    Wilderness in Ruskin Bond’s Dust on the Mountains

    Throughout reading short stories one realizes how the most fundamental stories of Indian culture also narrate tales of human existence. The Pañcatantra fables written in Sanskrit have also originated in India addressed to children that have stories that have been tailored distinctively to the evident needs of the child. Most of these stories are immersed in the Indian culture in which children grow up. Interestingly, Ruskin Bond as a story writer focuses on the epistemological foundation of the stories while incorporating fiction and personal experiences and, at the same time, with ecological concerns. His stories then become an assortment of experiences and anecdotes to understand the postulate in the story of humanity and the wilderness. This research paper is a study of Bond’s Dust on the Mountains that examines the stories as an expression of the narratives of civilization and wilderness. The aim of this paper is not only to read the book of stories that bridge different interdisciplinary subjects defining and describing wilderness but also to explore how the narrative speaks to readers with a wide range of backgrounds and interests. The study incorporates an ecocritical perspective to examine the metanarrative that frames both author’s and readers’ imagination, perception, and way of life

    Gravitational waves and electroweak baryogenesis in a global study of the extended scalar singlet model

    We perform a global fit of the extended scalar singlet model with a fermionic dark matter (DM) candidate. Using the most up-to-date results from the Planck\mathit{Planck} measured DM relic density, direct detection limits from the XENON1T (2018) experiment, electroweak precision observables and Higgs searches at colliders, we constrain the 7-dimensional model parameter space. We also find regions in the model parameter space where a successful electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG) can be viable. This allows us to compute the gravitational wave (GW) signals arising from the phase transition, and discuss the potential discovery prospects of the model at current and future GW experiments. Our global fit places a strong upper and\mathit{and} lower limit on the second scalar mass, the fermion DM mass and the scalar-fermion DM coupling. In agreement with previous studies, we find that our model can simultaneously yield a strong first-order phase transition and saturate the observed DM abundance. More importantly, the GW spectra of viable points can often be within reach of future GW experiments such as LISA, DECIGO and BBO.Comment: 42 pages, 10 figures and 2 tables; v2: updated references, submitted to JHEP; v3: corrected typos and updated references, matches version published in JHE

    AbstractUveal tract melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignancy in adults, accounting for about 5–10% of all the melanomas. Since there are no lymphatic vessels in the eye, uveal melanoma can only spread hematogenously leading to liver metastasis. A wide variety of treatment modalities are available for its management, leading to dilemma in selecting the appropriate therapy. This article reviews the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities available and thus, can help to individualize the treatment plan for each patient

    Study of Multidrug Resistance Pattern among Escherichia coli isolated from patients with Urinary tract infection

    Objective: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are some of the most common bacterial infections encountered in community and cause of significant morbidity and high medical cost. Escherichia coli is the most common pathogen belongs to Enterobacteriaceae family responsible for majority of UTI infections. Antimicrobial drugs have been routinely prescribed for empirical treatment of UTIs which has led to a dramatic increase in antibiotic resistance pattern of E. coli. The aim of present study was to analyse the multidrug resistance patterns (MDR) of E. coli isolated from UTI patients.Methods: A total of 80 urine samples collected from the patients suspected of having UTI attending Maharishi Markandeshwar Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (MMIMSR), Mullana, Ambala were cultured using standard microbiological techniques. Antibiotic susceptibility testing of E.coli was done by using minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). MIC of tetracycline, doxycycline, azithromycin, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, ampicillin, amoxicillin and amikacin was done by agar dilution method.Results: Of the total 46 isolates contributing 33 females and 13 males were confirmed as E. coli. About 51.34% of the female patients belonged to the age group 21-40 yr and 53.84% of the male population belonged to 41-80 yr were found to be more susceptible to UTI infection. All isolates confirmed as E.coli were found to be multidrug resistant. 80% of the isolates exhibited MICs higher than 1000mg/L against β-lactams. 20% of the E. coli isolates exhibited MICs higher than 1000mg/L against ciprofloxacin, amikacin and erythromycin. 23% and 95% of E. coli isolates exhibited MICs less than 128 mg/L against doxycycline and levofloxacin respectively.Conclusion: The present study revealed the decreased susceptibility of the E.coli to all drugs. E. coli resistance profile to beta lactams, quinolones, macrolides, tetracyclines and aminoglycosides were also found to be quite high in this study emphasizing the need to educate public about appropriate use of antibiotics.N

    Synergistically Active and Safe Fixed Dose Combination of Meropenem and Sulbactam

    Meropenem is a third generation broad spectrum antibiotic. Emergence of meropenem resistance has been reported due to development of mutant plasmid mediated metallo-β-lactamases (IMP-6) and AmpC β–lactamases. Sulbactam, a stable β-lactamase inhibitor, increase antimicrobial activity of meropenem by inhibiting the enzyme β-lactamase. Fixed dose combination of Meropenem-sulbactam in the proportion of 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 2:1 and 3:1 were evaluated for the antimicrobial activity. Combination of meropenem and sulbactam in the ratio of 2:1 exhibited the synergistic activity. This combination was checked for the subchronic toxicity on wistar rats and no change in biochemical and physiological parameters was observed

    SYNTHESIS OF SOME NOVEL 3,5,6-TRISUBSTITUTED-[1,2,4]TRIAZOLO[3,4-c][1,2,4] TRIAZINESAS DNA PHOTOCLEAVING AGENTS

    Objective: To develop an easy and non toxic method for synthesis of some novel triazolotriazines via oxidative transformation of triazinylhydrazones using iodobenzene diacetate and to evaluate their DNA photocleavage potential. Methods: A series nineteen triazin-3-yl moiety linked hydrazones of various aryl and heteroaryl aldehydes has been prepared which on treatment with iodobenzene diacetate in dichloromethane gave novel triazolo[3,4-c]triazine derivatives under mild reaction conditions. DNA photocleavage activity of all these compounds was performed using agarose gel electrophoresis. Results: Synthesis of some novel triazolotriazines has been successively achieved and structures of compounds were established on the basis of FT-IR, 1H, 13C NMR and mass spectral data. Most of the compounds such as 4m-n, 4p-s, as well as 3b, 3d, 3e, 3h, 3p and 3q exhibited admirable DNA photocleavage potential. Conclusion: The employed approach to afford triazolo[3,4-c]triazines only because the Dimorth rearrangement occurred under catalytic amount of base and acid etc. The results indicated that both triazolotriazines and triazinylhydrazones exhibited promising DNA photocleavage activity. Moreover, compounds containing phenyl ring with electron-releasing substituent attached to pyrazole nucleus possessed increased DNA photocleavage potential
