Double and single pion photoproduction within a dynamical coupled-channels model
Within a dynamical coupled-channels model which has already been fixed from
analyzing the data of the pi N -> pi N and gamma N -> pi N reactions, we
present the predicted double pion photoproduction cross sections up to the
second resonance region, W< 1.7 GeV. The roles played by the different
mechanisms within our model in determining both the single and double pion
photoproduction reactions are analyzed, focusing on the effects due to the
direct gamma N -> pi pi N mechanism, the interplay between the resonant and
non-resonant amplitudes, and the coupled-channels effects. The model parameters
which can be determined most effectively in the combined studies of both the
single and double pion photoproduction data are identified for future studies.Comment: Version to appear in PRC. 16 pages, 13 figure
What kind of intimacy is meaningful to you? How intimate interactions foster individuals' sensemaking of innovation
This study examines how intimacy affects individuals' sensemaking of innovation in their organization. Although sensemaking facilitates understanding innovation and envisioning new worldviews, it involves a delicate process of self-disclosure, reflection, personal contact and communication. Intimacy focuses on time-bounded interactions that foster individuals' progressive self-disclosure and perceptions of mutual understanding. Therefore, drawing on intimacy theories, we investigate from a microlevel perspective how temporally bounded intimate interactions foster the meaningfulness of innovation for individuals. As sensemaking processes differ in large-scale radical and incremental innovations, we examine both contexts in a post hoc analysis. Through a field study, we show that different intimacy dynamics (emotional, cognitive and listening) influence meaningfulness perceptions. In particular, we find that the emotional intimacy dynamics positively influence meaningfulness perceptions in the context of radical innovation initiatives, while the cognitive and listening intimacy dynamics positively influence meaningfulness perceptions in the context of incremental innovation initiatives. This study contributes to the sensemaking innovation literature by introducing intimacy as an enabler of sensemaking. Our study also suggests that managers should encourage moments of intimate interaction when pursuing innovation to facilitate sensemaking of change

Multivariate side-band subtraction using probabilistic event weights
A common situation in experimental physics is to have a signal which can not
be separated from a non-interfering background through the use of any cut. In
this paper, we describe a procedure for determining, on an event-by-event
basis, a quality factor (-factor) that a given event originated from the
signal distribution. This procedure generalizes the "side-band" subtraction
method to higher dimensions without requiring the data to be divided into bins.
The -factors can then be used as event weights in subsequent analysis
procedures, allowing one to more directly access the true spectrum of the

A fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometric method to quantitate lysophosphatidylserine in rat brain.
A method to quantitate lysophosphatidylserine by fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometry using 1-hexa-decanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-L-serine as internal standard is described. The standard curve is linear with a correlation coefficient r2 = 0.999 from 10 to 1000 ng. This curve has been used to quantitate LPS in rat brain using phosphorus assay as a test control. We found 475 +/- 70 ng of LPS in 1 mg of tissue (n = 3). This method presents advantages due to its sensitivity and its capability to give molecular information of the unmodified compound
The monitoring program of grapevine phytoplasmas in Tuscany (Italy): Results of a four year survey
Quantitative PCR protocols for phytoplasma detection were used to
monitor grapevine yellows (GY) in 373 vineyards located in nine Tuscan districts. Among more than 70,000 plants visually monitored, 1.867 plants were
sampled and “flavescence dorée” phytoplasmas (FD) were detected in 122
plants and mainly identified as trains belonging to 16SrV-C subgroup. The “bois
noir” (BN) phytoplasma was found in 734 samples, with prevalence of tufB
type-b strains. The 2013–2015 monitoring program was strongly influenced by
the first survey (2012) in which FD was found consistently in the North West
(15 samples), whereas only a few cases were observed in the East territory (2
samples). Both areas were thoroughly monitored in the following years: few
foci were found in the East (2 in 2014, 1 in 2015), while several infected areas
were found in the North West (6, 10 and 22 foci in 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively). Definitely, the novel FD foci detected in the survey (17, 6, 12 and 23 in
each year of survey) and the widespread of BN, suggest a dangerous distribution of GY in Tuscan
The "Clubs against Drugs" program in Stockholm, Sweden: two cross-sectional surveys examining drug use among staff at licensed premises
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The objective of this study is to examine self-reported drug use among staff at licensed premises, types of drugs used, attitudes towards drugs, and observed drug use among guests. Results are presented from two measurement points (in 2001 and 2007/08). This study was carried out within the framework of the "Clubs against Drugs" program, which is a community-based multi-component intervention targeting licensed premises in Stockholm, Sweden.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted, the first in 2001 and the second in 2007/08. Staff at licensed premises attending server training were asked to participate in the anonymous survey. A survey was administered in a classroom setting and consisted of four sections: 1) demographics, 2) respondents' own drug use experience, 3) respondents' attitudes towards drug use, and 4) observed drug use among guests at licensed premises.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Data were collected from 446 staff in 2001 and 677 staff in 2007/08. The four most commonly used drugs among staff were cannabis, cocaine, amphetamine, and ecstasy. The highest rates of drug use were reported by staff in the two youngest age groups, i.e., those younger than 25 and those between the ages of 25 and 29. In 2007/08 staff reported significantly lower rates of drug use than staff in 2001. Last year drug use for the sample in 2007/08 was 19% compared to 27% for the 2001 sample. While drug-using staff compared to non drug-using staff reported more observations of drug use among guests, they were less inclined to intervene. Overall, staff reported restrictive attitudes towards drugs.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The prevalence of life-time and last year drug use among staff at licensed premises is high compared to the general population in Sweden. Lower rates of self-reported drug use among staff were reported in 2007/08. The results of this study highlight that staff at licensed premises represent an important target population in club drug prevention programs.</p
Evaluation of work-based screening for early signs of alcohol-related liver disease in hazardous and harmful drinkers: the PrevAIL study
Background
The direct cost of excessive alcohol consumption to health services is substantial but dwarfed by the cost borne by the workplace as a result of lost productivity. The workplace is also a promising setting for health interventions. The Preventing Alcohol Harm in Liverpool and Knowsley (PrevAIL) project aimed to evaluate a mechanism for detecting the prevalence of alcohol related liver disease using fibrosis biomarkers. Secondary aims were to identify the additive effect of obesity as a risk factor for early liver disease; to assess other impacts of alcohol on work, using a cross-sectional survey.
Methods
Participants (aged 36-55y) from 13 workplaces participated (March 2011–April 2012). BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure and self-reported alcohol consumption in the previous week was recorded. Those consuming more than the accepted UK threshold (men: >21 units; female: >14 units alcohol) provided a 20 ml venous blood sample for a biomarker test (Southampton Traffic Light Test) and completed an alcohol questionnaire (incorporating the Severity of Alcohol Dependence Questionnaire).
Results
The screening mechanism enrolled 363 individuals (52 % women), 39 % of whom drank above the threshold and participated in the liver screen (n = 141, complete data = 124 persons). Workplaces with successful participation were those where employers actively promoted, encouraged and facilitated attendance. Biomarkers detected that 30 % had liver disease (25 %, intermediate; 5 % probable). Liver disease was associated with the frequency of visits to the family physician (P = 0.036) and obesity (P = 0.052).
Conclusions
The workplace is an important setting for addressing alcohol harm, but there are barriers to voluntary screening that need to be addressed. Early detection and support of cases in the community could avert deaths and save health and social costs. Alcohol and obesity should be addressed simultaneously, because of their known multiplicative effect on liver disease risk, and because employers preferred a general health intervention to one that focused solely on alcohol consumption
