    Performance of carrot and onion seed primed with beneficial microorganisms in glasshouse and field trials

    Beneficial microorganisms (Clonostachys rosea IK726, Pseudomonas chlororaphis MA342, Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0, Trichoderma harzianum T22 and Trichoderma viride S17a) were successfully applied to carrot and onion seed during a commercial drum priming process. Applied microorganisms were recovered above the target of at least 1 × 105 cfu g−1 seed following subsequent application of pesticides to the seed according to standard commercial practices of film-coating carrot and pelletting onion seed. Two glasshouse experiments consistently showed that priming improved emergence of carrot seed and that C. rosea IK726 further improved emergence time. Priming improved emergence of onion seed in one glasshouse experiment, but had an unexpected negative effect on emergence in the second experiment, possibly due to the proliferation of an unidentified indigenous microorganism during priming, becoming deleterious in high numbers. In this experiment, the application of beneficial microorganisms during priming negated this effect and significantly improved emergence. For each crop, a series of field trials was also carried out over three years, at two different sites each year. Although some positive effects of different seed treatments were seen on emergence or yield in individual field trials, no consistent effects were found for primed or microorganism-treated seed across all sites and years. However, a combined analysis of data for all years and sites indicated that pesticide application did consistently improve emergence and yield for both carrot and onion.     Evolution of entanglement within classical light states

    We investigate the evolution of quantum correlations over the lifetime of a multi-photon state. Measurements reveal time-dependent oscillations of the entanglement fidelity for photon pairs created by a single semiconductor quantum dot. The oscillations are attributed to the phase acquired in the intermediate, non-degenerate, exciton-photon state and are consistent with simulations. We conclude that emission of photon pairs by a typical quantum dot with finite polarisation splitting is in fact entangled in a time-evolving state, and not classically correlated as previously regarded

    A Second Method to Photometrically Align Multi-Site Microlensing Light Curves: Source Color in Planetary Event MOA-2007-BLG-192

    At present, microlensing light curves from different telescopes and filters are photometrically aligned by fitting them to a common model. We present a second method based on photometry of common field stars. If two spectral responses are similar (or the color of the source is known) then this technique can resolve important ambiguities that frequently arise when predicting the future course of the event, and that occasionally persist even when the event is over. Or if the spectral responses are different, it can be used to derive the color of the source when that is unknown. We present the essential elements of this technique and apply it to the case of MOA-2007-BLG-192, an important planetary event for which the system may be a terrestrial planet orbiting a brown dwarf or very low mass star. The refined estimate of the source color that we derive here, V-I=2.36 +- 0.03, will aid in making the estimate of the lens mass more precise.Comment: 16 pages including 3 figures. Submitted to Ap

    Microlens Parallaxes with SIRTF

    The Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) will drift away from the Earth at about 0.1 AU/yr. Microlensing events will therefore have different characteristics as seen from the satellite and the Earth. From the difference, it is possible in principle to measure v-tilde, the transverse velocity of the lens projected onto the observer plane. Since v-tilde has very different values for different populations (disk, halo, Large Magellanic Cloud), such measurements could help identify the location, and hence the nature, of the lenses. I show that the method previously developed by Gould for measuring such satellite parallaxes fails completely in the case of SIRTF: it is overwhelmed by degeneracies which arise from fact that the Earth and satellite observations are in different band passes. I develop a new method which allows for observations in different band passes and yet removes all degeneracies. The method combines a purely ground-based measurement of the "parallax asymmetry" with a measurement of the delay between the time the event peaks at the Earth and satellite. In effect, the parallax asymmetry determines the component of v-tilde in the Earth-Sun direction, while the delay time measures the component of v-tilde in the direction of the Earth's orbit.Comment: 21 pages plus 3 figure

    The GoodNight study—online CBT for insomnia for the indicated prevention of depression: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

    BACKGROUND Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) delivered through the Internet is effective as a treatment in reducing insomnia in individuals seeking help for insomnia. CBT-I also lowers levels of depression in this group. However, it is not known if targeting insomnia using CBT-I will lower depressive symptoms, and thus reduce the risk of major depressive episode onset, in those specifically at risk for depression. Therefore, this study aims to examine whether Internet delivery of fully automated self-help CBT-I designed to reduce insomnia will prevent depression. METHOD/DESIGN A sample of 1,600 community-dwelling adults (aged 18-64), who screen positive for both subclinical levels of depressive symptoms and insomnia, will be recruited via various media and randomised to either a 9-week online insomnia treatment programme, Sleep Healthy Using The internet (SHUTi), or an online attention-matched control group (HealthWatch). The primary outcome variable will be depression symptom levels at the 6-month post-intervention on the Patient Heath Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). A secondary outcome will be onset of major depressive episodes assessed at the 6-month post-intervention using 'current' and 'time from intervention' criteria from the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. DISCUSSION This trial is the first randomised controlled trial of an Internet-based insomnia intervention as an indicated preventative programme for depression. If effective, online provision of a depression prevention programme will facilitate dissemination.     Identification of the OGLE-2003-BLG-235/MOA-2003-BLG-53 Planetary Host Star

    We present the results of HST observations of the host star for the first definitive extrasolar planet detected by microlensing. The light curve model for this event predicts that the lens star should be separated from the source star by ~6mas at the time of the HST images. If the lens star is a late G, K or early M dwarf, then it will be visible in the HST images as an additional source of light that is blended with the source image. Unless the lens and source have exactly the same colors, its presence will also be revealed by a systematic shift between centroids of the source plus lens in different filter bands. The HST data indicates both of these effects: the HST source that matches the position of the source star is 0.21 magnitudes brighter in the ACS/HRC-F814W filter than the microlensing model predicts, and there is an offset of ~0.7mas between the centroid of this source in the F814W and F435W filter bands. We conclude the planetary host star has been detected in these HST images, and this identification of the lens star enables a complete solution of the lens system. The lens parameters are determined with a Bayesian analysis, averaging over uncertainties in the measured parameters, interstellar extinction, and allowing for the possibility of a binary companion to the source star. This yields a stellar mass of M_* = 0.63(+0.07/-0.09) M_solar and a planet mass of M_p = 2.6 (+0.8/-0.6) M_Jup at an orbital separation of 4.3 (+2.5/-0.8) AU. Thus, the lens system resembles our own Solar System, with a planet of ~3 Jupiter-masses in a Jupiter-like orbit around a star of two-thirds of a Solar mass. These conclusions can be tested with future HST images, which should reveal a broadening of the blended source-plus-lens point spread function due to the relative lens-source proper motion.Comment: 11 pages, with 3 figures. to appear in ApJ Lett (Aug 20 issue
