low-velocity group of galaxies with a high fraction of emission line objects. This can be explained in a scenario in which a merging of subclusters has recently occurred along the direction of the ``ridge'' with a significant component along the line of sight.Comment: 21 pages, 32 figures, uses aa.cls style, Latex.     Properties of Very Luminous Galaxies

    Recent analysis of the SSRS2 data based on cell-counts and two-point correlation function has shown that very luminous galaxies are much more strongly clustered than fainter galaxies. In fact, the amplitude of the correlation function of very luminous galaxies (L>LL > L^*) asymptotically approaches that of R0R \ge 0 clusters. In this paper we investigate the properties of the most luminous galaxies, with blue absolute magnitude MB21M_B \le -21. We find that: 1) the population mix is comparable to that in other ranges of absolute magnitudes; 2) only a small fraction are located in bona fide clusters; 3) the bright galaxy-cluster cross-correlation function is significantly higher on large scales than that measured for fainter galaxies; 4) the correlation length of galaxies brighter than \MB 20.0 \sim -20.0, expressed as a function of the mean interparticle distance, appears to follow the universal dimensionless correlation function found for clusters and radio galaxies; 5) a large fraction of the bright galaxies are in interacting pairs, others show evidence for tidal distortions, while some appear to be surrounded by faint satellite galaxies. We conclude that very luminous optical galaxies differ from the normal population of galaxies both in the clustering and other respects. Data from both good and foreclosed Federal Land Bank loans were analyzed to determine the most important characteristics leading to the failure of loans. The analysis was completed by comparing means through t-tests and the development of a discriminant model.     Compact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with parallel Weyl tensor

    It is shown that in every dimension n=3j+2, j=1,2,3,..., there exist compact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with parallel Weyl tensor, which are Ricci-recurrent, but neither conformally flat nor locally symmetric, and represent all indefinite metric signatures. The manifolds in question are diffeomorphic to nontrivial torus bundles over the circle. They all arise from a construction that a priori yields bundles over the circle, having as the fibre either a torus, or a 2-step nilmanifold with a complete flat torsionfree connection; our argument only realizes the torus case.Comment: 19 page

    A2163: Merger events in the hottest Abell galaxy cluster II. Subcluster accretion with galaxy-gas separation

    Located at z = 0.203, A2163 is a rich galaxy cluster with an intra-cluster medium (ICM) that exhibits extraordinary properties, including an exceptionally high X-ray luminosity, average temperature, and a powerful and extended radio halo. The irregular and complex morphology of its gas and galaxy structure suggests that this cluster has recently undergone major merger events that involve two or more cluster components. In this paper, we study the gas structure and dynamics by means of spectral-imaging analysis of X-ray data obtained from XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. From the evidence of a cold front, we infer the westward motion of a cool core across the E-W elongated atmosphere of the main cluster A2163-A. Located close to a galaxy over-density, this gas 'bullet' appears to have been spatially separated from its galaxy (and presumably dark matter component) as a result of high-velocity accretion. From gas brightness and temperature profile analysis performed in two opposite regions of the main cluster, we show that the ICM has been adiabatically compressed behind the crossing 'bullet' possibly because of shock heating, leading to a strong departure of the ICM from hydrostatic equilibrium in this region. Assuming that the mass estimated from the Yx proxy best indicates the overall mass of the system and that the western cluster sector is in approximate hydrostatic equilibrium before subcluster accretion, we infer a merger scenario between two subunits of mass ratio 1:4, leading to a present total system mass of M500 1.9×1015M\propto 1.9 \times 1015 M_{\odot}. The exceptional properties of A2163 present various similarities with those of 1E0657-56, the so-called 'bullet-cluster'.     The First VLT FORS1 spectra of Lyman-break candidates in the HDF-S and AXAF Deep Field

    We report on low-resolution multi-object spectroscopy of 30 faint targets (R \~ 24-25) in the HDF-S and AXAF deep field obtained with the VLT Focal Reducer/low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS1). Eight high-redshift galaxies with 2.75< z < 4 have been identified. The spectroscopic redshifts are in good agreement with the photometric ones with a dispersion σz=0.07\sigma_z = 0.07 at z<2 and σz=0.16\sigma_z = 0.16 at z>2. The inferred star formation rates of the individual objects are moderate, ranging from a few to a few tens solar masses per year. Five out of the eight high-z objects do not show prominent emission lines. One object has a spectrum typical of an AGN. In the AXAF field two relatively close pairs of galaxies have been identified, with separations of 8.7 and 3.1 proper Mpc and mean redshifts of 3.11 and 3.93, respectively.Comment: 5 pages Latex, with 2 PostScript figures.     ESO Imaging Survey VII. Distant Cluster Candidates over 12 square degrees

    In this paper the list of candidate clusters identified from the I-band data of the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) is completed using the images obtained over a total area of about 12 square degrees. Together with the data reported earlier the total I-band coverage of EIS is 17 square degrees, which has yielded a sample of 252 cluster candidates in the redshift range 0.2 \lsim z \lsim 1.3. This is the largest optically-selected sample currently available in the Southern Hemisphere.
