    Consumer Appraisals of Mobile Marketing Communications

    This paper reports on a study that investigates the emotions elicited from appraising SMS-based mobile marketing (m-marketing) communications under three marketing conditions: product consistency, incentives and permission giving. Results from the experimental design show that appraising m-marketing communications elicits both single emotions and mixed emotions; that is, a mixture of positive and negative emotions in the same response. Additionally, the results show that the influence of specific marketing conditions may increase or reduce the intensity of the emotions elicited. This study contributes to marketing practice by examining consumer appraisals of m-marketing communications under different combinations of marketing conditions. The results provide insights into which emotions are likely to be elicited as a result, and how a specific marketing condition might influence their levels of intensity.     Damping of a nanomechanical oscillator strongly coupled to a quantum dot

    We present theoretical and experimental results on the mechanical damping of an atomic force microscope cantilever strongly coupled to a self-assembled InAs quantum dot. When the cantilever oscillation amplitude is large, its motion dominates the charge dynamics of the dot which in turn leads to nonlinear, amplitude-dependent damping of the cantilever. We observe highly asymmetric lineshapes of Coulomb blockade peaks in the damping that reflect the degeneracy of energy levels on the dot, in excellent agreement with our strong coupling theory. Furthermore, we predict that excited state spectroscopy is possible by studying the damping versus oscillation amplitude, in analogy to varying the amplitude of an ac gate voltage.Comment: 4+ pages, 4 figure

    Interferon and Granulopoiesis Signatures in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Blood

    Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a prototype systemic autoimmune disease characterized by flares of high morbidity. Using oligonucleotide microarrays, we now show that active SLE can be distinguished by a remarkably homogeneous gene expression pattern with overexpression of granulopoiesis-related and interferon (IFN)-induced genes. Using the most stringent statistical analysis (Bonferroni correction), 15 genes were found highly up-regulated in SLE patients, 14 of which are targets of IFN and one, defensin DEFA-3, a major product of immature granulocytes. A more liberal correction (Benjamini and Hochberg correction) yielded 18 additional genes, 12 of which are IFN-regulated and 4 granulocyte-specific. Indeed immature neutrophils were identified in a large fraction of SLE patients white blood cells. High dose glucocorticoids, a standard treatment of disease flares, shuts down the interferon signature, further supporting the role of this cytokine in SLE. The expression of 10 genes correlated with disease activity according to the SLEDAI. The most striking correlation (P < 0.001, r = 0.55) was found with the formyl peptide receptor-like 1 protein that mediates chemotactic activities of defensins. Therefore, while the IFN signature confirms the central role of this cytokine in SLE, microarray analysis of blood cells reveals that immature granulocytes may be involved in SLE pathogenesis

    Best Evidence Science Teaching: research evidence in action

    ‘Best Evidence Science Teaching’ (BEST) is a collection of open-access, research- evidence-informed resources for science teaching at 11–14. BEST includes progression toolkits comprising sequenced learning steps, diagnostic questions and response activities. Case studies illustrate how teachers are using BEST resources. Observations and interview data from 12 teachers suggest that BEST allowed these teachers to develop their practice in the following key areas identified by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) Improving Secondary Science guidance report: preconceptions, memory, metacognitive talk, feedback, practical work and language of science. Findings suggest that research-evidence summaries were being used by teachers to inform how they describe and explain scientific concepts, listen to student responses, sequence teaching and select models and analogies. As such, they provided access to no-cost, subject-specific professional development ‘just in time’ for teaching

    Close encounters between young people and human spaceflight

    Over the past decade, public policy initiatives have promoted public engagement with science, incentivized in part by the increased role of engagement in securing research funding. Many routes to engagement rely on schools and young people. Since the Apollo missions, human spaceflight has been advocated as a means of promoting such engagement. This paper presents a case study of how young people were engaged with human spaceflight during the Principia mission. Principia launched Britain’s first government-funded astronaut to the International Space Station and had education and inspiring young people as a core objective. Drawing on actor-network-theory we trace the ways in which young people encountered human spaceflight through a qualitative empirical case study involving 113 children and 66 key informants including teachers, scientists, outreach providers and others involved in human spaceflight. Our findings have implications for policymakers and practitioners. We suggest a need for greater clarity over the role of live science in mediating science communication messages. If they are to succeed, science policy and outreach goals need to be aligned with existing school priorities. This can be achieved by paying attention to school planning cycles and making use of the affordances of social media for direct communication to teachers and young people

    Practical, open-ended and extended investigative projects in science

    The purpose of this study is to report on teachers’ use of open-ended investigative work post-16. The Gatsby Good Practical science report identifies opportunities to carry out open-ended work as one of their ten benchmarks for good practical science, yet there is currently no requirement for students in England to have access to the opportunity to carry out such work, which means that such work is often pushed to the margins. This study aimed to find out why and how teachers use open- ended investigative work with students in order to identify ways in which it can be possible in schools in England. Short questionnaires and extended semi-structured interviews were used to collect data. A total of seventeen teachers responded to the questionnaire and twelve teachers were interviewed. All teachers interviewed had been teaching for longer than 5 years and worked in schools or colleges rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. Teachers were asked about enablers and barriers to the work, and the ways in which they negotiated these. Findings are presented as case studies in order to be relatable to other teachers. The case studies provide information about the project, who participates, intended and perceived learning outcomes, the role of the teacher, school support and advice for other teachers. Open-ended investigative projects were characterised according to their degree of open-ness, i.e. what was provided to students from the following dimensions: problem and background, procedures, design or methodology, analysis and conclusions. Projects in which teachers provided all dimensions (confirmatory projects) were excluded from the report. Most teachers in the sample provided the theoretical context, with students able to make decisions about research design, analysis and conclusions. Ongoing or ad-hoc support was a feature of many projects, and whilst most projects were not assessed, they were often used to meet the Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC) or made to ‘count’ in other ways. Most projects were carried out during class time, sometimes including collapsed days in the summer term. Five big themes were identified in terms of what teachers wanted students to learn: ‘real’ science, the state of the field, research design, iteration and data handling. Enablers of open-ended investigative work in the curriculum include teacher experience and autonomy, technical support, support from senior leadership, laboratory space and equipment budget, examination specifications, and external support and recognition. Challenges in providing access for students to open-ended investigative projects include access to literature, laboratory space, expertise and equipment, numbers of students and technicians in relation to number of teachers. Teachers in the sample found ways to negotiate or to overcome these barriers, which are likely to be useful to teachers considering offering open-ended project work in the curriculum. Time remains an intractable issue for all teachers in the sample. This report includes data only from teachers who were dedicated to providing open-ended investigative projects to their students; there may be additional barriers to doing this that affect the wider science teacher population. All of the teachers are based in schools or colleges rated outstanding or good by Ofsted, and many teach within their specialism. The conditions in other institutions may contribute to barriers to open-ended investigative projects and care must be taken to avoid widening educational inequalities in terms of access to open-ended investigative projects. Whilst open-ended investigative projects can be integrated into the post-16 curriculum, where this is not a requirement of the specification, it tends to rely on work beyond timetabled hours from teachers. Several teachers in this sample found ways of making project work ‘count’, for example by relating it to the CPAC, linking to award schemes, offering as an alternative to other scheduled teaching and learning activities and encouraging students to write about their experiences on UCAS applications. Some teachers in this study believed that open-ended investigative work had a positive impact on attainment post-16, and there may be value in researching this claim because if evidence did support the claim, more teachers may be convinced to introduce project work, even if not required by specifications. To increase the uptake of open-ended investigative project work at post-16, we recommend a range of actions. Exemplars of ‘making open-ended investigative projects count,’ could be made available to teachers, with attention to ways of minimising risk (particularly in chemistry projects), and teacher and technician time for project work through workload models and buy-out could be valued. Research investigating claims about the impact of open-ended investigative work on attainment would build a more convincing case to teachers who are currently reluctant to introduce open- ended project work. Assessment is an important driver for classroom practice, and a way to ensure that this happens is to change policy to require open-ended investigative work in post-16 examination specifications. However, where open-ended investigative work is to be included in specifications, care must be taken to avoid assessment methods that result in a formulaic approach to investigative project work

    Practical Independent Research Projects in science : a synthesis and evaluation of the evidence of impact on high school students

    Practical independent research projects (IRPs) are a feature of school science in a number of countries. To assess the impact of IRPs on students, a systematic review of the literature was undertaken. Thirty-nine papers met the review inclusion criteria, reporting on work from twelve countries. The review indicates that IRPs are often associated with wider initiatives such as authentic science, problem-based learning, and project-based learning. There is considerable variability in the nature of IRP work in relation to focus, models of provision, assessment, the involvement of external partners such as universities and employers, and funding, and this diversity affects judgements on the quality of the evidence base on impact. The majority of the research reviewed explored areas such as conceptual understanding, motivation to study science once it is no longer compulsory and attitudes to science, and the development of practical skills. Benefits were identified in relation to the learning of science ideas, affective responses to science, views of pursuing careers involving science, and development of a range of skills. Studies focusing on traditionally under-represented groups indicated that such students felt more positive about science as a result of undertaking IRPs. The review findings indicate that further work is needed to enhance the quality of the available evidence, to consider the ways in which IRPs can be validly assessed, to explore more fully the potential benefits for traditionally under-represented groups, and to explore more fully the potential longer-term benefits of participation in IRPs at high school level

    This article describes the results of a study into students’ experiences of independent research project work in science. Independent research projects (IRPs) are projects in which students are supervised (usually by a teacher, scientist or both) to work independently on a scientific problem or question over an extended period.
