A Hot Helium Plasma in the Galactic Center Region
Recent X-ray observations by the space mission Chandra confirmed the
astonishing evidence for a diffuse, hot, thermal plasma at a temperature of 9.
K (8 keV) found by previous surveys to extend over a few hundred parsecs
in the Galactic Centre region. This plasma coexists with the usual components
of the interstellar medium such as cold molecular clouds and a soft (~0.8 keV)
component produced by supernova remnants, and its origin remains uncertain.
First, simple calculations using a mean sound speed for a hydrogen-dominated
plasma have suggested that it should not be gravitationally bound, and thus
requires a huge energy source to heat it in less than the escape time. Second,
an astrophysical mechanism must be found to generate such a high temperature.
No known source has been identified to fulfill both requirements. Here we
address the energetics problem and show that the hot component could actually
be a gravitationally confined helium plasma. We illustrate the new prospects
this opens by discussing the origin of this gas, and by suggesting possible

European Population Substructure: Clustering of Northern and Southern Populations
Using a genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panel, we observed population structure in a diverse group of Europeans and European Americans. Under a variety of conditions and tests, there is a consistent and reproducible distinction between ânorthernâ and âsouthernâ European population groups: most individual participants with southern European ancestry (Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Greek) have >85% membership in the âsouthernâ population; and most northern, western, eastern, and central Europeans have >90% in the ânorthernâ population group. Ashkenazi Jewish as well as Sephardic Jewish origin also showed >85% membership in the âsouthernâ population, consistent with a later Mediterranean origin of these ethnic groups. Based on this work, we have developed a core set of informative SNP markers that can control for this partition in European population structure in a variety of clinical and genetic studies
The AMS-02 RICH Imager Prototype - In-Beam Tests with 20 GeV/c per Nucleon Ions -
A prototype of the AMS Cherenkov imager (RICH) has been tested at CERN by
means of a low intensity 20 GeV/c per nucleon ion beam obtained by
fragmentation of a primary beam of Pb ions. Data have been collected with a
single beam setting, over the range of nuclear charges 2<Z<~45 in various beam
conditions and using different radiators. The charge Z and velocity beta

Chromatin: a tunable spring at work inside chromosomes
This paper focuses on mechanical aspects of chromatin biological functioning.
Within a basic geometric modeling of the chromatin assembly, we give for the
first time the complete set of elastic constants (twist and bend persistence
lengths, stretch modulus and twist-stretch coupling constant) of the so-called
30-nm chromatin fiber, in terms of DNA elastic properties and geometric
properties of the fiber assembly. The computation naturally embeds the fiber
within a current analytical model known as the ``extensible worm-like rope'',
allowing a straightforward prediction of the force-extension curves. We show
that these elastic constants are strongly sensitive to the linker length, up to
1 bp, or equivalently to its twist, and might locally reach very low values,
yielding a highly flexible and extensible domain in the fiber. In particular,
the twist-stretch coupling constant, reflecting the chirality of the chromatin
fiber, exhibits steep variations and sign changes when the linker length is
varied.
We argue that this tunable elasticity might be a key feature for chromatin
function, for instance in the initiation and regulation of transcription.Comment: 38 pages 15 figure
Management of difficult airway in intratracheal tumor surgery
BACKGROUND: Tracheal malignancies are usual victim of delay in diagnosis by virtue of their symptoms resembling asthma. Sometimes delayed diagnosis may lead to almost total airway obstruction. For difficult airways, not leaving any possibility of manipulation into neck region or endoscopic intervention, femorofemoral cardiopulmonary bypass can be a promising approach. CASE PRESENTATION: We are presenting a case of tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma (cylindroma) occupying about 90% of the tracheal lumen. It was successfully managed by surgical excision of mass by sternotomy and tracheotomy under femorofemoral cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). CONCLUSION: Any patient with recurrent respiratory symptoms should be evaluated by radiological and endoscopic means earlier to avoid delay in diagnosis of such conditions. Femorofemoral cardiopulmonary bypass is a relatively safe way of managing certain airway obstructions
The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector (RICH) of the AMS experiment
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) experiment to be installed on the
International Space Station (ISS) will be equipped with a proximity focusing
Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector for measuring the electric charge and
velocity of the charged cosmic particles. A RICH prototype consisting of 96
photomultiplier units, including a piece of the conical reflector, was built
and its performance evaluated with ion beam data. Preliminary results of the
in-beam tests performed with ion fragments resulting from collisions of a 158
GeV/c/nuc primary beam of Indium ions (CERN SPS) on a Pb target are reported.
The collected data included tests to the final front-end electronics and to
different aerogel radiators. Cherenkov rings for a large range of charged
nuclei and with reflected photons were observed. The data analysis confirms the
design goals. Charge separation up to Fe and velocity resolution of the order

âSavages Who Speak Frenchâ: Folklore, Primitivism and Morals in Robert Hertz
Hertz's analysis of the Alpine cult of Saint Besse apparently marks a break from his studies of death, sin and the left to folkloric studies. This analysis helps one to understand the personality of Robert Hertz. His sociological curiosity about folklore reveals his ambiguous position in social sciences at the beginning of the twentieth century. His text appears to be a variation from the Durkheimian norm, but another reading could suggest that Hertz continued and went beyond Durkheimian thought to something between sociology of the modern world and engaged socialism. Through this study, Hertz linked his political ideals, his work in ethnology and his desire for social involvement. The cult of Saint Besse perpetuated as much religious tradition as local identity. The Alpine people were presented in the text as wilful perpetuators of an ideal social order, whose loss for his contemporary city dwellers Hertz feared. The alpine Other, marked by a material and moral backwardness, represented for activist and socialist Hertz one of the paths of balanced social organization that stabilized the identity of a group across time if it fit rather well into the folkloric stereotypes of the beginning of the twentieth century. Finally, by linking events in Herz's life (e.g., the accidental Alpine death of his father), this article suggests that the legend of Saint Besse embodied several recurring motifs in Hertz' career: the accidental deaths of saint and father by falls, the military role of the saint and of Hertz himself

Multiparticle azimuthal correlations for extracting event-by-event elliptic and triangular flow in Au + Au collisions at sNN =200 GeV
We present measurements of elliptic and triangular azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles detected at forward rapidity 1<|η|<3 in Au + Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV, as a function of centrality. The multiparticle cumulant technique is used to obtain the elliptic flow coefficients v2{2},v2{4},v2{6}, and v2{8}, and triangular flow coefficients v3{2} and v3{4}. Using the small-variance limit, we estimate the mean and variance of the event-by-event v2 distribution from v2{2} and v2{4}. In a complementary analysis, we also use a folding procedure to study the distributions of v2 and v3 directly, extracting both the mean and variance. Implications for initial geometrical fluctuations and their translation into the final-state momentum distributions are discussed
