    Happiness and development : the effect of mental well-being on economic growth

    This paper examines the impact of overall happiness of citizens on economic growth across countries. We first document a robust positive correlation between overall happiness level and economic growth across countries, and then exploit the variation in sex imbalance, a factor that impedes normal mating and thus causes unhappiness, to instrument happiness and identify its causal impact on economic growth. Our results show that happiness has a positive causal effect on economic growth. Other things being equal, a one-standard-deviation increase in happiness raises growth rate by approximately two percentage points. In addition, we find that life expectancy and investment ratio are two possible channels through which happiness works

    Decoding the spectra of SDSS early-type galaxies: New indicators of age and recent star formation

    (Abridged) We apply Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to a sample of early-type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in order to infer differences in their star formation histories. Out of the first few principal components (PC), we study four which give information about stellar populations and velocity dispersion. We construct two parameters (eta and zeta) as linear combinations of PC1 and PC2. We find zeta to be most sensitive to recent episodes of star formation, and eta to be strongly dependent on the average age of the stellar populations. The distribution of the eta component of the composites appear to be indistinguishable between high and low density regions, whereas the distribution of zeta parameters have a significant skew towards lower values for galaxies in low density regions. This result suggests that galaxies in lower density environments are less likely to present weak episodes of recent star formation. In contrast, a significant number of galaxies from our high density subsample -- which includes clusters (both outer regions and centres) and groups -- underwent small but detectable recent star formation at high metallicity, in agreement with recent estimates targeting elliptical galaxies in Hickson Compact Groups and in the field (Ferreras et al.).Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures.     Planar #CSP Equality Corresponds to Quantum Isomorphism -- A Holant Viewpoint

    Recently, Man\v{c}inska and Roberson proved that two graphs GG and G′G' are quantum isomorphic if and only if they admit the same number of homomorphisms from all planar graphs. We extend this result to planar #CSP with any pair of sets F\mathcal{F} and F′\mathcal{F}' of real-valued, arbitrary-arity constraint functions. Graph homomorphism is the special case where each of F\mathcal{F} and F′\mathcal{F}' contains a single symmetric 0-1-valued binary constraint function. Our treatment uses the framework of planar Holant problems. To prove that quantum isomorphic constraint function sets give the same value on any planar #CSP instance, we apply a novel form of holographic transformation of Valiant, using the quantum permutation matrix U\mathcal{U} defining the quantum isomorphism. Due to the noncommutativity of U\mathcal{U}'s entries, it turns out that this form of holographic transformation is only applicable to planar Holant. To prove the converse, we introduce the quantum automorphism group Qut(F)(\mathcal{F}) of a set of constraint functions F\mathcal{F}, and characterize the intertwiners of Qut(F)(\mathcal{F}) as the signature matrices of planar Holant(F ∣ EQ)(\mathcal{F}\,|\,\mathcal{EQ}) quantum gadgets. Then we define a new notion of (projective) connectivity for constraint functions and reduce arity while preserving the quantum automorphism group. Finally, to address the challenges posed by generalizing from 0-1 valued to real-valued constraint functions, we adapt a technique of Lov\'asz in the classical setting for isomorphisms of real-weighted graphs to the setting of quantum isomorphisms.Comment: 37 pages, 11 figure

    Managing enterprises and ERP systems:a contingency model for the enterprization of operations

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems development and emerging practices in the management of enterprises (i.e. parts of companies working with parts of other companies to deliver a complex product and/or service) and identify any apparent correlations. Suitable a priori contingency frameworks are then used and extended to explain apparent correlations. Discussion is given to provide guidance for researchers and practitioners to deliver better strategic, structural and operational competitive advantage through this approach; coined here as the "enterprization of operations". Design/methodology/approach: Theoretical induction uses a new empirical longitudinal case study from Zoomlion (a Chinese manufacturing company) built using an adapted form of template analysis to produce a new contingency framework. Findings: Three main types of enterprises and the three main types of ERP systems are defined and correlations between them are explained. Two relevant a priori frameworks are used to induct a new contingency model to support the enterprization of operations; known as the dynamic enterprise reference grid for ERP (DERG-ERP). Research limitations/implications: The findings are based on one longitudinal case study. Further case studies are currently being conducted in the UK and China. Practical implications: The new contingency model, the DERG-ERP, serves as a guide for ERP vendors, information systems management and operations managers hoping to grow and sustain their competitive advantage with respect to effective enterprise strategy, enterprise structure and ERP systems.
